thanfiction turned Harry Potter's Terry Boot into a ~~Gary Stu~~ well fleshed out, totally unique character that is so beloved that another fanfic writer wanted to borrow him.

thanfiction says "No, he's my shiny OC. I won't give you permission to defile him!"
Other writer says "Pfft. You can't make me not use him. *uses him*"
thanfiction says "Not my OC, you bitch!" and reports the other writer for plagiarism.
thanfiction then writes tl;dr rant on fanficrants

Denizens of fanficrants are less than sympathetic.</lj>

Especially when they find out that thanfiction's fanfiction is on Lulu.

A self-described "pseudonymous" source tipped this bawwwesome, bawwwwful wank-in-the-making to me.

I don't watch Heroes, but here is my source's description:
Heroes is kind of not such a great show as in "great show," but more like "trainwreck." And they've been retconning these two characters like whoa in order to justify a romantic story line between the two. And then this picture came out, it's a spoiler for an upcoming episode, and it looks like he killed her."

(I want to take one last moment to remind you that these links discuss spoilers, so know what you're clicking.)

My source then pointed me to the sylarelle community on livejournal, specifically here and here, where people go a little bonkers trying to come up with explanations for the picture, you know, to save their ship. Theories include "they're faking her death!"; "it's a dream sequence!"; and "it's not Kristen Bell, it's Ali Larter!"

I also found this in the mylar_fic community.

Clairvoyant because, well, if the Sylarelle ship sinks, there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth, but also gleeful dancing by other shippers, I guess.

Renowned anime director, Miyazaki Hayao makes some potentially controversial comments about the current Japanese Prime Minister emphasizing his liking for manga, anime/manga/games/etc. as a cultural export, and the dangerous effect of media on Japanese children. Also, the dangers of nationalism. Over at Anime News Network forum, people discuss this. Some agree with Miyazaki, others disagree partly or completely, some people express disappointment in Miyazaki and question the quality of his works, but overall the discussion is quite civil. The harshest comments so far:

"One keeps promoting manga.
One keeps making shitty anime. (...)"

"The political comments are just elitist bs. (...) if he has stated publicly that other people's work in anime is crap, then that definitely qualifies him for a big [ignore] tag."

Nothing too bad, right? Well, according to penguintruth, the thread is full of fanboy outrage and people are making "absurd, baseless accusations" and twisting Miyazaki's words "into a personal attack on them so they can get all riled up for no reason." And as we all know, "Making assumptions about Miyazaki based on a pretty reasonable statement and not supporting those assumptions with anything of substance is what we call "trolling", and it is the result of either willful ignorance or the intent to stir things up needlessly."

Knowing the ANN forums it might be worth keeping an eye on this (unless a mod steps in).

mistress_siana posts a joke rant. Sure, it's somewhat off-topic, but most commenters (in the first couple of pages at least) seem to find it amusing.

However, not everybody is cool with such a political joke.

This is an embarrassment!

I avoid everything political, but I feel compelled to post here.

However, this is a volatile mixture of politics and FFR, so there may actually be more butthurt later on.

And she even published her memoir, "Called Out of Darkness: A Spiritual Confession,"
And in this new 245-page memoir, Rice presents her former life as vampire writer as that of a soul-searching wanderer in the deserts of atheism; as someone akin to her most famous literary creations -- Lestat, her "dark search engine," Louis the aristocrat-turned-vampire and Egyptian Queen Akasha, "the mother of all vampires."

The critics, on the other hand, not so impressed with her book:
The New York Times, Christopher Buckley slammed Rice's memoir as "a crashing, mind-numbing bore. This is the literary equivalent of waterboarding."

Her next book will be Jesus as a minister. After all: "I mean, I've made vampires believable to grown women. Now, if I can do that, I can make our Lord Jesus Christ believable to people who've never believed in him. I hope and pray."

So, it seems FH is going to have a bot to crawl around Livejournal, much like the Fanfiction.net one.

To be fair, the post says the following
The Bot will honour your viewing options, i.e. if you have 'Minimize your journal's inclusion in search engine results. Selecting this option also means that your entries will not be publicized at external sites that have content partnership with LiveJournal' ticked, the Bot will not include you in Fandom History. However, that also means that whilst you might actually like having your journal show up in Google and other similar search engines, etc., in order for your journal not to be included on Fandom History, you do have to have this option ticked. Unfortunately, you can't have it both ways.

TPTB on Fandom History do give an assurance that if someone has had an article created about them and they do not want it, by following the procedure under Help:Article Deletion the article will be removed.

Edit: The Bot is live now, and it seems to have started with fandom_flies. I have personally followed the instructions to have my articles deleted from the wiki, and my wishes were met and the pages were deleted. Anime-Planet is a site where one can mark, rate or submit anime that they have watched, as well as recommend anime from one series to the next (If you Like Hellsing you might like Gungrave because....). But the wank is in the forums.

You see, A-P is in a transitional faze, and version 3 is being built. So the user Spunky suggests displaying the average rating of an anime between .5 and 5 stars. Draken notes that this has been on Sothis' (The brain behind A-P) to do list for a while, but results will only be tallied from the anime lists of trusted users.

Spunky takes offense, and Sothis asks if Spunky even read the previous thread about this idea, to which Spunky says "No, I don't need to."
Sothis locks the thread and a macro is posted.

Spunky folds and reads the thread he was told to read, and he still disagrees. Draken attempts to explain why they wish for it to just be trusted users.

On page 5 It all just goes downhill.

So, earlier this year, NIS America announced that they were going to port Disgaea: Hour of Darkness and Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure to the Nintendo DS late in September, complete with enhanced bonus content. Fans were excited, and all was well... For the Disgaea fans, anyway.

