A Willow cartoon?
Concept art from the Willow cartoon that never was.

George Lucas and Ron Howard's 1988 fantasy film Willow might have had a happy ending, but the followup novel, Chronicles of the Shadow Moon, outlined by Lucas and adapted by Chris Claremont, wiped out all those warm fuzzy feelings in one giant cataclysm. It didn't have to be that way, however. In fact, Willow, Elora Danan, Madmartigan and Sorsha could have had a second, much happier life in a Saturday morning cartoon. While little evidence of this failed animation project remains, some of the concept art still exists.

Collector Joe Frese recently shared this trove of concept art with io9. He purchased the pieces in a series of auctions in 2006, and while auction house Howard Lowery certified them as authentic concept pieces for a Willow TV show, Frese received no information about the animation house. He suspects that Nelvana may have been involved in the project, as they produced two other Lucas cartoons, the Star Wars-spinoffs Droids and Ewoks.

Oh, that would have been wonderful!

I was horrified when I found out what was in the book sequel. Oh my goodness.

I actually liked the ensuing books, so... it's a good fanfic idea, I suppose.

You made it that far? I read a chapter or so into it and went "wait, what?!" and then started over. Read through again and went "no fucking way" and spot read further into the book to see if that was just a joke. Then I never finished further than That Scene.

Yeah, me too. I was on a roadtrip with hardly anything else left to read, and I still didn't get more than a chapter or two in before giving up in disgust.

What scene? I know about the books but I never read them.

The "let's kill everyone off randomly and incompetently cause that's so much fun!" scene.

Looks like fan art to me. Especially since that second dragon seems to be modeled from the cover art of McCaffrey's The White Dragon or one of her Pern novels anyway.
