Wanted: Sherlock S02E01 Thoughts
Edit 7: I think this matter was a big enough issue since Stephen Moffat himself addressed it. Was/Is there similar controversy for Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows? (I have no more energy to trawl through the SH movies fandom.)

When I found out what happened to Irene Adler in Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows, I point-blank refused to watch the movie/am still not watching it, irregardless that I had been looking forward to it since last last year.

Let's just say that (currently, most probably because of above movie) I can't help but feel touchy about how this particular SH character is portrayed these days or what happens to said character. Even reminding myself that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle may have killed her off in the books is not helping.

So, my question is to people who already saw Sherlock S02E01. In your opinion, is the character treated okay-ish? I've already spoiled myself over at Wikipedia and TVTropes, and the early reviews seem to indicate characterization was done well though there are already complaints about how the character was butchered.

Advisory: Comments most likely will contain spoilers.

Edit 1: Have found out that Steven Moffat (and others) are trying to kill the Ho Yay with Irene Adler. My brain is currently broken.

Edit 2: Have finally seen S02E01.

Edit 3: Okay.

Edit 4: Sherlock writer Steven Moffat furious with sexist claim

Edit 5: Found this piece of awesome. Now happy.

Edit 6:

"@JonathanAngwin And that Sherlock is played for a fool thoughout the episode and has to be TOLD what's going on by his big brother."

"@Meunda Ah, we shall agree to differ. Cos if needing rescued makes you a damsel, I'm one too. And Sherlock certainly is. Twice in that show."

I guess this means that Irene/Sherlock is canon.

I kind of split it into two categories: Irene the character and how Irene is treated in the narrative. I love Irene the character. Mad for her. It's the narrative that's problematic. She doesn't get to win, she needs rescuing. That all sucks. It definitely bothered me. But a) I adored her so much that I was willing to accept stuff that might have otherwise been a deal breaker, and b) my expectations were lowered after A Game of Shadows. I was so overjoyed that she didn't die that I cared far less that she needed rescuing than I would have otherwise.

Honestly, I think that the BBC writers have treated Irene better than they've treated their other female characters. However, that's not saying much, as they're treatment of female characters has been crap. It was ridiculous how relieved I was to see Molly be something slightly more than a walking punchline in this episode. Low expectations, that's how they get me. Low expectations.

My expectations became non-existent after I learnt about Irene's death in AGOS. Had BBC also stuffed her in the freezer, I wouldn't give S02E01 a chance.

(so very tired of female characters being killed off for the sake of drama)

Personally, I was delighted. I am so very tired of writers translating 'adventuress' to mean 'thief'. This one is certainly closer to the original than the hundred and one professional criminals I've seen.

Also Mrs. Hudson being a badass. Points there.

Mrs Hudson made the entire episode for me.

Atm, I think I may have over-reacted to how Irene needing to be rescued. I have just realized that I didn't mind at all when she was pretending to be a damsel in distress. Just the ending bugs me.

This is problematic, because of spoilers - I knew she was just pretending at first, so maybe that's why I wasn't bothered. Had I not spoiled myself, I would have thought her really already a damsel in distress much earlier in the episode, but now I've no way of knowing how I would have actually reacted to her having to sneak into 221B for shelter.
