Google search terms are so meaningful and don't fluctuate at all, and the movies are completely, utterly faithful to the books. (If they were they'd probably be worse movies.)

I basically agree that I wish there'd been more in the books to show James changing from bully to growing up. He saved Snape's life, he fought Voldemort, he stood up to prejudice against Muggleborns, he died trying to fight for his family, he was obviously pretty brave and had a sense of humour and apparently gave up being a bullying pillock; but it would have been nice to be shown the later James instead of just trying to imply it from the events. I'd have enjoyed more adult Lily too!

Equating James to the jocks in American high schools like so many Slytherfen seem to do isn't an interpretation I agree with. James et al were bright pranksters with geeky nicknames for each other who carried out a secret research project, who used to try and fail to impress girls--they have a right to be called 'nerds' on that American scale, though it shouldn't even be applied to Hogwarts anyway.

Seriously, SS and CoS were pretty faithful adaptations and I thought they were the two least enjoyable films. And +1 to the rest.

I liked SS and CoS the best, myself, though I enjoyed them all, with PoA being the least due to Sue-per Hermione (which I'm fairly confident even someone who didn't read the books could find obnoxious, which, incidentally, was actually Cuaron's fault) and not actually explaining anything. If nothing else, the films are certainly an easier way to fulfill a Potter fix than the books are. I think I might actually (please don't shoot me) like the final battle between Harry and Voldemort BETTER in the film, with Harry actually outfighting him.

I also like the movies on a more selfish note, for converting me to Harry/Luna. I mean, come on, you look me in the eye ant tell me Yates doesn't totally ship it.

Ha, I'm not one to tick someone off for preferring a movie version - you should hear my radical opinions on classic literature and which Austen adaptations I enjoy most.

I think part of my dislike for the earlier movies probably stems from the fact that they were more kiddy than the rest - I was 14 and 15 when they came out, I think I felt indignant because in my head I was an adult and deserved more srs movies (also I just don't like CoS as a book, either). There are definitely aspects of later movies I get annoyed with (pink dress whyyyyy), but the tone of the first two have just always rankled with me.

Also, the idea that jocks in American high schools are always bullies is bullshit. Yeah, in my high school, there were a couple jocks who were asses. But the really nasty bullies -- the scary, horrible ones who would latch on and never, ever stop -- were not jocks. They were boys in AP classes, who took college-level math classes in high school, who weren't on any sports teams at all, or in band, or in choir, or in any other after-school group activity. They were the ones you did not want to be alone in a room with if you were a girl. So-called "jocks" were your best bet against that group, because the jocks would stand up for you.

At my public high school the people who went out of their way to antagonize others were part of any group, but the one area you did not want to go in was definitely the band/choir/drama hallway, if you weren't in one of those. People would just stop talking and stare at you until you got out of their hallway. The cheerleaders and jocks actually tended to be the nicest, most welcoming groups.

(At my other high school, the bullies were mostly the kids with parole officers, which made them also the largest clique at the school.)

I loved my high school experience, personally, probably in part because, like you, there was no one particular group that went after anybody. While there were informal associations of douchebags who heckled other students in gym (I recall one guy who always followed behind me when we ran track and sang Aaron Carter songs in my ear), I never got the impression they were particularly popular. They certainly weren't popular enough to, say, get away with rape by solely virtue of being popular like these Snapefen claim the Marauders would be able to...

Most highschool rapists get away with it by virtue of shame and silence, not popularity.

At my high school there were cliques that bullied other ones, mostly. They'd try to make life miserable for those in the "rival" groups. There were also some kids no one liked and everyone picked on. Also, some bullies were looking for a reaction, and if you ignored them enough they'd go away, but some were trying to *break* people. If you ignored one taunt they'd just keep trying more. In fairness, there were also a few people whom everyone liked. One was a football player, in the jazz band, and in a lot of honors classes. One of his friends was a kid who was the biggest nerd who ever nerded, but no one picked on him, since his 6'6" friend would hear about it. Go figure.

As far as I can remember the 'jocks' at my school were far to busy, you know, trying to stay jocks(which honestly took a lot of work.) to go around antagonizing anyone. The people who were the bullies were the do nothing, drug users who, I sometimes felt only came to school just to be jackasses to people.

But apparently SIP and the rest of the Snapefen grew up in Shermer Illinois, and they were the poor put upon victims who never, ever deserved what those horrible jocks, and cheerleaders did to them. Tragically they never got their John Hughes happy ending, and it has affected them to this day.

You know, it makes a lot of sense if you think of the Snapefen as coming from Shermer. New head canon!

