Fandom Lounge, I need your help!
Starting the most unspeakably, abysmally BORING new job in the history of the world (call centre sales) seems to have kick-started my ability to write fan fiction: I've written five fics in under a month. The problem is, having mostly lurked on the fringes of fandom I have no idea of where to post them. So, I turn to you guys: where are the best places in Harry Potter, James Bond, Disney, Doctor Whoniverse, DC/Sandman and Marvel movieverse fandoms to post fic on LJ and Dreamwidth? The fic in question is gen, mostly female-character focused, if that makes any difference.

And just for fun: what are you guys working on right now and/or plotting for NaNoWriMo? Yesterday I finished a fic about Professor McGonagall from Harry Potter taking tea with Judi Dench's M from James Bond, and I've just got started on one about Time Lady!Mary Poppins. I'm also researching and plotting out my NaNo, which is going to be an update of the 'Five Find-Outers' books by Enid Blyton with the kids as adults in the 1950s.

Post excerpts if you feel like it! I'd love to find some new authors to read.

I'm assuming you know about Archive of Our Own (currently down for maintenance) and fanfiction.net already, but I'll mention them just in case. :)

I'm not sure where's a good place to post/promote fanfiction of LJ or DW. I'm pretty curious about that myself. Unfortunately, the fanfiction I'm currently writing involves original characters set in the world of an obscure roleplaying game (7th Sea).

But if no one minds the blatant plug, here's where my current work can be found. :)

The only places I've really seen fic for Doctor Who on LJ is in ship-specific communities, unfortunately. A few people will post at http://doctorwho.livejournal.com/, but it doesn't seem to be very well received.

Outside of LJ and apart from ff.net, you might want to check out A Teaspoon and an Open Mind.

If you search relevant interests in LJ/DW, you can sometimes find communities on those topics. I know there are Marvel fanfic communities out there, since a friend of mine writes some (also movieverse, as far as I've seen) and shares it via LJ. At least in terms of Marvel, I can try and find out from her which ones would be best suited for your fic. In general, though, I'd just suggest searching for interests (such as characters in the fic, or just the name of the work) and looking at the most active communities that are returned by the search to see if people do post fic to them.

I've been working so much that I've barely gotten anything done in the last month, but my most recent projects have been a script for a Star Trek spin-off and a fairly epic Dragon Age fic (co-written by my friend mentioned above). None of this exists online yet, unfortunately. If you want a new author to read, though, my friend is sakuratsukikage on LJ and she's excellent. She writes in a ton of fandoms, with Marvel, Doctor Who, and DC among them.

I've mostly fallen out of fanfic these days, but I just wanted to say that "Professor McGonagall from Harry Potter taking tea with Judi Dench's M from James Bond" sounds excellent and you should feel good.

'Five Find-Outers' books by Enid Blyton with the kids as adults in the 1950s.

Are those the Famous Five books? Because I read the hell out of the Famous Five and the Secret Seven when I was younger.

I'm working on two things: a fic for the Blizzard fanfiction contest and something that's come up after spending too long reviewing Twilight of the Aspects. The former is coming along, but I need to get it done soon so it can be appropriately beta read and the latter needs to be beta read too, but it doesn't have a deadline.

As for excerpts...

Fic 1: Not Enough Minutes

It was not that Thrall had passed on the mantle of Warchief. No king lived forever. It was who Thrall had given it to. It was that Thrall had ignored Cairne's warnings -- the story of what Garrosh had done during his departure from Northrend was chilling, both from the sole survivor who had lived through the chill temperatures of the Frozen Sea and from Baine, who had told Jaina his father's story -- and that he had not once consulted his allies. It was that Thrall had agonized over Varian's declaration after the Battle of Undercity, then trusted Garrosh -- someone who actively called for the blood of humans to be spilled -- to repair the fragile peace between the Horde and the Alliance.

Your judgement was better once, Thrall, Jaina thought bitterly. What happened to you?

Fic 2: Shedding One's Skin

(From description, he's talking to Darion Mograine)

"Do you… know me?"

"Yes." The human turned, and began to walk. Thrall hurried after him.

"Did I know you?"

"Yes."

"WIll you tell me who you are?"

"No." The human stopped, and gave Thrall a stare that froze him to the bone. "I didn't want you here. We don't need someone like you."

