I have two questions I'd like answers to, if you don't mind, oh people of ask.
1) I'm looking for books on technical writing, storytelling, and creating novels. What would you recommend I read first?
2) What writing conventions are located in the US? I've heard of WriterCon, but surely there must be more. (If answering, please supply me with the state and admission cost of the convention as well. Thanks.)

2:26 pm - last.fm?

I'm just wondering: is it possible to connect your scrobbler on last.fm with your 'current music' in JF? Kind of like in LJ?
(I get lazy typing up artists names and song titles sometimes, esp if they're in kanji...)

1:56 pm - JF Support info, anyone?
|

lauchlen
|
Hello all,
I know this might not be the place to ask, but I'm trying to find out how to contact JF support via a channel other than this one. I need a mailing address for sending monies too.
If anyone knows an email address for the maintainers of JF, or can direct me to one of their journals, it would be greatly appreciated!
Feel free to email or PM me the info.
Thanks a bunch.

If a really big meteor were to hit fandom right now and annihilate both the het and slash portions, would you be opposed to dinosaur fic becoming the dominant life form?

There was this Academic Wank some time back. There was two historians (I think, maybe they were English Academics) who were releasing a biography of the same poet at the same time because it was 100 year anniversary of his death.
One of them managed to fake up an "originally, never before published" poem of the writer, and planted it with a woman who managed to convince the other that it had been written by the poet and handed down through the family. He published it, and three days or so after the book came out, the first academic revealed the hoax, and that if you read the first letter of each line of the poem it spelled out something like "this other academic is a wanker".
Does anyone else remember this? I did some poking around, but I can't find it yet. If you have any idea where I could find the details, I'd really appreciate it.

6:21 pm - A Very Important Conundrum
|

melannen
|
I have recently come into possession of 42 large packages of cherry Twizzlers that were left over from a fundraising drive in 2002.
They are quite rigid - some of them will bend if you're careful, most of them snap instead - but they still look and taste like perfectly good twizzlers*. I have just eaten one (it took me about ten minutes and was rather like eating home-made jerky.)
What should I do with them?
(If I take your suggestions I promise to take pictures.)
*take as given that there's such a thing as a perfectly good twizzler. For non-Americans, Twizzlers are long, hollow, twisted straws of red waxy/gummy candy that're based on the concept of licorice straws but don't actually have any licorice in them.

8:35 pm - the most canadian question ever
|

ecchaniz0r
|
So I'm trying to remember the name of a canoe paddle manufacturer (yeah I know). A lot of the counselors at my summer camp who caught canoeing or who did extensive tripping had this kind of paddle.
I cannot remember, for the life of me, the name of the company. I do, however, remember the logo. It's a black crane or heron with its wings outstretched in such a way that it kind of resembles the rebel alliance's logo from Star Wars. The logo's usually placed a few inches below where the neck stops and the blade starts.
...Yeah, I know, daft question. But it's been driving a friend and I totally nucking futs (they didn't go to the same camp but are familiar with the paddle logo and the people who owned the paddles adoring them). I've been googling like mad, but so far am having no luck.
This has been your ridonkulous Canadian query of the whenever!
ETA: coffeebun you are my hero. ♥

9:55 pm - Can anyone recommend a beta reader?
|

misachan
|
I'm looking for a beta for a Watchmen/DCU story set in some nebulous time period between the end of Final Crisis and Race for the Cowl. It's about 4800 words and focuses on Rorschach and Nightwing.
My regular beta doesn't know Watchmen. Are there any betas out there who can take a look at it for me?

8:30 pm - Two questions
|

charamei
|
1. Can anyone recommend a good writers' support comm/site? I'm writing character-driven fantasy, but there's a fair chance of SF in the future, too.
2. As a reader, how do you react to an unlikable MC? I don't mean a House figure, necessarily; the MC carrying my A-plot has basically the same ethical views as the bad guys, his only objection being that they did it to him. While he does have some redeeming characteristics, and some interesting issues, they're not going to come into play for a good few thousand words into the novel.

1:57 am - OpenID and JF
|

melannen
|
Has anyone ever successfully managed to use a Journalfen OpenID to log in anywhere else? I have been getting conflicting reports.
I've never managed it, but that could be because my journal style is crufty and broken.
(This is relevant to DreamWidth - if you've ever commented on my JF, there is now an openID account under your JF on DW's servers, so that you can still control the comments you made that I imported. But if you can't log in to that account, you can't control them, so they may want to stop importing JF comments.)
(Feel free to try using your JF openID at Dreamwidth, and delete a comment you made on my journal; testing is good.)

1:39 pm - Grammar Question
|

notjo
|
In regards to this sentence:
"In 1877 he attended the Conference of Head Masters of Institutions and of Other Workers for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb in London, on behalf of the Glasgow Mission."
What is the best way to make it clear that's one conference with a very long and clunky name, and not two? I tried to ask my prof, but she referred me to the style guide on citing sources. I can cite the source just fine, I want to make it clear that it's just one conference in the actual text.

4:53 pm - Etsy on F_L?

Does anyone know what the etiquette is on F_L regarding posting of people's etsy stores? Said store is selling wee cthulus, and I'm not sure if that's either fandomy-enough to post, or if posting anything where someone I know may get money is bad form.

12:35 am - Feminist Literature
|

evilsqueakers
|
I need to make an essay comparing the two works "Roman Fever" by Wharton and "The Storm" by Chopin. Both are short stories and they're quite related, what with infidelity and all. But I need to make it fit this argument: Choose two of the works you have read this semester, and make an argument for their inclusion in a list of pieces of "feminist" literature. Comparing won't be a problem, I know how to do that, but I wonder if the infidelity is the unifying feminist theory since these were written about 40 years apart (Chopin was 1898 and Wharton was 1934) and neither woman apologizes for their actions. But I don't know because we haven't even discussed feminist literature this early in the semester. I'm so confused as to what that buzz word even wants within the context.
It's only a topical essay between 300 and 500 words.
So help?

So, I recently got my Mac (about a week ago) and I want to take it to class. The problem is that I need a bag that's roomy enough I can throw my purse in, too. Plus carry a school book or binder. Freeing up hands is a good thing for a natural klutz. And since I'm completely lost in the world of Mac toys, I need some recommendations. I have a Timbuk2 I store it in and can take to things like Dragon*Con. It's just the whole not having enough room to throw the kitchen sink in as well.

9:08 pm - Linking from a Flash animation
|

ruuger
|
How does one add a link from an embedded Flash (SWF) file if you only have the finished file, and no software to edit it. As in, how to to make the animation act like a link when you click it. Just adding an 'a href' around the embed code doesn't seem to work.
