Funny Or Die: David Copperfield vs. Harry Potter
David Copperfield claims that Harry Potter was based on him.

ETA: I can spell "Copperfield". God. My brain is mush tonight!

Tell me, is that a Monty Python reference there?

("No, no, Dickens wrote David Copperfield with two 'P's, this is David Coperfield with one 'P,' also by Edmund Wells."

It took me a while to realize that I'd made that stupid typo. LOL

I feel like that one guy in the Spanish Inquisition sketch: "I'll just go out and come back in again.".

What about G-R-A-T-E Expectations, also by Edmund Wells?

In that case we don't have it. We don't have anything by Edmund Wells, actually; he's not very popular.

What about Olsen's Standard Book of British Birds?

Look, I'm not interested in any of this. I just want to return this parrot.

Sometimes it's hard to tell with people. Some of the comments on that vid are... unusual, to say the least.

I know, I know: Rule Number One: Never Read The Comments. *sigh*

Wait... didn't we know this already?

(Okay, not specifically David Copperfield, but Harry Potter is within that English literature tradition of boys who are over-the-top abused and have strange adventures and grow up and live happily ever after.)

Ah... not sure David Copperfield was abused. Strange adventures? Maybe. LOL

PS. Yeah, we know HP isn't an original story. I still thought the vid was funny, though.

Sure it's original. It just also fits within a broader tradition and is inspired by it.

I'm not sure what a story that wasn't similar to other previous stories would look like. Crappy, probably.

I just await the wank that will surely ensue if The Books of Magic movie ever escapes Development Hell. (For those not familiar with that title, here's a hint as to why the wank)

Nice link, but I wonder (after reading the summary of Tim's life/the whole run) if Harry spends quite so much time screwing up in (slight variations of) the exact same way?
(oh, and now his magic's gone FOREVER again no wait it isn't psych.)

Whether it's the nature of comics (in which stories are rarely allowed to genuinely end), the people writing him, or the very concept, this character doesn't seem to have an arc so much as an endless tail-eating cycle.

This was, for me, initially a strike against the series. "Christ, not another one."
