You don't. You roll your eyes and get on with your reread of the hunger games.

At least all the comments seem to be calling them out on it?

Honestly, I read books for entertainment. To have fun. Sure, giant man children with chain swords aren't something likely to be on my reading list at school, but I have fun reading it. That goes for anything you read. Have fun reading it.

You say FUCK YOU

Obviously this asshat hasn't ever read a single J or YA book. Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to see if my library has the Abarat books in I want to do a reread.

"A children's story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children's story in the slightest" (C. S. Lewis).

That's what you say, as a commenter over there did.

I say, "Oh, it's Joel Stein" and save myself the trouble of reading the article. Seriously, he's one of the reasons I even look at bylines before reading articles now, because I'd get halfway through one of his TIME Magazine op-eds, think "What asshattery is this?" then look at the byline and realize I'd made the mistake of trying to read one of his columns AGAIN. So now I check the byline before reading and save myself the time and trouble.

The guy is conflating Harry Potter with picture books. There's no point even arguing with that. You may as well just pity him for being a uselessly judgy twerp and move on, no matter how Wrong On The Internet he's being.

I love it when people who don't take the time to read a book most people can finish in a day or two talk like they're experts on the matter. I'm definitely going to take your opinion seriously, Mr. Shitty Journalist!

The Donkey Kong reference was grand, though.

Feh. So, it's okay for me to read Beowulf, Stardust, The Graveyard Book, Lord of the Flies, Treasure Island, Un Lun Dun, The Book Thief, Howl's Moving Castle, the Narnia books, Ender's Game, Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, and The Hobbit (among many, many others) if I buy the editions that are marketed towards adults, but if I buy the editions shelved in the middle grades/YA sections I'm an intellectual plebian. Who knew a larger print, wider margins and (usually) lower price point would have such an impact? I pity the readers who were forced to read the MG/YA version because their local bookstore or library was out of the adult version, as well as anyone who just picked an interesting book up off a display and failed to rigorously research where it's normally shelved.

(Also, Joel Stein should spend less time judging and more time trying new things, but I believe people above have already covered that point.)

I say two things. First, to quote C.S. Lewis:

Critics who treat adult as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence.

Second, someone on one of the librarian email lists posted a beautiful response to this article. You can read it if you like.

Hahaha, sigh. I had this discussion with my mom, who was dead serious; my rebuttal was to ask why I'd want to read a book full of rape, murder and nightmare fuel (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was on the table) when I could read about adventures, dragons, saving the world, etc.

My friend and I just spent like a half hour doing a deep analysis of Katniss and the theme of powerlessness in the Hunger Games, so this douchebag can kiss my ass about YA not having literature hooks.

And the Hunger Games can still be read in less than a day, so this guy is a foolish fool for talking at all without having read it.
