Canon? We don't need no stinkin' canon!

| I don't know if this actually goes here, but I can't think of anywhere else to put it and this is too weird not to share.
So, there's this comm, bsc_snark on livejournal, which basically lives to do the same thing to the children's book series The Baby-sitter's Club and its spinoffs that deathtocapslock has been doing to Harry Potter - which is to say, whipping themselves up into a frenzy of froth and hate over things which for the most part really aren't that big a deal.
For example, they frequently refer to the titular club as the Baby-sitter's Cult (teen and tween girls who are the main characters in a series about babysitting depicted as being strongly interested in babysitting? My goodness, can you imagine?) Kristy (a thirteen year old who is admittedly very bossy and whose bossiness is often played for laughs) is similarly called K Ron (a reference to L Ron Hubbard, I think). As befits a cult, Kool-Aid is frequently mentioned as an explanation for any plot holes or characterization inconsistencies. And so on. Like DTCL, it's basically gotten to the point where if a character (or the author) makes even the smallest mistake, they're dogpiled on.
The real crunch came, however, when someone referred to a thirteen year old character (who had admittedly done an exceedingly selfish, thoughtless, dangerous and downright rotten thing, that she was explicitly called out and condemned for in the text) as "uppity, sanctimonious, Pharisaical, narcissistic, delusional, ungrateful, unteachable, shiftless, snotty, devious, whiny, bratty and self-important". There's also the comments "Spoken like a genuine sociopath" a bit later on, as well as "Let your sociopath daughter experience remorse, Father". Tell me that does not sound like your standard DTCL diatribe toward Harry, Hermione or Ron.
Look, I'm the first to admit that a lot of the BSC books can leave a nasty taste to the mouth when re-read in hindsight. Their treatment of autism (and several other reasonably important RL issues) were definitely iffy even for the time the books was written. The characters can be annoying. The author and ghostwriters do have some really odd ideas of what is and isn't okay sometimes. And some plot holes you could fit the whole of Connecticut in, so I'll admit to sporfling at several comments aimed at certain books which actually hit the nail on the head. But DTCL has pre-programmed me to consider this level of bitterness and derogatory nicknaming as a pretty big warning sign, and a potential marker for either some major funny or some major unfunny. | comments: 4 comments or Leave a comment |

| First off, first post. Second off, FANTASTIC idea for a community. The STFU shall never die (though I think letting it die in the first place was an overreaction myself)!
Well, with that out of the way, I bring you just what the title says: a very special Snapewank. Why here and not dedfromsnake? Because that community is for mocking FANS of Snape, and this... hardly qualifies, though it still denies canon just as much if not more than they do. It's from your pal and mine, thanfiction. Hoyes...
http://daydverse.livejournal.com/107539.html
This is his justification for why he infamously wrote Snape the way he did in "Dumbledore's Army and the Year of Darkness." It's full of self-promotion and JKR-bashing; it's quite apparent that not only do his fanbase believe he's better than canon, HE fully believes it, too! Dive in if you want, but be warned, here thar be dragons.
Obligatory disclaimer: Use male pronouns when referring to thanfiction, no jokes about how he's "not used to being a guy" or anything like that, etcetera, etcetera.

| So, hello everyone in this shiny new comm!
I've been waiting to be able to post this, since it's funny. And sad. (I debated between using the smirking Kuei and the angry Kuei, and decided I'd go with smirking. 'cause in the end this shit's more funny than sad.)
( ATLA shipwank overview follows )
I can only imagine how things are gonna look about a half a year from now when A:TLoK finally hits the TV screens. Especially since Bryke apparently got clearance to do a full season instead of half a season.
Hang onto your seats, folks! *offers bowl of popcorn to all* | comments: 10 comments or Leave a comment |
