Name:A readers' forum
About:This is a community for discussion of any and all fiction created in the [info]establishment, a real person fiction role-playing game. This community does not emanate from the mod-team of the game, and is not endorsed by the [info]establishment as an entity. It is a private posting ground for whoever is interested in its stated purpose (keep reading). Obviously, any players or readers are welcome to request to join, so long as they agree to abide by the rules.

Go by the name: this is [info]edgeplay. The gloves are off, the guns are loaded, there's no safeword. Consent to be discussed, I surmise, has been given by players/authors when they posted fiction publically. Your consent to discuss and abide by the rules is implied in your (eventual) request to join the community. My consent to 'play the review and crit game with you' is given in the form of our accepting your membership-- obviously I reserve the right to refuse membership to anyone whom I consider unable to take the [info]edgeplay. Yes, this is highly subjective. Yes, you might deem that elitist and/or wanky. I can take it. *g*

Reviews can include discussion of characterisation, technique, plot/arc, etc. Any aspect of the fic/log/arc that prompts you to talk about it is up for grabs. However, don't just say "I like this" or "I didn't like that". Back up your opinions with examples from the text or from general writing recognized/accepted techniques or the like (it is particularly interesting to look at the ways RPG logs and arc bend or break traditional writing forms, for example with the POV splits and changes).

There is no minimum length for reviews, but they should be at least several paragraphs. Questions about the same are welcome (i.e. "Something bothers me in this log but I can't pinpoint why, and I think it might have to do with fact X / char Z's attitude / writing technique Y, care to discuss this with me?" is okay.)

This community is not a place for mockery or for flames. Flaming is defined not as saying something negative about the fic, but rather about the player, in a personal way. Slagging on the player will get you a modly smackdown. Posting about an arc or pup for the sole purpose of mocking will get the smackdown as well. We are here for serious discussion, so let's act like adults. I don't like to bandy around words like politeness because I'm of the opinion a lot of it is subjective, but I reserve the absolute right to smackdown on what I think crosses the line. Exercise your judgment, don't throw insults out there, steer clear of ad hominem attacks.

This is not either a concrit community, which is to say its purpose is not to cater to players/writers and 'help them improve'. I believe that authors can learn from reading discussion of their fics, but if this happens here it will be a great side-effect of the discussion, not because that's our goal as involved, thoughtful readers. The point is for readers to discuss said arcs and logs with other readers. This said, I expect that reasoned discussion and critique will happen (it's the whole idea!), and in that sense the 'level of discourse', if you will, should approximate what most people usually put under the umbrella of 'concrit'.

On the other hand, [info]edgeplay is not the place to come tell writers who happen to be members how unfit their chosen characterisation for a pup is, either-- we're discussing about the text that is there, what has been written, not its relation to a hazy real-life 'canon' we all perceive differently (i.e., taking myself as an example, don't come to discuss how omg my Elijah Wood differs from RL-Elijah who seems to be involved in a relationship with a girl - it's irrelevant to this community).

Players/writers are welcome to comment in response to discussion of their work if and only if they can do so without taking criticism too personally (I know this is even harder with a RPG character than with other forms of fic, I'm a player too, we all are real people behind the screen and fragile flowers and unique snowflakes, yes-- but do try). If you disagree with someone's interpretation of your logs or your pup, point to examples in the text that back you up. Players/writers coming in only to whine that people just don't understand them will not encounter sympathy.

Anyone may post a review. If you feel the need to ask the author/player you're discussing the work of for permission, feel free to do so; however this is not required-- if you do so, please make sure you point them to this here userinfo and explain a bit about the community and its principles. Do notpost reviews of your own arc/logs/characters.

All posts will be locked to members only by default. Yes, this means we might be discussing an author behind closed doors without them knowing - this is the point, not to hide from them since they are a priori welcome to join, but to make a space reserved for readers' views, where criticism can be expressed without it being a potential insult flung in the face of the author / made publically available. Writers are encouraged to join the community if and only if they are interested in the purpose of it, and discouraged of joining only to check on what might be said about their work.

Curiosity is a human trait I understand more than well, believe me, but there are reasons it's said to have killed the cat. If a writer requests to join and is accepted, as stated above, I will take it as their expressed agreement to the community's goals for readers' discussion, and as an expression of their desire to discuss, as readers themselves, other players' fiction. If you join out of pure narcissistic need to see what's in there about you, you forfeit the right to take the high horse when you kick a big fuss about it later: it's not for you, it might hurt, and I locked it away so you wouldn't stumble on it unprepared, okay? That's me being nice and considerate.

As for members sharing the contents of locked comm posts with the author, know this: I don't expect a tight lock on a community that I hope to see grow a little and be prosperous. I do expect that you understand the reason for the posts to be locked, and that you understand you might be the one to be 'mean' when you break the lock to go shove a friend's face in a readers' discussion that they decided not to look at. If you feel inclined to do this, I would encourage you to talk to them about the community first, and to encourage them to join-- though only if our goals are of any interest to them beyond the peeking at their 'own thread'. *hammers point obnoxiously!*

When posting, put the log/arc/character(s) in the subject line, include a link to the log or pup journals being reviewed, mention the players names. Use a cut tag for longer posts. A cut tag can be made using the following code:
<lj-cut text="this is the text you click on">this text appears inside the cut</lj-cut>
