There's a potential wankstorm brewing over at Livejournal's Weeping Cock community.

[info]pyro posts an extract from Tao Lin's erotic masterwork Sex After Not Seeing Each Other For a Couple Days. Community members WTF over the weirdness for a few posts until [info]spoggly shows up and accuses everyone who posted to WTF of LOL MISSING THE POINT OF THE STORY. In all caps.

Cue low-level wankery as [info]spoggly and a couple of other community members debate whether or not Sex After Not Seeing Each Other For a Couple Days is high-minded enough to be exempt from being laughed at on a bad sex comm. Pretty small so far, there's just that thread and a couple of other potential 'this is high art and you're all too dumb to get it' posts - both so far commentless - but may grow depending on how persistant [info]spoggly gets.

ETA: And we have bahleetion.

Yeah, I got the feeling that the story was meant to be that daft. Largely because trying to imagine an even remotely skilled author doing that in all seriousness just makes my brain hurt, I admit, but still.

Looks like that thread has been deleted.

I wouldn't call it trollfic, because doesn't that imply that he's just doing it to annoy someone else? He has a very specific style that people either like or hate, and clearly the person who posted it to weepingcock was on the side of hate.

Trollfic is when you deliberately write in a way that provokes people to laugh and scream, to write in a way that imitates naive writing mistakes and unintentional absurdness and so you can get laughs out of people's reaction -- which seems to be exactly what he's done here.

If we take that fic seriously, as if he'd done it without realizing just how clunky, awkward, unintentionally disgusting and ridiculous his imagery was, or somehow thought that that was something to work for, then he'd be a badfic writer. If he did it deliberately to get the goats of his critics (which seems to be the case), then he's a trollfic writer.

I've written trollfic for laughs. It's something fun a lot of people do at one point or another. But if people are trying to say that this is his actual style, and he thinks this is good -- then LOL. The Pit is full of novice writers using his style.

I find trollfic and badfic interesting -- but I'm not going to get on your case for liking him. A lot of people don't get how exquisite and layered with irony My Immortal is.

Having read his other work, I don't think that it's deliberately trollfic or badfic. It is how he writes. And I think the images were intentionally clunky, awkward, and disgusting. That was the point, more than it was to be traditional erotica. I personally like his style- it's weird and awkward and slightly whimsical, in a weird and awkward sort of way. But it's very much not for everyone, and just as many people dislike him as like him (if not more).

There's an okapi in that story. I don't think I've ever seen an okapi in a story, smutty or otherwise, before. That, in itself, is nearly as amusing as all the people who think that story's meant to be serious.
