Fast Company reports Russian Overlords want rest of LJ to be more like ONTD; wank ensues
Fast Company publishes an article titled The Return of LiveJournal. This should be good news. It isn't.

According to LiveJournal general manager Anjelika Petrochenko, LiveJournal's planning a major 2012 push based around attracting new users to community sites. Petrochenko told Fast Company that the blogging service was planning between 10-50 new community sites by the end of 2012. These new community sites will offer organizers and admins highly detailed metrics and statistics on user activity that appear to be more detailed than Facebook. Petrochenko also stressed that LiveJournal accounts do not have to be tied to a real name/identity and offered greater anonymity than other social networks. However, LiveJournal has been involved in numerous censorship controversies in the past.

Oh No They Didn't will be the first community site to participate in LiveJournal's initiative. The company designed custom widgets to highlight frequent commenters, instituted new metric tracking and analysis systems, and created a new, community-driven interface seemingly designed to deemphasize blog content. The next LiveJournal-hosted site to get a makeover will be the popular AnythingDisney fan site. LiveJournal is staking their continued American growth on the community model; Oh No They Didn't's Brenden Delzer was hired as an on-staff community editor by LiveJournal several months ago.

The formatting of Oh No They Didn't--which includes advertising and a commenting-heavy interface--is close to what LiveJournal has planned for other communities.
...
LiveJournal recently unveiled a complete redesign that overhauled the service's comments system, emphasized social networking, and set the stage for the upcoming communities blitz. Reaction from longtime users has been overwhelmingly negative--LiveJournal patrons slammed the redesign on the service's official blog.

LiveJournal's leadership has made it clear that their future American business strategy lies in generating new traffic rather than catering to the service's current small-but-loyal membership. The challenge for Petrochenko and other executives at LiveJournal will be redefining the brand's identity in a crowded media marketplace.

The entire article was posted over at ontd_political here. The response has been 150+ comments of DO NOT WANT!

'their future American business strategy lies in generating new traffic rather than catering to the service's current small-but-loyal membership.'

Because screwing over a dedicated customer base in order to attract fresh, non-loyal users always works out so well.

"Because screwing over a dedicated customer base in order to attract fresh, non-loyal users always works out so well."

I've seen this in action before. At least a decade ago, Drum Corps International decided to stop catering to what it called "legacy fans"--people who had marched in drum and bugle corps and their parents--and instead get more marching band people involved. The wank was massive. I should know. I was one of the chief wankers.

As for how it worked out, Drum Corps International got its new fan base and the legacy fans went to Drum Corps Associates. There are fewer units competing in DCI and more competing in DCA.

It's times like these when you really have to wonder if they figure "Well we've screwed them over plenty in the past and they're still here! Surely this just proves they'll stay no matter what!" or if they really are just that dense.

This is really depressing news for me, due to all the friend I might lose because they may not be willing or able to transfer to other sites. I already knew it would happen, since it was already happening, but still.

At least some of the fandom people may go to Dreamwidth, and I'm hoping to stay in touch with at least a couple of people I'm really close to, but... I hate to say this but a lot of my emotional support, not to mention fandom fun and support, will be gone when people abandon LJ.

I was having a lousy day already, too... [/TMI] [/Zuko icon]

I liked LJ because it was different from everything else out there, and easy to use, so of course they have to get rid of all that. They really don't get that it is their stupidity that has been driving the American customer base away do they? Even when users speak loud and clear about how unhappy they are they get ignored. This is really going to backfire on them, because a lot of people join LJ on recommendations from other people, and now those people are going to tell others to go somewhere else. I know I'll be telling others to stay away.

Maybe people from my fandoms will finally move to DW...

JOY. Spreading the word to my modest little list of readers.

My primary posting these days is from my Wordpress blogs, and I'm mirroring out to both LJ AND DW, but a lot of my primary reading these days for LJ-like content is indeed on DW. I has a sad, though. I miss the cozy LJ of the early 2000's, definitely.

The company designed custom widgets to highlight frequent commenters

You know, one of the things I really liked about LJ when I started up was that you didn't have the post counts and titles that a lot of forums show next to comments. I was always stressed about commenting in response to people when you could see that I had many less posts than them, or when they had some kind of ~kooky~ in-jokey title that made it seem like they belonged there and I didn't.

The reason I haven't moved to DW fully is because I can't get Loudtwitter to post my Tweets to DW and LJ does it easily.

I have to be honest, I'm guessing the reason they're doing this is because livejournal's 'legacy users' simply aren't paying the bills. ONTD is massively popular and brings in money; of course they're going to see it as a potential revenue stream.

Of course, the bills are high because people invested in livejournal thinking it had more potential profit than it ever did. It's not facebook. It's not twitter. It's a moderately successful blogging platform with community elements that does what it does well enough to attract a small but loyal base of users. If they change it those users will migrate to the other blogging platforms that offer the same service, and maybe if they're lucky new users will replace them.

I just find it hard to get mad at them any more. As a commercial venture livejournal is failing and they're desperately trying to do something about it.

the only reason I even use LJ anymore is because the egl community is based completely in it: the main comm, local comms, the sales comm; everything. I've wanted to leave LJ for years, and the new layout has prompted me to start up a dreamwidth, but egl shows no sign of moving.

This is late, but I found the link possibly explaining why the comment design in LJ update 88 causes eyestrain. It boils down to "way too much whitespace":
http://forwish.livejournal.com/23014.html

There's also the text that appears and disappears on hover-over, and the "loading" spinny thing. The latter causes me nausea as soon as I see it, so I have to close my eyes whenever I hit "expand". For comparison: emily_goddess above me has an animated icon of a kitty encircling a rainbow background. As a test, I stared at it for about thirty seconds. No problems.

There are probably other things in the update that cause physical problems to users as well, and many people are saying their screen-readers can't handle it.
