Heidi responds.
I think she apologizes.

ETA: According to Aja, the death threats are real.

Jesus fucking wept, HP fandom.

ETA: Accusations of death threats may be false.

My sympathies to Heidi. My favorite reaction to this debacle, however, has been Gehayi's. Heidi posts on her thread down there.

So... why does FA take 2 months to remove your fanfic? That's... uh... yeah...

Lazy mods?

Yeah, but that's just... that's too lazy... it's not like they only have one person doing it...

I think that they store them for two months as a favor to the author, in case you want to undelete and get your reviews back. 'Course I know less than nothing about FA ~ I'm guessing based on bits & pieces I've read lately.

Yes, that's it, if we are to believe a report about someone trying to delete her fics not long ago.

I think it's just their way of working to actually accomodate authors, not annoy them.

Yes, that's it. When we were designing the new system, there was a lot of discussion about deletions. I wanted immediate deletion for precisely the reason that's appearing here - so people don't accuse us of trying to "hold onto" their fics after they want nothing more to do with us - and because it's simpler to implement. A lot of the other admins wanted us to hold onto fics for about 6 months in case someone's account was hacked, their little sister logged in, they change their minds, etc. In the end, we compromised on 2 months (I think it's one month, actually, regardless of what the e-mail says), with the fics taken out of view immediately.

Granted, deleted fics are not being purged at all right now, due to a bug in the deletion code.

That too has reasons, namely that we set a hard deadline of Nov 1 (2005) to launch the new system, because I was starting a Real Job That Pays Me Money then and wouldn't have time to work on FA anymore. October rolled around, I realized "Shit, I forgot to implement deletions!", so I quick slapped something together. But I never tested it and forgot to enable it. Xander realized it was disabled, tried to get it working, and promptly broke the whole site before going on vacation. ;-) (This was why uploads stopped for about a week last spring.) So we disabled it again, and there it sits until somebody has time to go in and fix things.

If you know anyone who's good with PHP & MySQL, please do refer them to the tech team. I don't even know who's in charge anymore; probably Heidi, but I dunno how involved with FA she is after this.

I saw a lot of mixed reactions in response to her post. Gotta say... she's kept a cool head in light of her decision.

Props to her for that.

I've never known Gehayi to lose her head*, and, yeah, this is the Harry Potter fandom.

*Which makes it all the more scathing when she suddenly hauls back and insults somebody.

Then heidi8 insulted herself first and can't blame anybody who insults her after.

shezan is flapping about all over that. Why the fuck does s/he/it give such a flying fuck? Does s/he/it get frequent flyer points for going into people's journals, missing the bleeding obvious and speaking out of their arse?

Shezan's trying to be funny? I didn't get that vibe. The sarcasm wasn't strong enough for me.

I agree that Shezan is amusing though :-)

I'm surprised no one's pulled the "Heidi got death threats! Don't you feel bad now?" card on her yet.

If they try the sympathy card, [info]gehayi can throw it back in their faces as she is actually recovering from an illness - if the argument here is that something bad happening in someone's personal life absolves them of anything they might have done wrong.

I know that. You know that. Would the "you're so mean to Heidi!" person(s) know that? Maybe. Would they care? Probably not.

Would Gehayi shred them into itty-bitty pieces? Hell, yes.

She's too nice for that. She'd probably respond with well-thought-out comments a couple of paragraphs long.

That's what I meant by "shred them to pieces": a pointed take-down of their comments. Much like she did to Heidi.

Nice to see someone put their money where their mouth is.

If a lot of authors delete their stories en masse, maybe FA will be forced to address this situation. I still think FA is an awesome archive, and fics can always be resubmitted if the proper apologies are made.

Actually, [info]gehayi has decided not to write fanfic anymore, so who knows? Apparently deleted fanfic is the thing to do these days.

Because of this story?

I don't agree with the shitting on the HP fandom tough. No, the HP fandom DO NOT condone plagiarism. Unless CC and her gang speak for the entire fandom (which they certainly don't), I don't get why anyone would draw that conclusion.

No, for personal reasons. She nearly died last year, and has decided to reprioritize. Also, a lot of her friends have decided to stop writing, and I'm sure that influenced her.