I'm only surprised the Danemma Harmoanians haven't gotten up in arms over the thought of Daniel Radcliffe as James Potter embracing a redhead.

Just for fun I checked to see what the Snape entries are and of course they're full of how great and wonderful dear ~Severus~ is.

These delusional Snapefen keep reaching, and reaching, and reeeeeeeeeaching. (>_<)

"I like the idea that if the films were ever remade I could play Harry's Dad. I like that idea. That would be a nice way of still paying homage to the series but not having to do ten months of filming."

So I think Dan is saying the role would be ideal if someone didn't want to memorize many lines because the film folks at WB boiled James down to a handful of scenes

Not wanting to spend a whole year on a movie set =/= not wanting to memorize many lines. For goodness's sake. Middle ground, people.

That said, I would love more expanded remakes.

#1... Has she never seen a remake of anything? Why does she think a remake of the HP movies would be carbon copies the first movies with different actors?

#2. Yes, because search engine terms are a totally accurate way of measuring people's opinions. Maybe it's just me, but when I look something up on my computer, if it's similar to something I've typed in before the options that pop up will be what I usually look up using those words.

For example I am admittedly completely obsessed with Last Exile at the moment. Now Last Exile is tragically not the most popular thing in the world, but if I type 'Last' into Google Last Exile will be one of the first things to pop up.

Yep. That's how Google works. Google also seems to be drawing from elsewhere sometimes in the pop-up search terms, like what sites you've visited lately.

But those pop-up search terms really don't mean anything except "this is what people who search for this mostly want to search for." And when you search for "name is" most of them, whether about real human beings or about characters, are nasty. No, Adele is not a "fat cow", jackasses. And Hermione is Draco's slave? Bwuzuh? I don't want to know.

But there's plenty of nastiness even about men. For instance, I looked up "Alan Rickman is". First search term: "Alan Rickman is hot." Okay, he is, in my opinion, but that is NOT the most pertinent thing about him, which is that he's an actor, and an excellent one. After that, here's what comes up after "Alan Rickman is": gay, Israel(?), sick, dead, married to, a douchebag.

People don't normally search for someone using "is", though. Someone searching for James Potter would normally simply search for James Potter. When I do that, I get: James Potter, James Potter Series, James Potter and the hall of elders crossing(?), James Potter actor, James Potter II, James Potter and the curse of the gatekeeper(?), James Potter book, James Potter patronus, James Potter and the vault of destinies(?), James Potter wand.

(Are the terms I put question marks after popular fanfics or something?)

I always thought that Google personalizes for every user. I've noticed that when I do a search it will come up with previous searches that I've done. It's like SIP finds the things that she is looking for. She wants negativity for Lily and James, so she finds some. Then she goes back and finds them again

This, as far as I'm concerned her search engine pop ups say a lot more about her than current public opinion of James and Lily.

Actually, I get the same results as she does when I type "James Potter is" into Google. And I never search for any Harry Potter stuff.

Seriously, if you want to be appalled, think of a bunch of people's names and type "person x is" into Google.

Yeah I know. I got the same result when I put in 'is'. Then I added 'a hero'. We should all do it 20 times each. That would really piss her off. I'm nasty. I did get a good result for the Lego Death Star. Big Bang Theory has a lot to answer for. But it cost about £400.00. I don't have that much money

Ginny hated "Phlem" with a passion and treated her really badly before she "proved" her true love for Bill. Now, why would Fleur "The Veela" De La Cour hook herself up with a poor Weasley unless she was in love with him?

No, Ginny and Molly disliked her because they felt she was shallow and irritating and haughty and otherwise stereotypically French, and maybe they were a little protective of Bill. Given her outburst, and the successive tears, Fleur knew her new family didn't like her, and it was really hurting. Pauvre madamoiselle.

And, Ginny evidently used her infamous bat-bogey curse on people at Hogwarts until it became her trademark.

Doesn't signify. I got known in school for things I did once.

But, again, like with Hermione, it was after she'd done something for them (taking up for Harry and setting an example by showing loyalty to him).

The Golden Trio didn't even become a Trio until after they'd gotten in a life-threatening situation together and Hermione covered for Ron and Harry's mistake.

Snape was the reason Harry survived because Lily was given a choice. Before that, he tried everything to make sure Lily would stay alive.
After he accidentally got her killed, yes. Harry survived because Voldemort gave Lilly a choice. Interesting use of the passive voice.

The Potters never would have been specifically targeted for murder in the first place if not for Snape. Funny how they leave out that bit. And yes, he did try to make sure Lily would stay alive, at the cost her Husband, her baby, and happiness. I can just imagine how "thankful" Lily would have been if he had succeeded.
