Phoenix Falling, Is More Like It
In case people either miss it or want to continue their discussion, here's the link to the post at&about Phoenix Rising.

Please don't break any more of the fine china, ya little hellions. We need it for when your grandpa comes to visit next week.

You know, I just found that on Aja's journal, just like I'd just opened the link to reply in a new tab on the post below yours and got a new dog. Fandom is running strangely in sync with me in an out of sync way today.

I think the PhoenixRising people are acting very responsibly here and I applaud that. I hope everything works out for them and that this kerfluffle increases interest in it. Personally I am looking at going myself because it's fairly close to home for me, and I won't have to spend a buttload of money on plane tickets.

Since the OP of this topic originally decided to kill the discussion on this topic I'm trying to think about what I said that might be worthy of being restated...

My girlfriend ran cons for a while in eastern Canada and she and I discussed this matter this afternoon. She felt like if it was one of her cons she'd rather know than not know about the accusations so that she could have the time to evaluate them for herself. She also felt that the Phoenix Rising staff had a sufficient time to decide that and potentially arrange for replacement guests. So from her viewpoint it was good for them not bad... well bad to have to deal with it but there are worst times and worse ways to have to deal with the wank.

There were some implications that Bad_Penny was somehow responsible for people contacting the con staff despite the fact that the BP mods have gone out of their way to discourage this kind of behavior. I think it is worth repeating that we have no evidence at all that any BP community member has emailed the con, or that those who did didn't have some legitimate connection to the con other than some story they are following on the internet.

I see BP as an outlet for a certain kind of ... odd ... investigative journalism. I don't blame sports reporters when they uncover my favorite athelete is using performance enhancing drugs. I don't attack newspapers for uncovering corruption in my political party. I blame the people who have disappointed me or embarrassed a group that I admire or am associated with.

Exactly. This story has creeped into several fandoms of mine that have very little connection to Harry Potter, ranging from discussions about "those crazy wackjob Harry Potter people" to what fandoms I had been in in the past would have done about the plagiarism behavior and the nature of fanfic. Maybe if I was a Potter fan I'd be concerned about the public image of my fandom right now (but to be honest it wasn't very good to start with because of the behavior of people like Heidi and Cassie that was simply bad not unethical).

As I joked in the now deleted discussion that you know you are in trouble when the Law & Order fangirls are talking about you. There are very few things worse than finding a fic written by a fourteen year old fangirl trying to write dialogue for lawyers ;)

Well said.

She felt like if it was one of her cons she'd rather know than not know about the accusations so that she could have the time to evaluate them for herself.

Just imagine someone asking questions about it at the panel - this would bring the staff into quite a difficult situation if they hadn't noticed.

Man, I so want to be at PR, but don't know if I'll be able to afford the trip and accomodations.

I'm hoping that the invites get recinded, myself. It would be refreshing to have a con without the Heidipatrol.

Hmm. Something I was going to note in the uproar in the previous post, about not letting "internet stuff" cross over into "important real life things and personal wellbeing"...

...Speaking at a con is really not "important", and certainly has nothing to do with personal wellbeing. It's just another facet of fandom, something that's nice to do but doesn't mean much. I mean, I was invited to be a panelist at Otakon one year. I didn't do it because although I'd have gotten my admission free of charge, I couldn't possibly have paid for the travel costs or the hotel. It would have cost me major money to speak at the con, for little more than a chance to speak to people about something I find entertaining.

I don't know if this con was intending to do more with these two, set them up with pricey hotel rooms and pay their way (I assume "guests" get more perks than "panelists"), but even so, it seems absurd to me for people to think that the guests in question would somehow be losing income or prestige or anything more than they already had lost - that being the respect of a good portion of fandom - just because they wouldn't get to speak at a con. I mean, if they get uninvited, it's kind of like when Cassie got blacklisted from ff.net, as far as its importance in the grand scheme of things.

(Yes, so their invite wasn't about fanfic, apparently. It's still not a big deal if they get uninvited.)

I agree. As I've said in other instances, I'm too lazy to do something about a situation I'm not personally involved in (enjoy fandom as I might, I have enough trouble getting RL things done for myself), but I think there's a huge difference between costing CC her book deal and costing Heidi & co. a con gig. Even with everything she's done, I would probably feel a little bad for CC if she lost her book deal and her book wasn't plagiarized (obviously if it actually is, I won't, but I won't jump to conclusions on it), but if Heidi can't ZOMG speak at a con... I won't be shedding any tears for her. Con =/= Real Life. Con = Fandom. It's still a bit lik trolling, I suppose, but still... not like emailing a boss or something... not going to cost anyone there job here.

I've got a question about CC and public appearances. (haha everyone point and laugh at the n00b)

Wasn't there a story going around that she or her minions were threatening people about taking pictures of her at one of the NY events? And now she's doing Dragon*Con? What's up with that?

Well, at Nimbus (Florida, a couple of years ago) we were told not to take photographs in any rooms in which CC happened to be present in case she was in them. And we were given the hairy eyeball by her friends and admirers if we (such as me, for example) happened to be playing with the strap of a camera in a room in which she happened to be present.

Which is why I laugh immoderately when people accuse me of being a CC fangirl when I object to the demonising of her - I disliked CC (and her shrieking fans, for they were there and they did shriek) from that moment on, but don't find it necessary to find her guilty of all crimes from plagiarism (and she is guilty of that, no arguement) to puppy kicking to child molestation to raising the devil by saying the Lord's Prayer backwards.

I let my dislike of her specific behaviour, and the behaviour she encouraged in her friends, at that event be enough for me, and pass on.

Does that answer your question?

Well, at Nimbus (Florida, a couple of years ago) we were told not to take photographs in any rooms in which CC happened to be present in case she was in them.

I'd request that no one (at all) takes photographs ever, anywhere, just in case I might be in the vicinity at that point of time. One cannot be too careful. People think all that camera clicking is harmless fun, until someone loses their private image.

Jeez, internet celebrity, it's a bitch.

But seriously, people do need to draw a clear distinction between certain behaviour (bad) and the people who do it (not necessarily evil). The only analogy I can think of is that when bringing up children, you make it very clear that whilst disliking certain behaviour, you still love the child very much.

Though she'd probably only recite the Lord's Prayer Backwards if she saw it in a book first.

Um, wow. That's an even better story than the one I heard. I can understand wanting to be cautious but that's ridiculous. The only time I've ever heard of photography not being allowed at a con is during meet&greets with the paid guests where "official" photos are being sold. Was she a paid guest at Nimbus? Is her image a money-making enterprise for anyone? Is it protected by copyright? Has she sold exclusive photo rights to Reuters? Is she Suri Cruise, come back to us from the future?

Do I ask too many questions?

It's one thing to ask people to respect your privacy, but when you attend a public event like a con, don't you give up some of that expectation?

Is that just hyperbole, or are people actually accusing her of these kinds of things?

Because yeah, she's a plagiarist. Like you said, no argument. But I haven't seen anyone accusing her of other crimes - and a child molester is a pretty serious accusation - can you link to some examples of this?
