Not to cause mass panic but I have to ask.... I don't mean to rouse people into a tizzy but I thought I'd inquire...
I've heard mumblings on my LJ friends list of malware (Specifically vundo) infecting people via LJ's ads. Is this really happening?
I have adblock so I think I'm good but still... |

Updates to LJ's privacy policy- brought to you by INKSOME Note: This post is actually written by Mysticshell on the journaling site Inksome (Formerly known as Scribblit.), under Friends lock. I asked if I could copy/paste it here and she gave me permission. ( Mysticshell rants ) |

The return of free* accounts! (*some restrictions on "free" may apply) I heard about this a couple of days ago, but didn't really feel up to the task of writing the report on it. Fortunately, some anonymouse on wank_report did most of the work for me: " Basic Account creation to be restored on LiveJournal! Except that it isn't. It's the usual SUP double-speak. What LJ are actually proposing is to impose ads on basic accounts. It's one of a range of revenue-raising options being aired for "discussion." An air of vague acceptance prevails as the options are examined. Then SUP's one functioning brain-cell, Marta, confirms, on questioning, that the ads will be applied not only to newly created Basics, but to the currently grandfathered existing accounts, too. The mood darkens as the realisation sinks in." So they're eliminating the completely ad-free option entirely. Your only choice now will be either Paid or a couple of levels of "sponsored". As a long-time freeloader Basic user, I'm not happy about this either; however, I'm pretty much resigned to it happening, no matter how many cat macros and threats of departure are posted in protest. And I'm running Firefox with Adblocker, so I won't see any change... Annoying to see the continuing bait-and-switch tactics, though. |

LJ Election Results Cross-posted from fandom_loungeNo big surprise that legomymalfoy won. There are some rumblings in the comments along with NSFW icons. http://community.livejournal.com/lj_election_en/25718.htmlIt seems that schmuckythecat is determined to be in on any comment that supports legomymalfoy or makes a disparaging remark against jameth. Could provide some entertain over the next few days to be sure. Post your thoughts on yaoi LJ and the election here. This time on LJ can do nuthin' no right: Here's how it works: Users will be offered paid accounts that are supported by sponsors. Users will be able to choose accounts from a range of brands supporting this program. Should the sponsor stop supporting this arrangement, the account will revert back to its previous type.
The accounts will have a specially designed journal style with modest branding from the sponsor; these will be designed by our creative department and approved by the sponsors. There will also be a banner in the profile page. The owners of paid/sponsored accounts will not see advertisements in other people's journals, while existing paid users will not see banners in a sponsored users' profiles. The branded styles will respect ?style=mine, which will allow paid users to avoid seeing branded styles if they wish to do so. ETA on request - post continues thusly: This new feature will soon be available for testing by Russian-speaking users. They will test the functionality of new accounts and provide us with feedback. Based on this feedback and agreements with global advertisers, we may eventually extend this new functionality to LJ users around the world. Popcorn - hot. Booze - cooled. Countdown to wank commencing now. 3... 2... 1... Current Mood: Navel-Gazing |

So it begins. The rumors were true. All public LJ posts now have a flag on the entry. When you click on it, you get this: Flag Content To report anything outside of these categories, please use the Abuse reporting system. What is nature of this content? Explicit Adult Content Offensive Content Hate Speech Illegal Activity Nude Images of Minors Return to Entry The choices are radio buttons, not ticky-boxes. I cannot see how this could possibly be abused. Edit: lj_biz post, December News post. |

Scene: 6A demonstrates sucktastic communication skilz, Take 473. 6A_Cornfield won the coin toss over clairvoyant_wank. First post, yadda yadda yadda. Sorry. Will bake and distribute cookies in exchange for lube use. Seems Barak has either had his ass kicked out or is moving on by choice. He's being replaced by Chris Alden, former GM of the TypePad division; this is announced, vewwy vewwy briefly, in lj_biz, *not* in News. (It's not even an announcement, it's a link to a release at the 6A Press Center. When comments start appearing on the biz post (and how did anyone at LJ think they *wouldn't*?), they are retroactively screened and then disabled outright. Bad move. Retroactive wanky disabling is apparently worse than Proactive wanky disabling. The Legion of the Outraged do the natch thing, and start posting at the previous biz post. Page 29 includes a cap of the disabled/bahleeted comments in the latest biz post; Page 30 includes user tuilinnarn comparing the LJ team's regular self-inflicted drama to PMS. Most of the other posts take pot shots at Barak and at LJ's lousy communication, are outraged comments that LJ obviously doesn't appreciate users' input or opinions (ya think?), or include demands that LJ get back to the policy clarifications promised over a month ago. Alas, not much funny yet, but I have hopes -- though I sense that the Legion is largely demoralized as there aren't even cat macros. |

SixApart responds to the Better Business Bureau complaints Read about it here. The short and skinny version? Banned users = pedophiles, now in writing from Chris Vail, who represented himself as General Counsel for Six Apart. Not just fan artists, not only fanfic writers, not even limited to fandom, really. |

LJ backs down! (Kinda... sorta...) Thanks to the anonymousie in the last post for the link. Elaboration gets her journal back! And Livejournal apologizes. http://elaboration.livejournal.com/443228.htmlNo funny yet. Just comments filled with congratulations and Y HALO THARs. But the letter from the staff could be seen as having some wank inciting qualities (they restored her account because they gave her no warning and still consider the drawing in question to be child porn). In addition (tell me mods if you want this in a different post): LJ clarifies their clarification of their clarifications again in lj_biz to placate the masses on their "Process Change for Non-Photographic Images." Which includes a tasty new "two-strike" policy. Plenty of tl;drs and sparkly text in the comments for all. Does this mean it will end soon? Plz? No? Damn. Current Mood: Candy-Coated |

see, it's okay--she knows an attorney personally! Over on innocence_jihad, bad_wolf_bitch decided it would be an awesome idea to send a letter to California's Attorney General's office complaining of fandom's shoddy treatment at the hands of Six Apart/LJ. The first few responses to her post are congratulatory. But then come the naysayers. Several naysayers, in fact. Meanwhile, bad_wolf_bitch is confident that she's doing the right thing and refuses to compromise her principles. Or something. After all, what do you expect her to do? Try another journaling service instead of LJ? What are you, nuts? It's the feel-good thread of the year! Ha, ha, ha! ...ha...ha? ... :( Edit: Thanks to a kindly mouse in the comments, we have sockpuppet sightings!Edit #2: She's locked the post in her personal journal with the sockpuppets. Can't think why. Also, now there's a post about this on Fandom Wank if you want to follow the party over there. Edit #3: Someone took screencaps of the now-locked post. |
