Probably.

True story. Twitter suddenly refused to post my tweet! And I couldn’t access twitter.com! I figured my internet was down, but then it turned out to be just twitter. I was distraught in my inability to tweet about my inability to tweet in general. Or something. So instead I sent some IMs to sep. Then I realised twitter wasn’t down anymore. The whole thing took roughly three minutes.

I couldn't sleep last night so I was up ninnying around with Avidemux and Gnome Subtitles. Linux video editing options are slim and not real reliabubble. I just Buffalaxed (mondegreen, soramimi, homophonically translated) the "Oh My God" song from ep. 2 of Winter Sonata (Anime Incarnation). No spoilers whatsoever, just me being lame and silly. Everybody dance! Kam sa hamida for watching.

Some links I shared on twitter in the last week.

Something else:

If you sat through the boring piece of something 2012, cleolinda’s parody recap almost makes it worth the nearly three hours you lost of your life.

The newest episode of Made Of Fail was recorded this weekend and should appear on their community page soon. It’s a great podcast and you should totally subscribe to it in iTunes. P.S. I appear in episode 21.

I was just at the library, and I could have sworn that someone wrote, "Love the Sinner, Hate the Sith," on the pavement outside.

But it was just that regular 'sin' version. The nefarious Dark Lord's grip on my college campus remains unquestioned.

Why did nobody tell me that they are squirting the kids with water on Modern Family? We have been doing that for years!
(I love Modern Family so much.)

But seriously, it seems like statistically Barney from HIMYM should have an STD by now. At least herpes.

Well, I now have a job lined up and a roommate moving in starting tonight. I also have three papers due next week. I'm a little bit stressed, and I'm not sure how to calm down. Besides cleaning and exercising that is. Deep breaths, self, deep breaths!

I also picked up Nano this year! Did anyone else? I'm like, four days behind D: For a while I just couldn't concentrate on anything, and I barely wrote. This cold weather just makes me want to curl up in bed and do nothing. Bah!

Anyway, could be so much worse. Dark Forces is keeping me sane. How are you folks?

On the tube today I was standing between seats, reading a book, minding my own business when the gentleman sitting in front of me looked up. The following exchange occurred:

Him: Would you like to sit?
Me: No thank you, I’m getting of at the next one so I’m fine.
Him: Sorry, I didn’t realise earlier.
Me: ….

He thought I was pregnant. I know my posture is a bit crap when I’m standing on the tube so my gut kinda gets pushed out a bit, but I’m starting to consider getting a t-shirt that says “Not pregnant – just snacks too much.”

Apparently, because a desperate and grief-stricken Rose absorbed the Time Vortex and saved the Doctor's life only for him to suck it out her & regenerate, that the remnant power of the Vortex has been slowly turning him mad, as we saw in Waters of Mars.

Okay! Sweet theory, must admit.

Oh, did I mention IT'S ALL ROSE'S FAULT? Cause she made him regenerate and she "selfishly" took the Vortex in her (because fuck, in her severely emotional state, she couldn't remember anything from Boom Town -- HOW DARE SHE HAS FEELINGS FOR HER BEST FRIEND/GIRLCRUSH ARRRGH) and if Rose was still around after Doomsday, she would have just fucked him up even more and egged him on to be a lonely god of emoness.

I LOOK FOR LOGIC; I FIND NONE. I FIND NOOOOOOONE. ;______;

FAN THEORY I JUST MADE UP GUYS REALLY: The Ninth Doctor takes the Vortex energy out of Rose to SAVE HER LIFE and accidentally sees everything, including the break of the time lock surrounding the War by the Master and the ~triumphant return~ of Gallifrey. When he regenerates, he forgets, but the closer he comes to the event horizon when everything will change (SUP "END OF TIME") his mind slowly turns against him to keep him from remembering. Thus, the madness and arrogance and Lonely God shtick we've been seeing, the constant reinforcing of I'M SO ALOOOOONE AND THE ONLY TIME LORD ;_____; ---- so he never remembers that Gallifrey is coming back, until it becomes impossible to hold back and that ---- swush. (Swush?)

Gallifrey comes back, the Time War is broken out of his lock, insert some crap with Daleks, and by the end the Doctor is no longer alone and also looks like that one chap from Party Animals. SWUSH! REGENERATE!

Yeah?

I went and saw A Christmas Carol yesterday.  My verdict: acceptable, but barely.  The biggest problem in it isn't the use of motion capture (certainly not in Jim Carrey's case, anyway) but that, partly through the use of an ever-moving camera, the audience is never really able to emotionally invest in the story.  Then again, now that I think about it, none of the versions of the story I've seen have ever managed to grab me in the way that I would like, so perhaps this is a fault of the original text.  Nevertheless, the filmmakers do try to make an emotional connection (it's especially admirable that they don't try to beat us over the head with sentimentality), and in one or two cases they do succeed: young Scrooge being told by his sister that he can come home, and Cratchit's reunion with his oldest daughter come to mind.