Those words felt familiar to Thrall and he frowned. "You hate me because I'm an orc, but--"

"Let's get something clear," the human snarled, and one finger stabbed him in the chest, and it felt like ice. "That's not the reason I hate you. If you can't be bothered to remember, if you can't be bothered to hold onto the precious memories you have, then you can just go the hell back to Nagrand, you--"

I find the NewbieGuide community on LJ can be a good place to start whenever I go into a new fandom; they have fandom pages which list all sorts of different LJ comms and websites. Some of the links will be out of date, mind you, but there's a lot of links to comms to choose from, so you should be able to find something.

Here's their HP page: http://newbieguide.livejournal.com/1327.html

And their masterlist of fandoms: http://newbieguide.livejournal.com/6259.html That has Marvel and DC listed, but not James Bond, sadly.

Also, if you want to search LJ by interests, you can go here: http://www.livejournal.com/interests.bml It's also a quick way to find comms in new fandoms.

I'm not really involved in any of those fandoms, so I can't help you there.

Right now I'm mainly working on some Golden Sun fics (first two games only; Dark Dawn? What Dark Dawn?), as well as plotting a rather weird My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic idea. For NaNo, I have an idea, but I'm forcing myself not to think about it, lest I get bored with it before I start writing.

If you're writing fic about the older ladies of Harry Potter, you might try hp_oldladysb. It's a small community though. (The "sb" stands for Smut Brigade but you don't have to write smut.)

As for me, I just sent an original off to the beta. Here's an excerpt. (I found a mistake in it too... I don't know what the beta is going to do to this...)

Helen wasn't sure Augusta was talking to her, but she shook her head anyway. "I thought she was just sick today," she said. But they didn't call in sick too often; the bosses could report you to the Bureau for that.

"Wouldn't she have told you?" Augusta persisted. "I thought she was your friend."

"I know her," said Helen, carefully keeping her eyes on the molten metal. Didn't these women know any better than to talk?

OMG, there's a McGonagall comm? SO HAPPY TO KNOW THIS.

The M-McG fic is gen, alas, this time (although I did write Peggy Carter-youngMcG that was possibly slashy if you squinted; I would totally ship it, anyway), but it's here if you want to check it out. The rest of my writing is here and includes a couple of other McGonagall-centric fics as well.

I'll second Archive of Our Own. Its tag system solves your category problem tidiily.

Excerpt from a giant CSI/SPN crossover that's taking forever to finish:

Getting the key to the room had been surprisingly easy. There was already a hotel attendant by the door when they arrived and the plan to break into the room was immediately scrapped.

"Thank you for your help, Ms. Sidle," said Dean putting his fake badge away.

She smiled and nodded at them. "Anything I can do to help the LVPD. You said you were CSI?"

"'course," said Dean. "Been on the force oh, six years now."

Sam started poking around the room, and Ms. Sidle looked a bit startled. "Shouldn't you use gloves before you touch anything?"

"Well, uh. It's already been gone over. It's fine, miss. Now, why don't you tell me about your thoughts on what happened here?" Dean put on his most charming smile.

Ms. Sidle kept giving Sam the hairy eyeball. "My thoughts? Well, someone was obviously murdered here."

Re: AO3, is it for anyone to join or is there a codes system or anything? I don't know that much about it.

Oh, btw, Sep, I meant to say - I don't know if you remember us chatting on F_W about my fuzzkitty and his much-scratched nose, but I have achieved victory and he's now allowed to stay in at nights! He goes out for about an hour and then he's let back in again, and I have made him a bed out of a cardboard box and a big blanket so that he can snooze in the bathroom. ^_^

I want to read that McGonagall and M fic like, last week.

I second the rec for A Teaspoon and an Open Mind and it's LJ rec-comm Calufrax. There's also dwfiction an LJ and DW based Doctor Who fic comm which welcomes all pairings and genres. (Also heavily affiliated with Teaspoon. Apparently Teaspoon's the Borg of DW fanfic which is fine by me. The quality is a shade higher than what you'd find on fanfic.net.)

As for NaNo, urgh, I wrote a ten chapter magnum opus for Doctor Who called Turn Your Back and I think I'll repeat its format (ten short chapters making one short novel's worth of original fic) for NaNo. I actually have time and energy this year! Will I finally finish something?!
