"The Lion King" to return to theaters in 3-D

It's only for a two-week stint starting September 16th, but YAY I AM EXCITE. The movie is also being released on Blu-Ray 3D, normal Blu-Ray, and DVD on October 4th, along with a trilogy package containing all three movies on Blu-Ray.

Actually, if anything, 3D works best with animation, so it shouldn't be too bad.

Except for those of us who can't see 3D animation and only get a nasty headache, which makes such rereleases just depressing.

As with all 3D releases, I'm sure there'll also be a 2D version as well. :/

With new releases, definitely, but with recent 3D re-releases, not so much. I guess the logic is that since the film isn't new, people won't bother seeing 2D since it doesn't add anything they didn't already see the first time around.

I'd love for there to be a 2D re-release, but I'm not hopeful.

I wonder if they could just make a pair of 2d glasses* for folks with problems seeing 3d films?

* I think current move 3-D works by using polarization -- the glasses screen out one sense of polarization so your left and right eyes see differently. So if they put two 'left' or 'right' eye lenses in a set of glasses, it would screen out the blur from the film but not produce the 3d effect.

Granted, it's still more expensive, but might be good for those folks who are in a crowd who all want to see the movie 3d except them.

Yeah, someone has.

Which doesn't get rid of the price problem or the simple annoyance of it, but it's something. *is legally blind in one eye, doesn't want to buy special glasses just for the few times a year they go to the movies*

::nods:: Mostly I'd like to think theaters should have them on request. I mean, if you're paying extra to see a movie with friends/family, you shouldn't have to get an eyestrain headache from it.

Yeh. My sister had her right eye removed a few years back, and for some reason we seem to get many 3D-only releases (or many cases where the 2d release will open 2 or 3 weeks later, and her friends want to see the movie on opening night). Granted, when we bring this up to the ticket lady she usually gives her a discount, but she's still pretty self-conscious about her prosthetic, and all in all it's been more of a deterrent to going to the theater than an attraction. Personally I don't like the effect and price, either, so I can't wait until the fad is over.

Yeah, except I hate 3-D and the glasses don't fit right over my own.

I've never seen the Lion King so this could be a good opportunity.

(Though I have to join the crowd who would rather see it in 2-D. 3-D doesn't actually bother me, and I saw Up that way, but I don't particularly enjoy it.)

I honestly think that 3-D only works for films that were both animated *and* intended to be viewed in 3-D, and Pixar is really the only studio that I've seen do it well, with a very subtle hand so that it adds depth and realism without detracting or seeming gimmicky.

(I also liked the 3-D re-release of The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Coraline in 3-D, but those are both cases of being literally 3-D animation, and I don't watch Coraline in 3-D at home.)

Ooooh. I wanna see...in 2D. I seriously don't like 3-D. It gives me a headache with those glasses. And it did 20 years ago when I saw some movie at SeaWorld concerning sea life. And at the Muppet theater at MGM Studios in Disney World.

I just wanna see it on the big screen as an adult since I was a kid when it was out originally. I wanna see Scar get his due, damn it.
