My Problem With NaNo, Let Me Sho U It
So I have sorted out what my trouble is with NaNo and has been since 2005.

Well, okay, I'm not entirely sure about 2005, because a large part of that was that November 2005 was the month I met Nigel, and I became preoccupied with the beginning of a relationship and having sex on a regular basis.

But apart from that, my trouble is and has been that, after winning in 2004, I began trying to take NaNo seriously.

    This is a fatal mistake.

While it is all well and good that I want to take on these big ambitious projects--the Lilith Davis Chronicles, the Pernfic, YA novels involving half-sirens and/or lesbian separatist werewolves--they are best attempted at other times and at a slower pace.

    November is for silliness.

I realized I was taking NaNo far too seriously this year when [info]tresca_cho's suggestion to add ninjas and stir seemed like a bad idea. It's NaNo! Of course I should add ninjas!

But, you see, it is the Pernfic, and I have specific goals for the Pernfic, and there are no ninjas on Pern.

I am up my own ass about it this year. That's why it isn't working.

The year I won, I padded my word count with comic relief pirates, gratuitous gay sex, and a song about rum 75% of whose lyrics were "rum". I also set the thing in a fictional world of my own devising, which saved me a lot of research, although my seamanship book was invaluable. This year I can't find my Dragonlover's Guide to Pern, which was a body blow to my writing effort, and I am trying too hard to write the thing in Anne McCaffrey's voice, which is a stupid idea in the first place. Also I am trying to write something actually serious, which never works for me. Possibly all my enormous unfinished projects need to be revamped and made more silly.

The Pernfic will be finished eventually (with added silliness and flirting). It will not happen this month. I am abandoning NaNo this year, on the grounds that I am not in the right headspace for it. Next year I'm going to come back strong with Discworld-meets-Hornblower--and maybe even a ninja or two.

    It's Saturday, right?
I just finished Unseen Academicals. I love Pepe so very hard.

I have lunch plans with [info]goddessgoddess, T., and their friend S. This is probably a good thing, as my food intake the past few days has consisted of a can of not at all good soup. A meal I can chew would be nice.

Am wearing The Bra That Fits. At present there is only one. I have taken steps to remedy this. It is a front-hook. It kind of has to be. There are eight rows of hooks. Also wearing The Jeans That Fit, courtesy of [info]hcolleen, and a not bad tshirt courtesy of some thrift shop somewhere. Smelly of the day as yet to be decided. I'm thinking Hungry Ghost Moon.

Why did nobody tell me that they are squirting the kids with water on Modern Family? We have been doing that for years!
(I love Modern Family so much.)

But seriously, it seems like statistically Barney from HIMYM should have an STD by now. At least herpes.

    Yes, Worgen Are Werewolves
They don't follow certain standard werewolf tropes, like the whole full moon thing. So what? "Werewolf", from "wer wulf", meaning "man-wolf" (where "man" stands in for "human"; we all know that shit pisses me off, but that's language for you).

Even if they didn't shapeshift, they would still be werewolves, because the worgen form is a combination of human and wolf.

    On This Day
Today is the International Transgender Day of Remembrance.

On this day we remember those we have lost to hatred, who have been murdered because their gender presentation did not fit the kyriarchy's cis*normative standard. Here is a list of the trans* people bigots have murdered since last year, that we know of, with as much information as is known about each victim and each case.

We remember these people using the names (where available) and pronouns corresponding to who they really were. We remember that they were murdered for being true to themselves, because in a kyriarchy only cis* people have the privilege of self-determination, and because who trans* people are is considered wrong, scary, dangerous, deceitful, and a mental illness.1

Trans* women are my sisters. Trans* men are my brothers. Trans* people of non-binary gender identity are also my siblings. The family of my heart is a little smaller this year, the world a little poorer, a little less beautiful.

