Only a Matter of Time
So, CC's City of Bones is set to be released in April and there's already arguing in the customer discussion. Yeah, this can't end well.

I can't wait for the kerfuffle that will ensue when the publisher inevitably releases the new book "If I Plagiarized" by Cassie Clare.

Reading like "incense through the air, smooth yet intoxicatingly." Just what are the pages of this book laced with?

You forgot the best part, though: how she's been caught ripping off her own fanfic in this book. Fans of the Draco trilogy may love CoB in part because it's familiar--so familiar, in fact, that it's something they've read already! Looks like all those closed-down cafe press stores she created for DT didn't stop Clare/Claire from trying to make money off of it.

And yes, it is fully possible to plagiarize yourself.

. . . wow. The negative is outweighing the positive. What is the world coming to?

You know, the negative reviews are clumsy and ineffectual. It's the florid, sincere positive reviews are positively brutal in their excess.

"Having laid my hands on a copy of City of Bone, I retired to my bodur bordwar booder toilet for an afternoon of pure reverie. My hands stroked the book's firm spine like a patient etherized upon a table, its velvety smoothness tingling beneath my fingertips. Ah, City of Bon, mon ami, I whispered. Too long have you haunted my thoughts. A delicate shiver like a doughnet scrap in a coffee cup during a San Francisco earthquake went through me. I needed this book, this beautiful blonde literary scion of an ancient fantasy tradition, more than anything I'd ever needed in life. I leaned back and held the crisp cover to my lips, extending my tongue to lap at its turgidity, its tumidity, its torpidity, its tepidness, nay, even its tumescence. A white light filled me like the souls of dead hookers, and at last I knew, truly knew: this was no mere vulgarity of archetypes, but a Homeric original, an ode to all that was possible with merely woodpulp and ink. Slowly, I slide the rustling pages down my naked body, the paper burning my skin, not because of the acids -- for it was truly and wonderfully "acid-free" -- but because it held that promise of inevitable pleasure, that stiffness that could plunge my innermost secret places. And then the waves of ecstacy plunged over me, harder and faster, until...

Anyway, I hope the sequel makes it all the way down."

Actually, I'd buy the book if it had reviews like that.

If this were just some little book in fandom that people didn't care about, no one would bother with all of her borrowed characters or quotes. I certainly didn't know about any of this, I just liked the way she put words and plots together. And a lot of my high school buddies felt the same way. We were just reading a fanfiction.

in fanfiction you shouldn't have to site explicitly because all you're trying to do is have fun and entertain your fans not make money.

So long as you don't recognise the source and are only in it to entertain, plagiarism is okay, then? Good to know.

For some reason, 6% of the people who view CoB on Amazon then go and buy mood balancing tablets.

(Also 6% go and buy The Secret Country by Pamela Dean).

Dear Rowling,

Not reading it in the bookstore. Not OMG STEEEEEELING it on the interwebs. I'm buying it. Because I want Boodith CC to get my money. She deserves it, for all the lulz she's brought me. However unintentional those lulz may have been.

My favorite part of the reader discussions is that every single negative review has "edited by the author" right under the original post date.

This is so full of win. 2007 is going to be a banner year for wankage.
