100 days since SUP bought LJ. Though I think there's been LJ wank since then...
LJ seems to feel it's worth celebrating that 100 days have passed since SUP bought LJ and does a news post about it.

So far, there are...

Comments about getting rid of the Harry Potter pedos.

And at least two threads talking about how LJ has now removed the ability to create a new basic account. It's plus/sponsored or paid for new accounts from now on!

Edit: More information on no more basic accounts here.

Edit the second: Brad, the creator of LJ and member of the "advisory board" speaks out about the end of basic accounts.

Edit the third: Jason Shellen, VP of Product Development for LJ speaks out.

Edit the fourth: It's now on [info]fandom_wank. Check it out.

Adverts for all without Adblock or Paid, then :/

Not that I'm surprised, but so much for 'no ads, ever.'

That was two owners ago already.

I'm finding the outrage at the removal of Basic accounts puzzling, frankly. How long were people expecting LJ to continue to give stuff away for free?

It's the outrage at getting rid of Basic accounts without announcing it that's really pissing people off.

LJ users would be angry if LJ had announced it, but to just slip it into the FAQ and not tell anyone just makes things even worse.

They were damned if they did and damned if they didn't. The userbase has pretty much proven it's going to flip its shit no matter what LJ does. Not that a lot of the anger hasn't been justified, but we do tend to go way the fuck overboard no matter what they do. And it's not like they actually got away with anything... the change was caught almost immediately. Though I have to admit it's pretty fucked up that they're responding in an official way in the News comments instead of just making a new post. Someone should use LJ as a "how not to" lesson in a PR class somewhere.

I'm not outraged at the removal of Basic accounts-- I'm disgusted at the fact they buried the message, and insulted that their new official rationale is that people are stupid.

Maybe he shouldn't have sold out if he was worried about what LJ's future owners were going to do.

Oh, LJ. The more things change, the more they stay the same, huh?

(For about five minutes there I considered switching my Plus account to Basic just to Make A Statement, but then I realized that I like icons and have no wish to cut off my nose to spite my face.)

I've decided that icons here are more important than icons there. I must have MANY boobie icons for the possible boobie trains.

True! I could probably use more than one boobie icon, myself.

Apparently logged-out (or anonymous) users are also having a problem viewing any journal flagged as containing "adult content." I don't know if that's a problem caused by the change or an actual policy change, but if it's the second, I predict much entertaining wank.

[info]limyaael
2008-03-13 02:42 am UTC (link)
Nope. When I logged out and tried to look at a journal flagged as adult, I got the usual "Are you 18?" message, but normally when I click the "Yes" option, it lets me through. Now, it works a moment and then sits on the same page.

Do you mind if I post this to f_w, or would you rather do so yourself? Something like this deserves a wider audience, I think.

And extra linkage : responses over at Insanejournal.

Wow this is just... plain stupid. I never thought I would actually see the day when LJ did this. I have a paid account on LJ so it won't affect me but I feel bad that the option is gone for others.

Colour me both totally unimpressed and very unsurprised. I was wondering when LJ would decide that Basic Accounts were an unprofitable liability.

I have no idea where the hell else to even post this, so I'm trying here.

LJ has perhaps the most ironic advertisement ever on it right now.
