Edit: To be explicit, I did talk to the head of the conference yesterday. Amy Tenbrink confirmed that there were death threats, but that that was all that she confirmed. I have since talked to her again and clarified that the threats were not specifically directed at or to any one person.

Hi all,

I'm one of the lead event organizers of Phoenix Rising, and the person that Aja spoke to last night about the death threats we received. She and I crossed wires, I think. Yes, Phoenix Rising has received death threats in the last couple days. These threats were not, however, directed at any specific person, though they were obviously related to the plagiarism issue. Ebony has stepped down from the panel for reasons unrelated to the threats, and we have spoken to the other two panelists. We have contacted two ISPs about the matter and they are looking into it.

Hi Amy. Can you confirm whether or not Heidi was asked to leave, or if she left on her own? This is a bit confusing to me because I've seen conflicting info coming from Heidi and Aja on this topic.

Similarly, if you have any IP addresses that you would like us mods to check in relation to the death threats, we can see if they've posted at [info]bad_penny and either ban the user or turn anon off again. If you want to send them to:

Heidi left on her own. Phoenix Rising was still investigating the plagiarism issue as of yesterday, and I was speaking to Heidi as part of the resolution of that. I mentioned the negative attention that we'd received, including the death threats, and Heidi decided that she wanted to step down. I accepted her resignation and we left it at that. This is actually the first time we've talked to anyone outside our staff about the contents of the threats, but I understand people's concern -- and I'm really glad you guys turned anonymous posting back on so I can clear some of this up.

Do you mind if I pass your e-mail addresses on to the authorities? I don't know if their investigation will go anywhere, but we've turned the entire investigation over to them, since they're much more qualified to handle it than we are. They may well be interested in talking to you. Also, I'm happy to talk to you guys off list if you're concerned about people in your community. My e-mail is amy@thephoenixrises.org.

I am more than happy to provide any IP information if required to authorities and you can take my email address, but I don't have the capacity to speak for PJ. You can also pass on that badpennymods@gmail one, which is probably the best one to provide.

If you have any evidence or stuff that you've received (IPs, emails) just email me directly at adjectived_noun@hotmail.com now and we can talk about it and I can search through the posts. I think there's a JF function that allows admin to search through emails provided for account creation but I've not used it myself and I'm probably even likely wrong about that too.

That I don't know the answer to. I'm hesitating to repeat actual text in public because of the investigation, but think along the lines of "I hate plagiarism, I have a gun, I'm coming to your conference." Again, that's not a quote, or even similar to what we received, but that sort of "definitely a threat, but really unclear what the intent is" communication.

I hope that helps a bit. I know this comment was close to useless, since I can't really give out the actual text.
