Then his little bed ended up under the lamp, because hey, he's fifteen years old so he's got to be comfortable while he's lounging around on the place where people, in theory, eat. Then somehow his food and water ended up up there too and now yeah, it's the cat's counter.

A few months ago a little basket of toy animals appeared at the end of Jack's counter. I don't know where it came from. My mom just retired from teaching and was cleaning out her classroom about that same time, so I guess they must have been hers. But Jack loves them. His favorites are the budgie, the snake and the iguana, which he'll fish out of the basket and bat around. All the rest he pretty much ignores, though he'll give one a slap or a bite if I take it out of the basket and show it to him. And he does not like help playing with them, as evidenced by his "I'll kill you in your sleep" look when I spent fifteen minutes trying to get a picture of him sleeping with his budgie on his head.

Noelle needed a playmate so I found one for her. Of course, they don't get along. But it's okay, Teyla's adorable. She's figuring out what she wants and funnily enough synchronize sleeps with Noe. She was 15 lbs when I got her and she's probably closer to 13 now. Noe's gaining weight since there's twice the food out, but I'll fix that during school break so they get fed twice a day in small amounts. She loves to sleep near my head, especially when it's cold outside. I loves her a lot.

She got the name Teyla because after 30+ names in 5 days, it's the only she replied to. When I adopted her, Tey's name was Bindy - probably because of her spot on her nose - but it so didn't fit. She's got some Siamese attitude in her, but it's just part of her charm. Plus she has her own pillow right beside my head that she sleeps on and looks out her window from. She has teeny legs. She came with a tower and the little seat up top is hers to stare at from.

Her owner died and some cousins took kitty in. And promptly left her in a back room for 3 months for the most part. So we're going through some trust issues. But she's warming up. She slept in my lap for 5 hours the other day. First time she's ever been in my lap.

She was hungry while I was in the kitchen. I'd been meaning to post this for ages and kept forgetting.

Jack also loves Stephen Colbert, apparently.

I'd been watching clips on Colbert Nation just before I took this picture. Jack vetoes any attempt to stop him sitting there. He's mostly good except for trying to catch the mouse cursor a few times, but I've never seen him so interested in something on the monitor. He tried to catch Stephen when he ran over to the interview desk, but then he sat right there and actually watched him. During a few of the close shots of Stephen's, he'd lean over and sniff his face or pat at him. Then Jack started talking to him, the little trills and chirps and "mow?"s he makes when he wants someone to shut up and pay attention to him. Jack is one of those cats that only likes attention when it's his idea, but when it's his idea then goddamnit, you are going to give it to him. So when that didn't make Stephen pet him, he tried rubbing his face on the corner of the monitor and purring, and then just ramming his head into the monitor and smacking it flat.

That was the part where I made him leave, but when I carried him over to the TV the night after during the Colbert Report, he kind of sniffed toward the TV set and bobbed his head the way he does when something he can't quite reach interests him. Stephen Colbert doesn't even look or sound like anyone I know, and the cat's never been that interested in him again. I really have no idea what that was about.

Also, this one is old and the quality is rather crap, but I love his little crooked tail.

Pomme being the sweeter and friendlier of the two, he was the natural choice for adoption. Bijou, while still a sweetheart, is much shyer, and a kitten that bounces up to you is much more likely to get adopted than a kitten who cringes and cries.

So I contacted a local nonprofit shelter and explained the situation; that I had an adorable kitten who was fixed, had all his shots, but for whom I simply could not find a home. I told them I would keep him until a home was found, he just needed some publicity. It took a little back and forth, but eventually they got what I was saying, and agreed to let me put him up for adoption through their organization.

I was warned repeatedly that it was unlikely he'd find anyone, it could be months before he was adopted, etc. etc. etc. I told them I understood, and that I was not interested in getting rid of the cat so much as I was making sure he went to someone who would love the little doofus as much as I did.

Pomme went out today for the first time, and less than two hours later, he was adopted. A lovely family of five saw him and fell in instant love. Adoption papers were signed, adoption fees were paid, and Pomme went home with them. I'm very happy, but it's also a little bittersweet--I had him for six months, bottle-feeding and socializing him, so he was in a very real way, my baby. Now he's someone else's baby, and I hope to hell they spoil him rotten, because he deserves it.

Ugh, I can never foster again. It's just too sad to say good-bye. But there are times that one must. :C Bye-bye, Pomme. Have a good life. I'll miss you.

(Please ease my pain! Share your own foster/adoption stories <3 It'll make me feel better about giving him up...?)

