Doomed! [04 Oct 2003|01:34pm]

maryavatar
[ mood | Navel-Gazing ]

Hmmm, some actors have bad luck with sci-fi/fantasy TV. Gary Cole had great success as the Midnight Caller, but as soon as he branched into genre TV everything went splat. American Gothic and Crusade both died very early in their lives, despite both being very good shows. Stick to movies, Gary!

Then we have Adam Baldwin, who has even worse luck with sci-fi TV: every sci-fi show he's been a regular or recurring character on has been cancelled. The Cape, The Visitor and Firefly were all enjoyable (well, maybe not The Visitor, but I'm not the best judge) but were still cut down and left to die.

That got me thinking about actors whose shows aren't cancelled. Shows that are dreadful crap, but keep going in the face of bad scripts and indifferent acting. There are actors out there who have built their success on hopping from one bad show to another. *cough* Kevin Sorbo *cough*

Now, I love a cheesy show as much as the next girl. I'm a huge squealing Andromeda fangirl, fer chrissakes, but this seems monstrously unfair.

I open the floor for debate. Any other 'cursed' genre actors? Any inexplicably golden boys/girls? Anyone want to spank me for calling Hercules crap?

John Doe [09 Sep 2003|01:59am]

[ mood | high ]

Heh. I know why John Doe knows everything. Read it in SFX.

spoiler )

Kind of a sucky explanation, but considering this week's plot, I have to think it's consistent with the shows quality. WTF was up with the twin thing? So the fact that the suspect had a twin spoiler )

HIGHLANDER FAN [21 Aug 2003|10:09am]

I'm becoming a major Highlander geek. I guess you know you are one when 1/4 of the nation is experiencing a black out and all you can think about is DID MY TAPE WORK? (It did.)

So far I have written only one Highlander Story and that is a X-over with John Lawless. http://www.anzwers.org/free/odyssey/FIRSTSON1.htm

But I have a problem. I keep looking for slash and other than some Duncan/Richie comments - - well it isn't even as if I don't see it. I've become a raging HET. I like Amanda. I like the kind of relationship she has with Duncan.

Furthermore I have been turned off by a lot of the Slash stuff I have read, mainly because I like my man-sex raw not couched in a lasting homosexual relationship. If you want to play house. . . well I'm still looking.

In the meantime I am thinking about plot bunnies.

RICHIE: I don't do that. I like girls.
METHOS: And I like chocolate ice cream. But I don't eat it all the time.

UK waves bye bye [13 Aug 2003|12:08am]

Farewell Firefly. Objects in Space was a pretty good way to go. Would have been nice if Kaylee had got a shag though. Um, not from the creepy bounty hunter though.

See ya, The Sentinel. We've got another couple of eps to go, but it's on it's way out, and since it took five years to get it over here God only knows if they'll ever show it again. Damn, it looked dated.

Still, John Doe is apparently 'coming soon', so deadshow fans have something to look forward to.

Wow, The Sentinel is even gayer than first season Smallville. They were snuggling in today's ep. Why did the UK not get this series sooner? I've been deprived of a huge slice of slash-bait.

UK Firefly running order [18 Jun 2003|02:28pm]

maryavatar
[ mood | Mystified ]

Anyone interested in the UK airings of Firefly can see them here. I'm fairly sure this is the order Joss Whedon intended them to be shown. We seem to have been getting them in order, rather than the haphazard way they were shown on US TV.

Any one want to read a new X-over story? [18 Jun 2003|08:37am]

judith
I have an new and interesting (I hope) X-over story called FIRST SON. It is actually a four-way cross between THE HIGHLANDER and three roles played by the late Kevin Smith (John Lawless, Lawrence Hayes, and Ares.) The story is het and rated R (people have sex but you don't get the gorey details).

I'd like to iron out a few more little glitches before I send it to my webpage and try to get it posted elsewhere. So if anyone would like to try a read, let me know.

Is now up in a draft format and covers zines that feature both Ray Vecchio and Benton Fraser. Please stop by and let us know if we've missed any zines. We are short on gen zine recs, so look through your piles of zines and drop us a note. Feel free to link or forward to any list or web page that is appropiate for both gen and slash listings.

Highlander Swords [29 May 2003|05:01pm]

judith
I had not watched HIGHLANDER until it started showing on TTN (soon to become SPIKE-TV the first network for men). I've had a few interesting ideas one of which is to write a story which will probably involve crossovers with three other stories. It is working itself out and could be very interesting (and right now I am trying to figure out if I do it slash, het, or both (two versions)).

I do have one question. Most of the fights have involved Mac when he was wearing a long coat. I can see a sword stashed in the lining (though it might be a bit difficult to drive a car) but today there were two fights where the principals were wearing short leather jackets. I don't think the swords fold uplike white canes or pool cues. I can see if the fight occurred somewhere swords just might be lying around -- antique stores, museums, homes of Xena fans, my father's house, etc. but what if its on the street. Do they just materialize? Please let me know if I missed something -- or if they did.

So we've had the pilot and one ep of Firefly over here, and I'm hooked. I was distracted for a moment by the obvious Kaylee/Inara subtext, but then I found a dirty little Jayne/Simon fic and hooo-ee! I'm all over that :)

Swing some J/S recs my way and I'll be a happy little blogger. The nastier the better *eg*

The Sentinel [23 May 2003|06:45pm]
maryavatar
[ mood | Interested ]

The Sentinel will be getting it's first ever showing in the UK, starting from the 17th of June. It will be on the Sci-fi channel at 6pm.

After seeing the huge amount of slash fic this show has generated, I just have to give it a try. But gosh, did they have to put it on at tea-time? My kids are going to hate me for cutting into their toon time.

Highlander, Endgame [08 May 2003|01:30am]

[ mood | bored ]

Highlander canon is so screwed up. I loved the first film, I loved the TV show S3-S5, and I loved The Raven. Everything else... meh. I recently saw Endgame and WTF? Like they needed more ways to headfuck the fans? Everyone said 'don't watch Endgame, it'll only piss you off!' and they were so right.

Uhm, rant over. Sorry about that.

CROSSING JORDAN [06 May 2003|04:49pm]

judith
I know this show isn't dead, but I am dying to discuss it with someone.

It seems that there are three different shows going on at the same time and the Executive producers can't agree on what they want. Even from the beginning the music has changed over and over again as they try to figure out where it is going. Now they are selling CD's of the music -- for those with serious personality issues.

Sometimes it is a Jordan solves the crime story -- talk it out with your father -- play the roles -- everyone knows doctors are good at that right? Don't like those shows much.

Sometimes it is an ensemble show with a collection of very strange and twisted characters. Bug and Nigel -- how could you ask for more slashy characters. Never seen any CJ slash -- can someone point me in that directions. People who think Kevin Sorbo is too old to go chasing women aught to watch this -- her boss definitely can't keep his dick in his pants (but at least has problems that result from it.)

Sometimes it goes back to the "back story" which is quite interesting and complex. That's the one they seem to use at sweeps and for the season ending episode. Just as it seems to be figured out there are new twists. Just hope it doesn't become a court case involving her father -- ugh we have enough lawyer shows.

Sorry, can't wait for this show to die to discuss it.

Miracles [10 Apr 2003|01:27am]

The TVGuide came in the mail and lists Miracles showing Monday night at 10. I was so excited! So I checked at tvguide.com, and (sigh...) it shows two episodes of The Practice, back to back. It's so cruel to raise one's hopes and then dash them to the ground...
