Zombies to infect the comic book worlds of GI Joe, Transformers, Star Trek and Ghostbusters
At NYCC 2010, IDW announced INFESTATION! Starting in January 2011, INFESTATION will infect STAR TREK, GHOSTBUSTERS, TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE comics with zombies, zombies, and more zombies. To help create this multi-dimensional saga, IDW is teaming up with fan-favorite writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning (The Thanos Imperative, Legion of Super-Heroes) and artist David Messina (TRUE BLOOD).

“This is definitely one of those ‘there’s no way they’ll ever do this’ kind of events,” said IDW’s Chief Creative Officer Chris Ryall. “But not only are we doing something fans never thought they’d see, we’re doing it in a way that should confound and exceed their expectations. And doing it with real pros like Abnett and Lanning just makes it that much sweeter, especially knowing what they’ve got planned as a follow-up to this event.”

Setting the stage for this massive event, Abnett and Lanning will pen INFESTATION #1, launching in January 2011. This initial 32-page story begins in IDW’s own ZOMBIES VS. ROBOTS universe, where something goes terribly wrong and ultimately infests the worlds of TRANSFORMERS, STAR TREK, G.I. JOE, and GHOSTBUSTERS with zombies and infected robots. From there, the story spins ferociously into each of the four properties throughout February and March, and culminates in April’s bombastic finale, INFESTATION #2.

...“We’ve found a way to involve all of these diverse titles in a massive storyline that has ties all the way back to the early days of IDW,” continued Ryall. “I think fans will be amazed by what we’ve pulled together here, as well as the stories that will come out of this once-in-my-lifetime event.”

Uh, guys, just because you can have zombies in your comics doesn't mean you should.

The stories that will come out of this "once-in-my-lifetime" event; stories such as IDW Zombies 2, IDW Zombies 3: Moneygeddon, and IDW Zombies 4: Undead Boogaloo. Thus you can enjoy this one-time (a year) opportunity to see zombies (which are overdone) in new settings (that don't really support them).

Seriously, what is it with zombies?

I. Am. So. Fucking. SICK. of. Zombies.

Will this godawful trend ever end?

Let's start the No More Zombies Goddammit club. (I, too, will be ecstatic when zombies become old meme.)

Zombies are the new vampires. Which were the new werewolves. Something else will come up soon, most likely.

I am too! I have this minor phobia of dead things that zombies trigger particularly badly. All this "zombies are great! Hooray! Look, look at the zombies!" for me is the equivalent of asking an arachnophobe to hold a tarantula because it's just so cool, and I cannot wait for it to stop.

I'm tired of Virus!zombies specifically. I don't think I've seen any Voodoo!zombies since "Serpent & the Rainbow" (and even that was drug-induced & not magic).

It's a once-in-a-lifetime event!! ... if you don't read fanfic, where I'm sure every permutation of this situation has already been covered, with multiple degrees of coherence.

(Must... not... start Googling...)

Dude, I love zombies (A LOT) but c'mon. THIS IS TOO MUCH.

I feel kind of dumb for writing a FFVIII zombie fic for spook_me now because zombies are just ALL OVER THE PLACE.

Zombies in Ghostbusters would be novel if the guys were completely nonplussed by it. "Oh no. Living dead who are going to bring about the end times. Gosh, we've never seen that before." Otherwise I don't see the point of introducing zombies to a universe where ghouls and stuff are fairly commonplace.

So... I'm getting the vibe here that zombies are finally passé -- at precisely the time the pros have really caught on to the craze. There is a part of me that wants to analyze this verbosely and in too much detail, but most of me is just going "FINALLY!"

Honestly, out of all of that "zombies in star trek" is the only one that even remotely catches my attention. It'll be interesting to see how proper zombies mesh with the clean-and-neat utopian future aesthetic, unless the star trek comics are very different than I expect them to be.