As some of you know, I worked at the Cat's Cradle back in college. It was a private nonprofit no kill shelter run by a really incredible woman, Gail Allen. She taught me a lot of things in my 2 years with her; through her, I learned determination, dedication and the nobility of sacrifice. I attribute a lot of my chronic volunteerism to her. She showed me the importance of serving a cause higher than yourself.

I just found out that Gail has lung cancer that has spread to various parts of her body. She is shutting down the shelter that she spent the last decade running. 150 cats need homes and soon. They are all spay/neutered and up to date on shots.

I don't know how up to date this website is, but most of this info should still be good: http://www.thecatscradle.net/

Gail is a phenomenal human being. She deserves all the help we can get for her. If you know anyone who might want a cat or might be able to take in just one more, please steer them towards the Cat's Cradle.

If I thought I could get away with sneaking a third cat into my apartment, I'd do it, but right now we're at the maximum amount of cat condoned by my lease agreement. If you know someone in Texas, particularly in the Houston/BCS/Navasota area (or who wouldn't mind the drive there), please let them know!

Also, I'm at work and lack pictures of my kitties, but have a video of Tonks the 'tard kitty chasing his tail. He's our possibly brain-damaged rescue cat--we took him in after a friend found him dazed and bleeding on the side of the road when he was maybe five or six weeks old. He's adorable, dumber than a pile of rocks, and we thought he was a girl for a month (because seriously, if your friend continues to call the cat "she" after it's been to the vet twice, you kinda don't feel the need to double-check, right?)

Edit: Aha! I do have access to pictures of both of my cats from here! Click here for pictures of Operation: Catbath!

So I got my DSLR earlier today in the mail and decided to snap a pic of my cat Noelle. All her really cute pics are on the external hard drive across the room. Too far to walk in my opinion so these will have to do.

Noelle, aka Miss Kitty, lounging outside my bathroom door. She was not happy about distrubing the hourly sleep time, but she'll get over it. When she walks, her tummy goes opposite time from her legs. Bless her heart. She's known as Crack Kitty, too. Mostly because she will run into a metal door and not even notice. She's not quite all there. Then again, she's mine so no surprise there.

Not that she's nosy or anything.

Never.

She's about three. I adopted her at six months from the Humane Society. She was named Noelle because that was the season I rescued her. Initially, Noe was supposed to be my dad's present but his wife didn't think so. I got her back and that was fine. I love the little brat with all my heart anyway.

The size of her teeny head compared to the big body.
Those aren't my own cats, mind you, I just catsit them a lot so that I can be a crazy cat person on the internet too.

It's worth it.

This is people!cat.

She likes all people. Even kids and toddlers. She's insane.

People!cat doesn't talk much, solely to complain about grievances and bad service.

Or to threaten Dignity!cat with bloody murder when she's being a pest. People!cat doesn't have much use for cats, really. She's a sitting-on-things-or-people cat.

She's not much of a player or fighter but everyone is wary of her claws. They are always well-sharpened and pointy and don't come with an opt-out function. Or P!cat hasn't found it yet.

This is Dignity!cat. She doesn't think much of people, with one exception.

Contrary to P!cat, she is talkative and feels it is important to keep everyone informed about the course of her moodswings. Those are some drastic, spirited moodswings.

She is also a bit of a coward and a bit of a bully, rolled into one.

She's a fan of sitting in things or even better, living upsidedown. Upsidedown people are hilarious.

She likes to play at full activity which can be scary because she can also be more prone to fumbling than your average cat.

I don't know their age, maybe three?

So about ten-ish years ago my family was adopted by this little moochy-arse brown Aby-mix tabby. She started out just being fed bulk kibble and sleeping in our porch, with dad's old down jacket in a milk crate her hangout.

Then one winter's day she zoomed into the house.

PWND.

Now we are Her People.

She has about a million damn nicknames, but she's most commonly called Mir. (Second most common nickname: 'get off of my pants.')

Loafenstien. Yes, that's my room. It's really orange. That blanket started out life as my ersatz yoga mat until she claimed it as her bitch.

Closer loaf! Note the 'what in the sam hill are you going' expression. You can sort of see her ear tufts in this picture, and her agouti-tabby colours. The digital camera is old, and also shit, alas. It doesn't do her colours justice. She may be just a doofy little brown cat but she's insanely pretty to me. XD

Sprawl! you can see a bit of her pattern here. She's got a classic mackerel-stripey tabby pattern under all the fluff and ticking. This led my aunt, who is like Teh Kity Guru, to declare her definitely-part-abyssinian. Her affinity for high places ('aaaagh vulture cat!') also lends weight to this hypothesis.

Sometimes, kitty camwhoring happens.

