Zombies to infect the comic book worlds of GI Joe, Transformers, Star Trek and Ghostbusters
At NYCC 2010, IDW announced INFESTATION! Starting in January 2011, INFESTATION will infect STAR TREK, GHOSTBUSTERS, TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE comics with zombies, zombies, and more zombies. To help create this multi-dimensional saga, IDW is teaming up with fan-favorite writers Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning (The Thanos Imperative, Legion of Super-Heroes) and artist David Messina (TRUE BLOOD).

“This is definitely one of those ‘there’s no way they’ll ever do this’ kind of events,” said IDW’s Chief Creative Officer Chris Ryall. “But not only are we doing something fans never thought they’d see, we’re doing it in a way that should confound and exceed their expectations. And doing it with real pros like Abnett and Lanning just makes it that much sweeter, especially knowing what they’ve got planned as a follow-up to this event.”

Setting the stage for this massive event, Abnett and Lanning will pen INFESTATION #1, launching in January 2011. This initial 32-page story begins in IDW’s own ZOMBIES VS. ROBOTS universe, where something goes terribly wrong and ultimately infests the worlds of TRANSFORMERS, STAR TREK, G.I. JOE, and GHOSTBUSTERS with zombies and infected robots. From there, the story spins ferociously into each of the four properties throughout February and March, and culminates in April’s bombastic finale, INFESTATION #2.

...“We’ve found a way to involve all of these diverse titles in a massive storyline that has ties all the way back to the early days of IDW,” continued Ryall. “I think fans will be amazed by what we’ve pulled together here, as well as the stories that will come out of this once-in-my-lifetime event.”

Let's start the No More Zombies Goddammit club. (I, too, will be ecstatic when zombies become old meme.)

Zombies are the new vampires. Which were the new werewolves. Something else will come up soon, most likely.

At least fewer people want to shtup zombies?
...
I hope.

Umm. Well, if you read BRPS, being a member of the shambling undead doesn't always stop other people from wanting sexy times...

Hence the 'fewer'.

I just hope that not as many people got the horn for rotten shambling corpses as for mysterious broody but at least intact corpses.
It's the little things that give me faith in humanity.

...actually, thank you! I've been trying to find that webcomic again for ages, but I couldn't remember any detail about it except "hardcore fantasy comic".

IDK, vampires have always been in season, at least since I've been alive. Bela Lugosi, then Frank Langella's nummy Dracula (fuck this abstinence and "watching you sleep is romantic" noise, how is it that vamps could be unabashedly sexual in 1979 but not in 2010?), then Anne Rice, and well, you get the picture.

I get tired of them sometimes too, but it's not the same kind of annoying trend IMO. The one where someone says "and then there are zombies!" and it's treated like Plot Awesomeizer 2000, just add them to a tepid plot and everyone loves it! At least vampire fiction seems to be about vampires, and not Moby Dick! With Vampires! unless I've missed it.

"how is it that vamps could be unabashedly sexual in 1979 but not in 2010? "

I have this very weird theory that it's due to anti-muslim sentiment, as Dracula drove out the Turks from his neck of the woods back when he was plain old Vlad Tepes, so now the conservative movement has gotten all Enemy Mine over it.

The theory is of course, completely ridiculous, but sometimes I wonder...

I am too! I have this minor phobia of dead things that zombies trigger particularly badly. All this "zombies are great! Hooray! Look, look at the zombies!" for me is the equivalent of asking an arachnophobe to hold a tarantula because it's just so cool, and I cannot wait for it to stop.

Cannibalism has been a thought that drives me crazy for some time now. Creatures wandering around eating brains? No thanks. If I think about it for too long I will have nightmares.

If they did something else with zombies I might be interested, but this, not really.

What's weird is that I can stand many types of gore in movies, but brains is one of the types I draw the line at. Which causes much confusion and not getting it from my family, because obviously if you like one gory movie you like them all. *facepalm*

Oy, like my friend who tried to convince me that if I didn't mind the gore in Silent Hill I couldn't say I didn't want to watch Dexter.

I never did watch Dexter, but as I understand it they're really not very similar.

I'm really sensitive to gory violence and people in pain, so the scene those damn movies always have where someone gets eaten alive, even just thinking about them, always make me feel the need to go do something else very quickly. And I just find the concept of the world ending in this awful, violent way where it's pretty much inevitable that you're going to die horribly really upsetting.

The "Thriller" video is about all the zombie I can take, and even that has parts I know to skip past quick when I get in the mood to watch it.

I'm tired of Virus!zombies specifically. I don't think I've seen any Voodoo!zombies since "Serpent & the Rainbow" (and even that was drug-induced & not magic).

Voodoo zombies will probably not be seen for a while because racist overtones ruined it.

Voodoo!zombies are a huge reason why I'm sick of all these pop culture zombies lately. It always makes me sad and irritated when I think that a) there were some version of for-real zombies at some point and it seems pretty tragic and b) my anecdotal evidence suggests that people who are into Virus!zombies don't know that Voodoo!zombies even existed.
