Anne Perry writes some excellent Victorian murder mysteries, especially the Thomas Pitt series. The earlier books are better than the later ones, but they're all pretty cracking reads.

And the added interest factor is that Ms Perry is herself a murderer. If you've ever seen the Peter Jackson film Heavenly Creatures, she was played (then known as Juliet Hulme) by Kate Winslet in her first acting role.
