Cassie Claire Plagiarism? NO WAI!!!!!!
Sharp eyed wankas here have spotted Cassie Claire ripping off Gone With the Wind in her famous Ron/Ginny fic.

I figured this was related to zombie!wank, so it should go here.

I'm sorry, I'm seeing similarities between the two, but not clearcut theft.

Same here. And really, similarities between GWTW and most romance novels abound.

I really have to re-read GWTW. Haven't done that in a while.

Yes. If she got the inspiration from Gone with the Wind, its modified enough to be different. :\

When I first read that sentence, I thought, "Hey, that sounds like that bit in GWTW," but then I saw someone posted the real sentence and it wasn't as close as I originally thought.

Even if it was "theft", I don't think that it'd be that big a deal - imo the opening lines of GWtW are up there with "It is a truth universally acknowledged..." and "All happy families are alike..." They're all incredibly famous first lines of incredibly famous novels and it's not unheard of to twist them for dramatic (or comedic) effect in writing.

That doesn't seem to be an issue with publishers, though. The Harvard girl with the two books? Some of the passages were a little vague, but there was still enough to pull her contract.

Yeah. Describing two characters with a combination of unusual facial features that make them look especially good in vaguely similar terms is not plagiarism.

Which brings me to my next point.

If you're going to add new info to an old wank report, you need documentation, as per the rules:

3. Documentation, people. Links, screenshots, whatever. "Did you hear what Suzie Sexpert told Poppy Z Brite? I'd tell you, but then I'd have to kill you!" won't cut it.

On top of that, the documentation has to be accurate. I don't think it's similar enough to plagiarism. Inspired by, maybe, but it also sounds like standard "he shouldn't look good, but he does!" description from romance novels.

Close enough for me.

Of course, it's easier to say so when this is kind of a thing with CC.

Yeah - I wouldn't call it plagiarism, but I do think she used the GWtW sentence(s) as a base. And I know people said above that lots of people riff off of popular and well-known things like that, but that wasn't a riff, it was a shortcut.

It's not even really a paraphrase, much less plagiarism. She gets a pass on this one.

But oh, God, the woman can make even Weasleycest smut into a pretentious borefest. Who gave her the idea that avoiding contractions makes porn sound classier?

I like contractions and run-on sentences in my porn, it makes it feel as thought everything's happening really fast and I can't catch up.

The same person who told her that present tense narrative gives your writing a world-weary edge of stylish ennui?

Eh, so she uses emphasizes the black lashes on green eyes. Not up to her usual plagiaristic standards. Her book, on the other hand.... From the description on her website of her upcoming novel: (http://www.cassandraclare.com/) Soon Clary is introduced to the world of Darkhunters, a secret cadre of warriors dedicated to ridding our world of demons.

A crappy (but quite successful) author named Sherrilyn Kenyon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0312984839/ref=pd_rvi_gw_1/104-2626156-3971144?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance&n=283155) has a series of books about "Dark-Hunters," which if I recall correctly is yes, a cadre of warriors dedicated to ridding our world of demons.

I'd give benefit of the doubt on similarities between Sherrilyn Kenyon and Clare because Rowlings borrowed the boarding school for wizards cliche from a number of more capable writers.

Oh, god. She's borrowing ideas from Kenyon...why?! I read on hers, Fantasy Lover or something, and blech. It was just bad...then again, it would fit the rest of CC's work, so that might make sense. Also, her whole book premise reminds me a lot of Buffy, too. Really rather appropriate, isn't it?