Sometimes she defies my efforts to take a good picture. She'd been sitting up like a Bastet icon until I hit the bloody shutter and then, suddenly, we had to wash furiously. Also featured: My wall scroll, and Yoga Blanket 2 - now also Kitty's Bitch.

Kitty stank eye. I woke her up for This Shit? Note the Adorable Pink Nose - it's much less so when she jams it into my ear in the wee hours of the morning.

I should take more pictures of her soon; these are all so old...

We have ten cats. Ten. Well, eleven if you count our missing cat. They range in age from weeks old to thirteen.

This is our first, now three year old Angel who I don't have any kitten pictures of. We got her from the ASPCA after our dog died young. She believes herself queen and hisses at you when she doesn't get her way. She'll also chew on your head to get you to pet her and makes caves out my blankets.

Our second and third cats are now two and a half year olds Ishi and Resses that were also ASPCA cats.

They're not so young now, however.

Resses is a wimp who spends 90% of her time outside. She's BFF with our dog Winston and also tracks down the cats if they spend too much time out and makes them come home.

Ishi is a thin, sickly, allergy ridden thing who loves everyone and everyone loves him. He just lets himself inside our neighbor's house and they don't mind at all. He's the most laid back and relaxed cat I have ever seen. Ishi likes to act more like a dog than cat which has him loving water, following you around outside if you go a walk, and coming when called. He also has an upside down heart on his face and that's awesome.

Our next cat was mah boy Ritsu who's almost two now. My mom's friend's mom found a pregnant stray and he was the first born.

He has turned out to be the smartest cat we have, as well as one of the biggest and a total camera hog. <s>Seriously. I could have made this post JUST about him with all the pictures I have.</s>

He taught himself to sit on command and is currently trying to master door knobs. When he does, I believe the revolution will begin. Also, as a kitten, he opened a bird cage on his own and sat inside it to watch the birds freak out. He's the main hunter out of the cats as well and is pretty damn good at it. He happens to be partially leash trained too.

The next cats we got were Ritsu's brother and sister who my family named Dusty and Ashes. Sadly, Ashes has been lost for about a month now and I can't seem to find the picture I have of her that we used for posters. But, she looks almost exactly like a mini Dusty, so just use your imagination.

Dusty is the exact definition of a 'Scaredy Cat' and is another cat who spend 90% outside. Ritsu likes to bully him, just like all big brother's do, but they'll sometimes team up to bother the others.

The next two cats we got were from my sister's work friend who couldn't take care of them anymore. They're both a lot more high strung than all the cats we raised.

This is two year old Taffy. She is pretty but bipolar. Happy and purring one second and then trying to claw your eyes out the next. She's calming down though. Slowly, but surely.

This is Dusty 2 who is about thirteen. His first owners got him from a shelter and he was so dirty they thought he was gray and black, hence the name. We're pretty sure he was badly abused. He hides all day, except at night, and runs away from all men. But he also runs from people if they get too close too quick. If you walk up slow he's generally ok. He has a really broken meow, too. It sounds like a bird chirping most of the time.

He's finally starting to warm up to me though. He doesn't like my mom though since she bugged him when we first got him and he was still uncomfortable. She tried to pet him while he was hiding and he bit her down to the muscle. He also sprays. A lot. D:

Our next cat is Zoey, who is almost a year old now. She belonged to our neighbors, but they couldn't afford to take care of her. And instead of taking her to the cheap vet places my mom told them about, they let her get pregnant on her first heat and then didn't take care of her properly which killed most of her kittens.

Being pregnant made her hate the world, but she's finally starting to chill out.

As for the kittens, two are ok. A boy and a girl. The boy has been named George, but the female is currently nameless.

They're a week and a half old now and I can't wait for them to grow up.

I apologize for all grammar/spelling errors and repeated words. It's currently almost four.

The Ballad of Frodo Cattins.

Sadly I have no kitten pics of my boy Frodo, thus named because when he was a kitten he was tiny and had BEEG eyes. (In retrospect, we probably should have named him Pippin, as he has an inordinate love for the 'nip and is dumber than a box of rocks.) His mom was a very sick stray that my cousin rescued, and she had just enough strength to give birth to five healthy kittens. Frodo was the runt of the litter and we just had to take him home. Roadtripping up I-95 from MD to NY with a kitten in your lap is pretty hilarious, BTW (he entertained several people at rest stops along the way).

Cat in a Box:

Beware the card shark:

(My mom is not actually drinking out of that vase, she just had to move it out of the way so I could take the photo. So explained because everyone I've shown this pic to WTFs at that. XD;)
