Like most heroes, Harry Potter possesses the requisite Boy Scout virtues: trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, and reverent.

Hahahahaha. Somebody stopped reading at GoF, it would seem.

Oh, come on. After this introduction: "Slate's "Assessment" columns dissect the conventional wisdom about real people (L. Ron Hubbard), fictional characters (Scooby-Doo), companies (Whole Foods), body parts (the prostate), and even weather patterns (El Nino)." people still think he's being serious?

Fine. ::sniffs:: I'll just take him seriously too, then: Y HELO THAR DRACO MALFOY!!

*facepalm* My fandom has the dumbest people.

At least they're funny, though. Examples:

so instead of reporting on important things like the war in iraq or the problems with the enconomy, this person chooses to criticize a beloved childrens book. the real question is not whether harry potter deserves his heroic title, but why cant this writer find something worthwhile to write about.

Until the war in Iraq is over, no one is allowed to talk about anything else. AWESOME. (Although I'm presuming that if the article was a positive review of Harry Potter, s/h/it would have a problem.)

Well, you have my sympathy Chris. Not only did you have to fend for yourself from birth, but you have yet to become a well known author, haven't you? Your only claim to fame is the ability to write an article dripping in sarcasm and bitterness on a subject that is unoriginal and unresearched sounding. Better luck next time.

As opposed to someone who writes reviews of satiric articles dripping in sarcasm and bitterness - those people are certain to go onto great things.

in the name of journalistic integrity, you might have also wanted to mention that rowling mentions time and again that harry himself would like nothing better than to just be a normal kid.

Journalistic integrity. Journalistic integrity. In a satiric article. Because Harry Potter is SERIOUS BUSINESS.

*cries*

LOL at slate for re-posting an article that is four years old.

Way to slack, Slate! Way to slack!

It boggles my mind that Slate can find so little to cover that it would waste time and space reprinting an outdated scathing article about Harry Potter. An article, whose only possible useful purpose is to rile people up. For a second time.

You know, if the Slate Editors felt like stirring up shit, they could have just come to Fandom_wank, and bitched about House's Aspergers like the rest of us.

I thought it was funny. And I've heard similar opinions expressed by Potterfen, usually the ones who think Harry is a little sod cos he's so meeeeeen to all the Slytherins.

Perhaps the author of the article in quesion IS one of those pillocks who fervently believe they ARE Slytherins?
