Smarm
I recall reading a very funny mocking essay about smarm in the Sentinel fandom quite a few years ago. Now I want to send it to a friend of mine, but I haven't been able to find it. Anyone know what I'm talking about?

D'oh - I missed the part about smarm. Clearly it's not the one I was thinking of!

Heh. No, that's not it, but I recall loling at that one before.

The essay I'm thinking of wasn't about any one specific fic - it was a detailed description of the smarm phenomenon and how extreme it got, with examples from several fics. The only thing I remember about it is sadly ungoogleable - it's that the essay had a yellow background and some graphics... I think.

I actually read that story when it was being posted (though, like Lucy, I gave up at some point, for all the same reasons), and I loved a few other stories by the same author. But calling her work "smarm" was pushing the envelope before Beach, and Beach was just... dear god. NAKED MAKING OUT IN THE SHOWER IS NOT A PLATONIC ACTIVITY.

I...think I know one of the authors from the eighties, and...her definition of 'smarm' has expanded considerably. :D

I remember being 15, and smarm being all I'd ever wanted from fanfic, and reading "Beach" and saying "Wow. Just......wow. This is a bit much."

I did like her picture gallery, though.

YESSS. OK, so it was a pink background, not yellow.

Thank you. That just broke my brain again, in a very delicious way.

I actually think the old Symposium background may have been yellow--it definitely looks different than it did when it was still active.

And heeee. I'd completely forgotten about Beach and the whole insane smarm phenemenon in Sentinel fandom, so thank you for the reminder. Sometimes it's nice to remember that fandom has ALWAYS been batshit in one way or another.

That opening fic is horrid; I'm not sure I could take "Beach" without a drinking game.

My favorite part of the Sentinel smarm thing was when they started including some kind of soulbonding thing so that their entirely platonic naked caressing sessions could end with an entirely platonic climax.

...I read a Star Trek fic like that once. And by "fic" I mean "official tie-in novel", and by "like that" I mean "including gratuitous nudity and soulbonding in an officially platonic relationship". I'm not sure what this says, but I don't think it's good.

Oh dear gods that one.

The antagonist actually suggested to Spock that he kiss Jim to wake him up, fairy tale style.

I'm not sure how platonic I'd call that.

Wait, is that the one that was written by a person who wrote slash? Because that happened, and TPTB didn't realized that they'd published canon slash until after the book came out. The second printing took out most of the slashiness, but not all.

It doesn't look like it, but I did find the series! A random example of Jim and Blair's platonic love:

The sentinel snarled then nuzzled at his guide's throat, where the scent was the strongest. The linkage scent was thick and heavy around his guide. Blaer was in the heat of the bond, his needs made clear by the sub-vocal sounds he was making. The Dark Guide wanted to bond. The sentinel dropped to his knees, holding his most precious bundle in his arms, then lowered the guide onto his back, crying out in pain as Blaer fixed onto his throat, his teeth nipping the skin, the rest of the clan now forgotten.

But they're platonic needy sub-vocal sounds!

Oh Sentinel, you were my first taste of online fandom.

I ended up in this ML hosted by some woman that was a huge Voyager fan. Slash was forbidden on the ML after someone posted a story and people went apeshit. (hilarious, considering)

Then there were some chats that were orchestrated on AOL back when you had to have AOL to participate with some studio people, and when that was bought to light naturally light wank ensued.

Still I met some of the nicest fans from there and aways wondered whatever happened to them. /hazy watercolor meeeemories

(Also, iconpregnantelfBlair still haunts my brains)

Was it....oh MAN, I can't remember the name of the list I was on, but I remember one woman crossposting to a bunch of lists about a fic challenge she was running, with a list of prompts, and the list I was on FLIPPED THE FUCK OUT because some of the prompts were for slash.

Well, this is Sentinel. The first time I saw an episode (before I was into slash, even), I couldn't pay attention to the plot because I was so distracted trying to figure out whether they were actually supposed to be a couple. (I think this was the episode where they'd just moved in together...so yeah.)
