Davy Jones of The Monkees dies aged 65

Davy Jones, Manchester-born lead singer with 60s band The Monkees, has died aged 65, his publicist has confirmed.

He died in his sleep at his home in Florida. His publicist, Deborah Robicheau, said he had a massive heart attack.

The band, who included musicians Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith and Peter Tork, were famous for hits including Daydream Believer and I'm a Believer.

The Monkees were an American pop band, assembled in 1966.

Early on in his showbusiness career Jones appeared as Ena Sharples's grandson in ITV soap Coronation Street.

I saw this on Tumblr of all places, thought "this has to be a joke" so I went to my headlines feed.... and there it was.

I'm in shock. The Monkees was my first fandom. The first time I interacted with other fans and wrote fanfiction and stuff. I even remember seeing three of the four in concert and how impressed I was with Davy's on-stage antics.

Goodness. Somehow he's not the one I expected to go first (morbidly, I figured it'd be Michael Nesmith that would go first, just because of all the stuff he's been planning to do and hasn't done yet and all...)

I'm rambling now.

Group hug? :(

An odd out-of-left-field (but related) thought: wouldn't it be an exquisite irony should Paul McCartney wind up as the Last Beatle Standing?

I'm very curious to wonder if/when Ringo dies, will "Rolling Stone" give him a cover like they did with George and John? (I'm expecting Paul to get a cover when he dies)

Mine too! Back then I couldn't wait to watch the show and all the little girls in my neighborhood would talk about who was the cutest. Davy always won that poll! And remember when he guest starred on The Brady Bunch? Dang, this is so sad.

When I was in college in the '80s I was going through this awful depression. And I told myself "At least try watching something funny on television."

As it happens there was a Monkees marathon on. I barely knew who they were but I tuned in anyway and I think that was a big factor in how I kept going right then.

A couple of years later I got to see the live at a reunion tour. (Without Michael, but definitely with Davy!) Weird Al opened. Man, that was a great show.

RIP Davy. You will be sorely missed.

I just heard. I'm still baffled. Davy Jones always looked so young and healthy.

I've been just gutted all day. The Monkees have been such a huge part of my life and I'd gotten used to having the comfort of them all being alive and well (useful thing for a Beatles and Who fan). But I guess nothing lasts forever.

Between a baby throat infection, this and the massive lay-offs at Blizzard that've caught a few friends... this is a shitty day ;_;

I'm so sorry. All of that sounds awful. (((hugs if they're wanted)))

I found out about Davy Jones's death right after my mom told me she was laid off today (and I'm not sure if I'll be able to pay the rest of my school year off or if she can come to my graduation). And I was really looking forward to February 29...

My mom called me about this yesterday afternoon. I was so saddened. I had the most huge crush on him when I was a little girl.
