Ponderings on "Pawn to Queen"
The Pawn to Queen wank is one of my very favorites, one I go reread every so often when bored and in search of distraction.

During a recent re-perusal (is that a word?), something struck me:

Did strega!Blaise remind anyone else of Ariane Emory turned fangirl-Mary Sue?

Did any Cherryh fans not like the Caitlin/Florian rips-offs, and say so?

And -- where was the outrage over Snape having a dinky dick? C'mon, there had to be some!

ETA: Please don't comment on the original wank. While I wouldn't mind replies showing up in my inbox nearly three years on, , I'm not sure the wank-reporter ([info]mrsparkle) or any of the other commentators would.

Did strega!Blaise remind anyone else of Ariane Emory turned fangirl-Mary Sue?

Yes, because that's exactly what she is.

I emailed Riley at the time about mapping characters in HP onto Cyteen. She sent me four lengthy emails as a defense. I know I mention that a lot, but I still boggle at it. They all said the same thing in slightly different ways.

I don't know how much you'd see on the WIKTT list, though.

Ahhhh! I was right.

It'd be one thing to use Ariane as a blueprint for an HP OC,making adjustments to suit the world.

Shit. Ariane would have been a meaner, leaner, Umbridge.

Eh, I'm all linked out at the moment. I shall be lazy, and wait for the entertainment to come to me. :D

I was on WIKTT -- still am, maybe? no, I unsubbed -- but quit even pretending to skim the emails as soon as I realized that it had turned into a cheering squad for each member's romance-novel plot.

Oh, god, yes.

Hermione doesn't strike me as the type to rollerskate, period. Weren't inline skates the in-thing back then, anyway? Do they even make old-fashioned rollerskates anymore? I'm trying to imagine the feather-boa on inlines and...no. Just -- no.

Reading over the greatesthits entry makes me wonder if Msscribe's tentacles extended there too--because now I am paranoid. This gotsnape person? The siegfriedwanks poster in the comments? Who knows?

I would love to read more on PtQ since much of what I've read so far only scratches the surface.

I am a Cherryh fan. I am very much not a Snape/Hermione fan. I'm not getting near enough to that thing to even notice any kind of rip-off.

And -- where was the outrage over Snape having a dinky dick? C'mon, there had to be some!

I had to go back and check, but to my surprise (which I probably shouldn't have been, considering) about 90% of the discussion of Chapter 30 on WIKTT was about the introduction and not the story. There was one long thread on The Ethics of Reviewing (and, damn, I'd forgotten all about my own tl;dr contributions), plus a post from Susanne/Pigwidgeon titled A Lesson in Power.

The "Ethics" thread was mostly divided between those who were worrying and hand-wringing about Riley's fans daring to post so much about her story that it forced her to make herself ill answering her mail, and those who felt that using Riley (or, you know, anyone who was dumb enough to make themselves ill answering e-mail) as a standard for judging author behavior was kind of short-sighted. It never got really heated, and I didn't see anyone mention Snape's penis. More's the pity.

Other than that, it was pretty much crickets chirping and tumbleweeds. I also checked the Snapefic Liberation Front archives, and they were too busy having a flamewar involving gotsnape and Julia to bother noticing that Riley had updated. Dark Sarcasm was likewise full of uncaring.

Here's what I said on Darkrosetiger's journal at the time the sex scene came out. (My anon comments are immediately recognizable to me.)

...And that's pretty much my reaction to the sex scene. "My God! Get with it already!" I think I was too busy being bored to death and rolling my eyes at the note to be outraged about anything.

The book was C. J. Cherryh's Cyteen. Riley loved Cherryh, and this book, and thought it and HP (and Ayn Rand) would mix well.

Needless to say, it didn't work.

Oh lord, I remember being on Snapefans when Riley joined and started posting. I remember following PtQ for about three chapters before my head a-splode. I think it was, as many have said, the rollerskating snake that was the last straw. And weren't Snape's chambers supposed to be some superposh silk-and-velvet-and-marble monstrosity (in Slytherin green, of course)? Or is that some other badfic I'm thinking of?

However, I did follow mctabby's PtQ cliffnotes version for many chapters after -- that was funny stuff.

Oh, Christ on a cracker. I remember reading Snape/Hermione fic *way* *back* *when* when I was into HP. The ship was positively swamped with pseudo-intellectual, allegedly feminist tripe, leaning heavily on 1003 allusions to other (better) writers, obscure female Russian Constructivist artists, 20th century composers, etc. etc. ETC. in place of--y'know--*good writing*. Hermione invariably was turned into the nerd grrl's Mary Sue; Snape into the ideal feminist man, every character in the book other than Hermione and Snape was forgotten in favor of dozens of irritating OC's (or, at least, Harry and Ron invariably were forgotten/mocked/bastardized/turned into Hermione's own personal Crabbe and Goyle--'cause they're *far* too *unintellectual* for our new Miss Philosopher Princess to even scrape off the sole of her shoe, natch--and screw friendship! Think of the master race er, *meritocracy*!). . .

Love the pairing. But, HOLY SHIT, the tedious preening crapfic it spawned. . .

"Did strega!Blaise remind anyone else of Ariane Emory turned fangirl-Mary Sue?"

Worse - I misread strega as stega, which inevitably led to my mind thinking "Stegosaurus".

So now every time I read parts of the fic, I am mentally pitching Blaise and her komrades as talking Stegosauruses. In school uniforms. And boy, does _that_ make the smutty scenes more interesting.