First, it was announced that the DS port of Rhapsody was only going to have the Japanese vocals, where the original PSX version also had English vocals in addition to the original Japanese content. Fans are disappointed, but understanding. ~~Besides, NIS fanboys aren't exactly known for their rampant Angophilia.~~

Then import-saavy fans found out that the Japanese version of the DS port included "chapters" from another game in the series: Angel's Present (which was never released in North America). NIS America themselves (and this becomes important later) eventually confirmed this on their official page for the English version. Fans were very excited!

September comes and goes, Rhapsody DS comes out on schedule, but there's just one problem: Where was the new content?

After a quick huddle to make sure that it's not just them, fans on GameFAQs and the NISA Boards press NIS America for answers. At first it's assumed to be a glitch in the game, but after weeks of no solid news, and even conflicting news (It's in! It's out! It was translated! It was never translated!), RPGFan comes out with the truth: NIS America actually removed the content entirely from the English translation, due to "localization issues." And then, you know, advertised it, and from all appearances, lied about it when asked.

Oh, and in the midst of all this, the official site mysteriously had the page advertising the additional content removed, and I quote: We're just doing that until we get that sorted out, since we don't want to confuse more people without knowing for sure what's going on."

(But they forgot to take the exclusive character out of the "Characters" section. Oops!)

Consumer outrage and wank seem inevitable, and honestly, probably completely justified in this case.

Edit: Siliconera reports on the missing content, as well as the many other glitches in the DS version.

So there was a film called An American Carol that opened this weekend; produced by the same guy who made the Airplane and Naked Gun comedies, and featuring a filmmaker named "Michael Malone" who makes leftist documentaries and wants to abolish July 4th as a national holiday (gee, you think they're parodying anyone?), who gets visited by the ghosts of 3 former presidents and reforms and decides to love America after all.

Well, it only came in ninth in box office returns this weekend; first place in in the box office take was Beverly Hills Chihuahua. So early this week, the film's creators posted their reaction to this development: a statement accusing theaters of fraud.

We have had heard from numerous people across the country that there has been some ticket fraud when buying a ticket for An American Carol this past weekend. Please check your ticket. If you were in fact one of those people that were "mistakenly" sold a ticket for another movie please fill out the form below. Hold on to your ticket so we can have proof.

If you have noticed other irregularities with the theatres in your area please let us know in the comment section below. For instance, Rated R film rating (when in fact we are rated PG-13), posters not being up, not being listed on the marquee, image or focus problems, sound issues, etc.

We are investigating.

...I'm kinda torn, because on the one hand, based on the previews I've seen, it's far more likely that the sales were low because the film probably sucked. But on the other hand -- frankly, I'd be skeptical too if I came in ninth to a talking chihuahua.

That also means that show defenders will jump into the forum and call the reviewer an uninformed idiot if they give the episode a bad review. Casey's review of Clannad ~After Story~ is causing the most fuss with the fanboys that the mods had to get involved.

Despite the tone, I have to admit that you have a point. I didn't draw the doujinshi in question, only scanned them in.

The situation got out of hand after the initial contact. When I pointed out that they were claiming scans I made, they threw a fit and accused me of being everything just short of being the Anti-Christ. In the midst of this freak-out, I discovered that YugietheCutie actually not only took scans but also took online fan comics, English ones to boot, and claimed them as well. It basically became an argument against an art thief. Add this in to the feeling that I essentially destroyed a doujinshi I personally bought and paid for so that an art thief could use it and mass-advertise for attention, and I just got a little bit angry.

I apologize to you and anyone else who has been irritated by this exchange. From now on, I'll mention the art theft first and mention only my scans as a passing thought. :)

I’m not saying that my MONK books are creatively any better or worse than Monk fanfiction. But I am not violating the copyright or intellectual property rights of the MONK creators. I didn’t wake up one morning and decide to write MONK books. They came to me. I would never write about someone else’s characters unless I was asked to by the people who created them (or own them). Why? Because they don’t belong to me.

Why shouldn’t the creator/author have control over how THEIR characters and THEIR creation is used?

To sum up: I know I do but I'm allowed so neeners, you hateful little plebe. In fact, my ~~fanfiction~~ tie-in novels are better than your shitty fanfictions cause they WANT me to write it! Take that!

He then continues to ~~beat the dead horse~~ reiterate that tie-ins and fanfiction are different. Why? Because the original content owner will respect you in the morning.

The difference between fanfic and a tie-in is simple. Let’s use Monk as an example.

A fanficcer wakes up one morning with a burning need to write a story about Monk having sex with Natalie, or Disher, or the fanficcer, or all of them at once, and posts that story on the Internet without asking whether Andy Breckman, the creator of Monk, approves. He doesn’t care whether Andy is offended by the work or is harmed and embarrassed by its dissemination. The fanficcer’s need to play with Andy’s characters is more important than Andy’s legal and creative rights.

A tie-in writer, on the other hand, is selected and hired by Andy to write a Monk story. Andy has absolute control over what that hired writer does with the characters and the world that he created, loves, and has worked very hard to sustain. And Andy profits from the sale of any work based on his creation.

Now you can argue that the “Monk having sex with Natalie” fanfic is better than any of the tie-in work, but that doesn’t change the fact that the fanfic story is done without the consent of the creator of those characters and violates his copyright.

The fact that fanficcers won’t do authors (and rights holders)the simple courtesy of asking for their consent, and abiding by their wishes, before appropriating their characters clearly demonstrates how little respect they have for the creators of the characters and worlds that they love. It demonstrates an outrageous and unsupported sense of entitlement over something they didn’t create and don’t own.

Still rather small as far as Lee Goldberg wanking but it's sure to keep going on and on and on and on and on. Methinks that Lee Goldberg has taken all his profits from writing ~~fanfiction~~ tie-in novels and invested them in KY and lube.
