Heidi responds.
I think she apologizes.

ETA: According to Aja, the death threats are real.

Jesus fucking wept, HP fandom.

ETA: Accusations of death threats may be false.

Chumps and chumpettes?
Here's an actual apology. Not a suck-up or an excuse, but something... quite well-written, actually.

Kudos, AngieJ. That takes balls

Good for her. She's a role model for two people.

It's a good apology but...her comments about folklore are CRAP.

When tales are told in an oral tradition, the text does not remain stable in teh same way it does in written literature. Phrasing changes, different parts are expanded or contracted depending on audience reaction, etc. etc. It is true that certain stock phrases are used repeatedly, but the whole story is not repeated word for word.

I think she was just writing about that as a way to explain why she included the story in the first place. The important part was when she said that while the story has a history in oral tradition, it was wrong to not mention that the exact text came from another book. It reads less "I shouldn't have done it, but here's why I did it" and more "This is why I did it, but I still shouldn't have done it that way", which I guess to me makes the difference between an excuse and an explanation.

Heidi, on the other hand, makes weird statements that sound an awful lot like the 'apologies' my (lawyer) father used to make. It took a long time to get him to stop twisting words around and loading up everything with excuses.

You're totally right that she is trying to explain why she did things, not excuse it. That portion of the excuse happens to be something that always irritates me.

Now that I'm less cranktastic, what is great about this apology is an admission that something wrong had happened, an explenation of why this own't happen again, and an admission of responsibility.

Absolute Kudos to AngieJ - It reads as sincere and adult response to this situation.

You know what? I agree. That's an apology, and I respect her for it.

Now that takes some class. She owned it, explained it and explained what she was doing to make it right. Kudos to Angie. I hope things go well for her future. This is what an apology should be.

Good for her! She also seems to be the only one who's taken some initiative to contact the relatives of the people she plagiarized from (I never did see a definitive statement that CC had received permission from Pamela Dean, but it does seem fact that she only contacted her after being prodded). Would that other plagiarists could actually admit it.

Impressive and genuine, rare to see someone actually willing to do some soulsearching and not just give a token excuse for bad behavior. Not that every accusation made against oneself should be heeded but it does no harm to think about it even if it's just a little.

WOW. I didn't know her, but I didn't expect something like that due to CC and Heidi's reaction to all this.

Congrats to her. It takes balls indeed.