Other points of interest:

- Jim Carrey is easily the best thing about this movie, never once going over the top in any of the roles he plays.  Not all his acting decisions are good - I found his Ghost of Christmas Past unimpressive - but overall he is excellent, particularly as Scrooge and the Ghost of Christmas Present.  His work definitely demonstrates some of the vast potential of mocap to allow an actor to play multiple roles.

- While the sequence leading up to the appearance of Marley's ghost is definitely eerie, the demise of the Ghost of Christmas Present is downright horrifying, along with the portrayals of the children Ignorance and Want.  The two of them vividly demonstrate the consequences of Scrooge's words "Are there no prisons?  Are there no workhouses?" while the Ghost himself withers away into a gigantic skeleton, laughing merrily the whole time.  And this is a "PG" movie produced by Disney.

- With the exception of Jim Carrey (and possibly Colin Firth), everyone else in the movie seems to be phoning in their performances, which is a shame, given the people involved.

- This is quite possibly the first time Cary Elwes and Robin Wright have been in the same movie since The Princess Bride.

- Alan Silvestri's score is superb, integrating a number of familiar Christmas carols, none of which are anachronistic to the film's setting.

There's definitely enough evidence present in the movie that (mostly) everyone's hearts were in the right place, but a succession of bad decisions result in the final product being underwhelming.  "C".

Adventures in cooking: Asian style Nov. 14th, 2009 @ 07:47 pm

This was posted originally at my WordPress blog, here.

I’m not sure I’ve mentioned it, but I’ve been learning how to cook lately. It’s the natural reaction to everybody else having a job and me just sitting around the house, using the Tubertubes to hunt for a job: I have time to cook, nobody else does.

However, there’s a small problem: Bridget is a picky eater1. I made a pot pie at which she turned up her nose because it used lima beans and mushrooms–it was great, by the way, but of course I could not convince her of that. Her biggest sensitivity is mushrooms. Obviously, she never played enough Mario as a kid.

This weekend, however, she’s in Nacogdoches visiting her fiancé (he works for the county there). Therefore, back at the ranch, we’re having mushrooms all weekend, as it’s one ingredient I’ve been wanting to use for some time. Interestingly, my mom’s always wanted to have sake, but never had the chance.

Tonight, therefore, I did something a bit different than the usual fare. I made a beef stir fry and a hot and sour soup, and paired it with a sake from Spec’s2, both of which involved the use of Shiitake mushrooms. The soup also involved tofu, which is also different for the family, as we’re not big soy eaters (at least at home).

The meal went over very well, and for half of the calories that a similar meal would have run if we had dined out. As I remarked, the only regrettable part of it was that Bridget wouldn’t eat a bit of it (though I might have been able to sneak the stir fry past her if I didn’t say anything).

Tomorrow will be similarly themed, though the mushrooms will take a more central role. I’m doing a portabello mushroom sandwich and stuffed mushrooms, the latter will be served as an hors d’ oudrve at Thanksgiving3.

1. This wasn’t always so. I went to college as a fussy eater who would order plain damn near everything. Today, I’ll eat almost anything once, unless it’s incredibly greasy4 or otherwise unappetising.
2. Sadly, not the Spec’s, just the neighborhood Spec’s. Houstonians will know what I mean, but for those out of town, it’s the one liquor store in town that you know has what you’re looking for–at least the one on Smith is.
3. With some modifications: one of our guests keeps kosher, and though the sausage it calls for is a turkey sausage, she wouldn’t eat it due to the fact that it looks similar–it’s the same reason she wouldn’t eat cornbread during Passover. Thus, I’m using ground turkey instead. Also, I’m omitting the Parmesan cheese.
4. There are a number of restaurants that I haven’t visited since returning from college for this very reason.

A photo of me in Queenstown, with a statue of the (sadly extinct) giant moa -- the tallest bird that ever lived, this creature filled the niche of a giraffe in New Zealand. Although they was preyed upon by the giant Haast's eagle, the ten different species of moa - which ranged in size from that of a turkey to the giant moa's ten-foot height - weren't in trouble until the Maori arrived in New Zealand. They hunted the birds and their eggs, eventually to extinction. Starved of its traditional prey, the Haast's eagle also perished.

Greetings from Queenstown, South Island, NZ.  Absolutely beautiful views all around my hostel - reminds me of the time I was in Alberta, Canada.  The only thing that could spoil the perfection is that I seem to have left my iPod in the cab that delivered me from the airport.  Stay tuned for further updates.

ETA: My iPod has been found and will be delivered to me either tonight or tomorrow morning.

Nicholas Angel was vaguely surprised to find that the Swan was not only still standing, but open for business. During his time in hospital, as both patient and spectator, his mental picture of Sandford had somehow developed into one of a large, smoking crater, with decorative ironwork and flowerpots. But the door of the hotel was open, the lights were on, and pop music leaked quietly from somewhere.

He was dressed in a St John Ambulance sweatshirt and a borrowed pair of Cartwright's jeans, cuffed at the bottom. He smelled of hospital. He needed a shower to rid himself of his last shower.
