Worksafe, geek-interest blogs?
I work a customer service phone type job where I have some free-time in between calls. So I've taken to surfing some blogs during work, but I don't ..know that many interesting blogs? The Gawker circuit of blogs gets old pretty fast (though the American Apparel fail story has been entertaining) and most blogs I follow don't update often enough. You can only read news on BBC.co.uk for a certain period of time.

So I'm looking for any blogs that cater to geek interests (fandomy, comics, sci-fi, videogames, TV, any social justice on the side a big bonus) that are relatively high-traffic and with a multitude of contributers (preferably). Put it this way; like a mix of the three Gawker-network blogs I visit, Gawker, io9 and Jezebel, only without as much inane reality TV chatter (the cult of Speidi, Real Housewives and Jersey Shore makes me cringe).

The bosses aren't constantly spying on what sites we surf but the less I have moments where one of them comes over and I accidentally left some kink meme on livejournal open and hastily minimize the window, the better.. (I shouldn't have but was so bored I caved. Never again!)

http://www.busygamernews.com/ is run by a husband and wife team. They're my ex's former co-workers and the blog is spiffy.

If you can avoid getting totally sucked in, TVTropes is my go-to for surviving conference calls. And I go through spurts of getting really into Sociological Images and Women and Hollywood.

If you can do webcomics, I suggest checking out Archive Binge to find something you can get yourself caught up on.

Getting sucked in wouldn't be so bad! Will go through some old favourite fandom's TVTropes tomorrow..

Oh I love Sociological Images, haven't been there in a while. Didn't know about Women and Hollywood but sounds right up by alley.

I have done webcomics in the past but the only one I follow nowadays is Sinfest (despite its decline over the past year) but Archive Binge looks like a great resource, thanks.

Thank you so much for Archive Binge! Now I can finally catch up on OoTS, Sinfest and Dinosaur Comics.

Topless Robot is fun, and usually quite safe for work, despite the name. (Just stay far, far away from FanFiction Fridays.)

I'm rather fond of Bad Astronomy, though that's more sciency than geeky.

And if you subscribe to the Bad Astronomy feed, you also end up subscribed to ALL of Discover's geeky science blogs and most of them are really interesting.

These are video game specific, not general geekery, but Rock, Paper, Shotgun and Sexy Videogameland are two blogs I check regularly.

Also, maybe try Ars Technica?

Not quite sure this is what you want, since it's more images than text, but I really enjoy Cake Wrecks, There, I Fixed It, and Lovely Listing, all of which come sprinkled with plenty of geekery.

I know this isn't exactly what you asked for, but while MY work blocks blogs, WebComics are fair game! So that's what I use. I've been reading through:

Queen of Wands
Punch An' Pie (read QoW first!)
Girl Genius Online
Gunnerkrig Court
XKCD

And when I am, I religiously switch back to our database and ctrl+alt+delete every time I leave my comp...

Good luck with keeping yourself occupied!

It's not quite so techy, but I love, love, love Dooce. She does a lot of photography, and it's beautiful, and she usually posts at least twice a day. She's hilarious, too.

Her husband's blog is geekier, Blurbomat. I admit that I don't read it as much, and he's VERY Apple centered, but there you go!

Your interests mention HP, might I suggest Mark Reads Harry Potter?

There's also his blog about the Twilight series.

Have you tried TVTropes? That can pass the odd hour or two *round innocent eyes*
