You know what? I learned about writing my own words back in 4th grade and how to properly credit someone else's work by 8th grade, and I grew up in South freaking Carolina, where our educational motto is "Thank god for Alabama!"

So, no, first fandom or not, that's no excuse for anyone. Firefly fandom, when it started out, was well over half newbie writers at the time, and I haven't found any plagiarism in that fandom, not that I've looked lately.