I remember you, my sisters, my brothers, my siblings. I will keep fighting.

less, because Mariko-scene now happens on the lawn, the kids are finally playing, Seiran is on the phone, and Subaru no longer steps into the sand
more, because of an author note reminding me to close the Omi-thread properly here or in the epilogue
amount of chapter now in continuous text: 50% (discounting two small one-line-gaps and a bit of tinkering for effect)
scenes written: everything in the East Gardens except the ending of "When did you plan to tell me?!" (that's next)
character who is not inclined to take the new information calm and with a grain of salt: Subaru
character about to learn the hard way that Subaru can make scenes: Seishiro
interesting by-product of that: reality infusion for elder Makoto regarding the temper of the Sumeragi head.

    Dealt with, for now.
Thanks to [info]doombuggie's indispensable and much appreciated aid yesterday, I was able to get the paperwork I needed. Bright and early this AM I took my quivering self to the office, where the manager made copies of everything to take to the caseworker (she said she was going in this afternoon) and put a "recieved" stamp on all of the originals.

Nothing I can do now until December 18th. My hands continue to shake.

The cats have been doing their job, though. Last night there was some contention between Anya and Molly as to who would curl up on my chest. Being Boss Cat, Molly won of course, and Anya snuggled up at my side.

so weak and powerless over you
So apparently some people are in an uproar over President Obama bowing to Emperor Akihito of Japan. Even Miss Manners oh-so-smugly weighs in (not that she's usually relevant to today's world). I fail to see the grave offense; first of all, it is Japan. Everyone bows. Yes, the President isn't just anyone, but it's roughly equivalent to a handshake, and I for one feel that he shouldn't be below him to put forth polite gestures such as it. Second of all, he is the Emperor. Give me a break. Would such uproar take place were Obama to genuflect before the pope?

If one wants to criticise him, I suppose one could correct his form, which was rather awkward. But the simpering about how it either shows weakness or is just Not Done smacks of cultural imperialism, lingering insecurity, and stereotypical US-American arrogance.

So, long time no post! I posted the sixth chapter of my novel-length Founders story on LiveJournal, Skyhawke, FF.N, and the Archive of Our Own, which is now in Open Beta, and which, strictly as a user and not getting into fannish politics or whatever? I fucking love how it's set up. There are a few flaws, but overall it's a really nice way to upload.

Firstly, the features I like. )

Things I think other people would like but that I haven't used. )

    Issues I've had. )

Anyway, my stories uploaded there are all at this link.

And in honor of the actual chapter posted, some music from YouTube, with accompanying blather. )

more because: "Kid's in the park", "Tree Talk" and "desk sex aftermath" got some content

    character being unexpectedly useful: Godzilla
character not enough in the scene yet: Subaru

quote of the day: "Father's a vet."

related side-note: I'm still discovering the features and options of the AO3 by uploading single fics and sorting them. I especially like the series option that allows to gather connected stories in a sorted fashion. I'll have to find out, if it's possible to sort a fic into more than one series... :)

    An Open Letter
Dear Company That Runs My Apartment Complex,

Hey, so, Michigan has medical marijuana. We passed the law a year ago. I don't know how you guys could have missed that, but apparently.

Anyway, thanks for the little note you left on everybody's door saying omg noes someone could smell marijuana in one of the hallways and it says in our lease that there's no doing illegal stuff in the apartments. That's cool.

    Only, here is the thing.

It could be that the person whose marijuana somebody smelled does, in fact, have a prescription for it.

It could be that that person has and uses marijuana perfectly legally and can prove it in court and if you try to evict them over it they will sue you for every last dime the company has for housing discrimination and they will win.

Now, it could be that someone is indeed breaking the law in their apartment, this is true. But it could also be that someone is not, and those of us who campaigned and voted for the medical marijuana law do not appreciate it when you outright state in your official communication that marijuana is an illegal substance.

It isn't. Right now, in Michigan, marijuana is no more illegal than my Ritalin.

