New Doctor Who companion announced
SPOILERS AHOY!

Today Jenna-Louise Coleman was announced as the new companion for the next series of Doctor Who, taking over for Amy and Rory. She'll show up first in the Christmas special this year and starts filming next weekend.

The official Doctor Who twitter account also gave more info on how Amy and Rory will depart. I predict this will be the wankier of the info revealed today...

So: thoughts? Speculation? (I'm assuming there will also be spoilers in the comments so be aware.)

Since one of the rumours going around is Coleman's character is potentially non-human, maybe she's a regeneration of Jenny? (especially since Moffat isn't revealing her character's name)

It is one of my dearest wishes that the new companion is either alien or from another time period. Preferably the latter, but I just want more of the "time" part of "time and space" adventures. I live in the 21st century, I'd like to see something else!

I hadn't heard about the Jenny thing, but it could be interesting to have her as a companion. The Doctor's "daughter" and his "wife" going on adventures! One big happy sort-of-family.

And nothing says "Christmas episode" like an awkward family reunion!

I remember reading a couple years ago (maybe it was when I still dared to read TWOP) somewhere that Moff had asked about keeping Jenny alive at the end of "Doctor's Daughter" -- and then promptly forgot he made such a request.

It's a loose plot point I wish someone would get back to. I just don't know if I trust Moff to do it right if that's the case.

Why would he ask to keep her alive? That was when RTD was still show-running, right?

Yep. I know I read it somewhere, but I don't know how true it was.

I think you are correct.

"There was a moment I remember when they were auditioning together … and they both look frightened doing a Doctor Who scene, and it was an instant poster and I thought 'God that's brilliant'," Moffat said.

Definitely a better reason for casting a companion than that ghastly story about him being attracted to Karen Gillan's legs.

I agree, although I've already seen people (well, one person) snipe about how she's pretty so obviously he's just thinking with his dick.

She's pretty, but I feel like New Who has had too many female companions. I really hate to say it, but I'd like to see a man play the role for a bit. Maybe it'll be surprising and good, but for the most part this announcement just bores me.

MTE.

Nothing new so far, although I'd be interested if she's an alien or something.

Given that neither sci-fi nor prime time telly is exactly awash with lead roles for women I'm really not keen to see one of the few good roles that women do consistantly get handed over to Yet Another Dude just yet. There are quite a lot of male-dominated shows out there without DW joining the ranks.

Fair enough. Still, three of four female companions have had some sexual tension with the Doctor, and it's getting boring, insulting, and heterosexist. I'm not excited about seeing another woman either constantly being rescued by the doctor or endlessly flirting with him.

Agreed on that point. I'd like to see a bit of variety by getting a different flavour of woman companion for sure. Might not be likely, but I guess it's still possible that this one might be gay/an alien/historical or ring the changes in somehow.

This. This is why Donna was my favorite, because she was the only not treated as a potential love interest. Even with Amy they kept hinting and teasing that possibility.

Yeah, the Amy thing really bugged me. Like, okay, the first time she was talking about who we thought was the Doctor but then it turned out to be Rory was amusing, but doing it more than once was just obnoxious.

Also, I will never forgive the Doctor for lying to and killing the awesome Amy who built her own sonic screwdriver and lived for what, 20 years, in a place that was trying to kill her nonstop.

That episode went straight into DisContinuity for me. (Whenever the Doctor's a little bit too much of a dick, I just pretend it didn't happen. Thank god DW is so episodic.)

That episode hits so many of my rage buttons. First you have the title, "The Girl Who Waited". Not the woman or lady, girl. Which has some negative connotations in my book about not being an equal adult on par with Eleven and Rory (the men who end up making the heavy decisions in this episode, of course *eye roll*).

Then you have this older!Amy who is strong, resourceful and JUSTIFIABLY PISSED OFF at Eleven. Save her younger self and everything she's suffered and learned and become is irrelevant. And the most important lesson she's learned is that the Doctor can FAIL. Even then, I could have accepted the Noble Sacrifice trope with older!Amy finally stepping aside for her younger self. Hell, what I REALLY wanted to see was younger!Amy making the choice to "kill" her older self and leave her behind. THAT would have been a gut punch.

But Moffat's heavy hand wouldn't even give either Amy ANY level of autonomy or equality in the decision. Younger!Amy is conveniently rendered unconscious so she never sees what happens or has any say in the matter and older!Amy gets fridged while Eleven (and Rory) stays the hero who always succeeds in younger!Amy's eyes. Like most of her tenure, Amy is just a plot macguffin and a prop. Which angers me, because I like Karen's performance and wish she had better scripts that were more respectful to her character.

I didn't really see it as killing older!Amy. It's not great and I understand why some people don't like it, but to me it makes a huge amount more sense to rescue younger!Amy, change the past, and keep her from having to have all that suffering than to say to her, "no, we're making you go through all that, bye".

Well, she's old, you know. And fat. We can't have a Potential Love Interest that couldn't pass for a supermodel, can we?

Yeah, I agree with both of you. While I'm tired of the "woman from the 21st century who flirts and fawns all over the Doctor" type of companion, it's still nice to have a show where a female co-lead is pretty much a given. Most of the other shows I watch are focused on the bromance (Sherlock, Merlin, etc.) and it's fun but I don't want to lose the ladies we do have.

Yeah, but that'd mean that the main cast would be all male, and I don't see anyone involved in making the show doing that.

Unless the Doctor regenerates as a woman (...unlikely), there's always going to be at least main female lead. I think there's been maybe 2 episodes in the entire run of the show, old and new, without at least one female companion (or sort of companion in those specials).

I really wanted to be wrong and the new companion be another white woman but somehow I knew that was a false hope. Is it really that hard to have a second non-white companion for the Doctor? I would really hate for Martha to end up being the token companion.

Well, there was Mickey too, but it's still a pretty dismal ratio.

My dearest hope would be for one or more of the kids from The Sarah Jane Adventures wind up as companions. Clyde had wonderful chemistry with both Ten and Eleven!

OMG - I totally forgot about that and I JUST watched the episode last night where they were the only ones left on Earth except for the one alien kid. Then again, the Judoon didn't get wind when Clyde body-swapped with Eleven and I don't think the Doctor is on the Judoon's friendslist after The Stolen Earth.

Chiwy! :D LOVE HIM.

(I love the Cucumberpatch, but I am virulently against anything, ANYTHING, that could stop him playing Sherlock and Martin Crieff. So I am anti-Benny for Twelve.)

I want to see Tilda Swinton play the Doctor, too.
