Middle school friendly anime books/comics?
I need your help!

My school libraian came to me looking for comic/anime to buy. (in a hurry. Apparently they were told they didn't spend their budget and they need to spend it immediately!) I am not into anime, but I thought I'd put it to you for suggestions.

She told me they have all the big names: Bleach, Naruto, Full Metal Alchemist (those were the ones I recognized.) She said that anything that doesn't have nudity or cursing (or VERY little) is fine.

Middle school is ages 12-14 here.

Thanks!

ETA: Thanks guys! You rock! I've compiled your suggestions and sent them to her! (it's the end of the day here and she has to buy them tomorrow!)

Shoujo maybe? Skip Beat, Vampire Knights, Tsubasa Chronicles, Princess Tutu, Fruits Basket, Imadoki! and The Wallflower come to mind.

I'd second the recommendation for Princess Tutu. Also, what about the new release of Sailor Moon? They're doing a much better job on the translation than the old Mixx comics stuff. And... hmm, it's been a really long time so I can't remember just how suggestive Read or Die was, as I mostly remember the plotline (which involves someone so obsessed about books that she has superpowers, a plot element that tends to rivet librarians) and a lot of breasts. Clothed ones, I mean. Also it's really girlslashy, which is novel. I'd imagine it would be a borderline case either way.

If you're also looking for regular comics, I might add that I have heard literally nothing but good about the Marvel Adventure line, and have a couple trades earmarked for the next time I have free cash. Apparently everyone who just wants to tell fun stories about superheroes has snuck off over there and left the regular Marvel line to stew in its own epic crossover events.

Seconding Marvel Adventures! All of the titles but Spider-Man and Super Heroes have been canned, so the full series can be bought rather than having to deal with an ongoing, which is both good and very sad.

Also, Eric Shanower and Skottie Young's graphic novel adaptations of the Oz books are really good, and keep to the storytelling and events of the original books.

Thirding Marvel Adventures, which truly are (were) wonderful for all ages.

Not to bust in but do you have a particular title you'd like to recommend from that? I'd like to read a superhero comic now and then. I don't have a lot of money, but I wouldn't mind checking one of these out.

I liked what I saw of the Avengers (with Spider-Man, Giant Girl, etc) posted to scans_daily, and also any of the Power Pack stuff with Gurihiru on art.

Read Or Die has a great story, but the massive boobage is pretty massive. The new translation of Sailor Moon is so! much! better! i can't even.

I was so excited when I heard they were rereleasing them--I'd just finished the live action and the only fansub I could find only went up to issue... twelve? Something like that. And I knew from reading it years ago that I loved the plot but that a lot of the translation was... iffy. Now all I have to do it find some free cash. (I had planned to get at least the first few this month, but then Half-Price Books had almost all of the Lucifer run in trades. So much for that money.)

Ouran High School Host Club, Natsume's Book of Friends, Ghost Hunt ... I read Blue Exorcist scanlated so I couldn't vouch for how much cursing is in it, but otherwise I recommend it.

Genshiken would probably cross the line not because it's graphic but for some fairly blunt conversation. TBH most 14 year olds have heard far worse. It's about an anime/manga/general fannishness club at a university.

Train Man (or Densha Otoko) is good... there are multiple adaptations of the original novel; there is a movie, a ten-part TV miniseries, and multiple manga versions. They all tell the story of a lonely geek who's never had a girlfriend taking the train home one night and standing up to an old drunk guy who was harassing the women on the train. Some of the women ask for his address so they could send thank-you gifts. He goes to an online forum and asks the others what they think... it's a really sweet and awkward love story.

Oh! I know! Yakitate!! Japan! It's a sweet and hilarious series about a kid determined to create a bread that would truly embody the spirit of Japan. He means it, too. There are cooking battles and flavor-induced dream sequences.

Maybe Chi's Sweet Home (see icon), it's the cutest thing ever, it's the everyday life of a tiny kitten and the family that takes her in. There's a bit of a plot, but it takes a backseat to just Chi being a kitten and doing kitten things.

Also? I know it's not anime or manga, but if her school's students have a sizable Jericho following it could be worth ordering the comics. They can be hard to find in stores so being able to borrow them would probably be a hit.

I was going to reccomend Venus Versus Virus but it does contain violence and some creepy moments. It's about two girls who must fight off creatures call viruses which can take over human bodies.

Record of a Fallen Vampire is quite good with several strong female characters and some great and unexpected plot twists.

Tomoko Taniguchi's work is intended for younger readers and quite good if fluffy.

And Yuu Watase is worth looking into. I didn't like Fushigi Yuugi but I've felt her later series were much better.