    No love,
    Wolf A. Woman, Slytherin

Maybe I need to do some situps or something

On the tube today I was standing between seats, reading a book, minding my own business when the gentleman sitting in front of me looked up. The following exchange occurred:

Him: Would you like to sit?
Me: No thank you, I’m getting of at the next one so I’m fine.
Him: Sorry, I didn’t realise earlier.
    Me: ….

He thought I was pregnant. I know my posture is a bit crap when I’m standing on the tube so my gut kinda gets pushed out a bit, but I’m starting to consider getting a t-shirt that says “Not pregnant – just snacks too much.”

After some N.E.W.T. Orientation, they started transfiguring an apple to a mango which was hard since you must change the color of the red apple to a yellow one. Ron had so much difficulty he changed his apple to a red mango that made Harry sick. It looked like someone pour blood on it. Hermione had no difficulty, like always, she perfectly changed her apple to a yellow mango earning her ten points to Gryffindor.

“How did you do that?” said Ron as they went down to the Greenhouses for Herbology.

“I learn Ron, not ask” said Hermione as they stopped at the entrance of the greenhouse since it was occupied by second years.

    obligatory DW rant here
Apparently, because a desperate and grief-stricken Rose absorbed the Time Vortex and saved the Doctor's life only for him to suck it out her & regenerate, that the remnant power of the Vortex has been slowly turning him mad, as we saw in Waters of Mars.

    Okay! Sweet theory, must admit.

Oh, did I mention IT'S ALL ROSE'S FAULT? Cause she made him regenerate and she "selfishly" took the Vortex in her (because fuck, in her severely emotional state, she couldn't remember anything from Boom Town -- HOW DARE SHE HAS FEELINGS FOR HER BEST FRIEND/GIRLCRUSH ARRRGH) and if Rose was still around after Doomsday, she would have just fucked him up even more and egged him on to be a lonely god of emoness.

    I LOOK FOR LOGIC; I FIND NONE. I FIND NOOOOOOONE. ;______;

FAN THEORY I JUST MADE UP GUYS REALLY: The Ninth Doctor takes the Vortex energy out of Rose to SAVE HER LIFE and accidentally sees everything, including the break of the time lock surrounding the War by the Master and the ~triumphant return~ of Gallifrey. When he regenerates, he forgets, but the closer he comes to the event horizon when everything will change (SUP "END OF TIME") his mind slowly turns against him to keep him from remembering. Thus, the madness and arrogance and Lonely God shtick we've been seeing, the constant reinforcing of I'M SO ALOOOOONE AND THE ONLY TIME LORD ;_____; ---- so he never remembers that Gallifrey is coming back, until it becomes impossible to hold back and that ---- swush. (Swush?)

Gallifrey comes back, the Time War is broken out of his lock, insert some crap with Daleks, and by the end the Doctor is no longer alone and also looks like that one chap from Party Animals. SWUSH! REGENERATE!

    Yeah?

less, because I cleaned up the file, tossed out no longer needed notes, marked the proper layout and thus got rid of all the excess stuff cramped in the first third of it.
scene structure as of now: {Tree Talk} - Some 'splaining - Ameru - waking Sei - waking Su - Michiko - {More 'splaining} - kids in the park - Mariko - "When did you plan to tell me?!" - "Fuck tradition!" - { all the rest (Yue, Home, Office & co.)} [legend: done, partially there, {missing}]
amount of chapter considered done & tinkered: 60% (in continuous text: 33%)
main issues: an introspective Seishiro, a rune-curious elder, a worried dad, and an assertive Subaru throwing everybody (but one) out of the room.
    quote of the day (1): "Can't be a T-Rex. They're already dead!"
quote of the day (2): "And?"

partially related side-note: I played a little more with AO3 and though the import function works on none of my story sites to a degree that I'd trust it not to garble things up, it's by far the most promising & usable archive site I've come across so far.
I've started to upload not only my TBX-fics but also my GR fics to it. Those of you, who recall me and my archive attitude from Ranger-L-times, probably know what that means. :-)
