I'm pretty sure some of us JFers were wondering if this was going to happen.
Fifty Shades of Grey fanfic published as original erotic novel

It's official. We've hit Fanfiception on this particular piece of wankery.

ETA: And then the author of the fanfic-of-a-fanfic got spooked and pulled all mentions and promotions for it off the net.

Does this mean we still have to go deeper? Because I'd be okay if we stopped now.

I have been hoping this would happen since I heard about Fifty Shades of Grey being published. If this goes through the wank will be epic.

Wow. I'm actually having to draw, like, circles and flowcharts on paper to work this out.

So, Fifty Shades of Grey was a Twilight fanfic, serial numbers filed off and published.

Then someone wrote a fanfic of 50SoG, filed the serial numbers off of THAT, and published it, then got cold feet and tried to hide all evidence of said publishing.

Have I got that about right?

Because yeah, we could have a few more rounds of this 'ception and really get confused! :O

It actually took me a few minutes to realize this wasn't just a very delayed reaction to the publication of Fifty Shades of Gray. It was like I couldn't quite process the fact that someone had written fanfic of fanfic, much less gotten it published as well.

To be fair, it's self-published, so it's not as though there was some big publisher out there wanting to jump on the Fifty Shades bandwagon. So the fanfiception isn't quite perfect, but still.

Me too. My first thought was "This is news?" and then I clicked the link.

I suppose it was inevitable. Though, seriously, why didn't these women use public-domain fairy tales a la Ann Rice? THEY'RE ALL WRITING THE SAME BOOK.

It's kind of a shame it was pulled so fast. It actually sounds like it might be rather better than 50 Shades of Grey. If it hadn't appeared as fanfic first it would slot right in amongst the other knockoffs.

(in fact, part of me wonders if someone /has/ snapped it up, which is why it's been pulled, but as FSoG showed us, the internet will still know it was fanfic first)

I concur. It would almost have to be better than 50 Shades of Grey.

And really, there's nothing wrong with starting as fanfic. I think it's less than brilliant to put your fanfic on the internet first if you plan to turn it into for-profit fic, but that's all.

What gets me about both Fifty Shades of Grey and Devil's Brand is that apparently in both cases, the only changes that were made were a find-and-replace on the names. I'm like...really? You didn't feel self-conscious enough to go back and maybe smooth out some (or all) of the rough spots? Because I have a one-shot fic that I'm thinking of originalizing as a short story and technically all I need to do is some find-and-replace-fu (hell, I probably wouldn't even need to do that much, the characters are all OCs from before the main canon and at least one of the named places is of mythical origin so it's in the public domain), but there are certain clunky parts that I would be horrified to let out into the wild now without any modifications.

I can sort of see it with 50 Shades because it is *nothing* like Twilight. The character of Christian Grey is totally different from Edward except that they're both assholes. Ana is kind of like Bella-but-older in that she's pathetic, but her voice is very different from Bella's. Bella never talks about her "inner goddess", and Ana doesn't seem to hate literally everything with the passion of 10,000 suns.

But from an editing perspective -- well, Twilight looks to me like literally the only editing was done with a spellchecker and maybe a little with a grammar checker. Nothing else. So it's not just fanfic authors who do it, and it's not just Meyer who does it among published authors. In fact, pushing out books without editing seems to be a great way to make a lot of money. Urgh.

There seems to be something attractive, to a certain market, of the pure and earnest "I stuck a spigot in my id and this is what came out" approach. Consider also, on the other side of the aisle, the equally infamous and admittedly self-indulgent Paladin of Shadows series (the books that gave us "OH JOHN RINGO NO").

You are waiting for a train. You don't know where this train will take you, but it doesn't matter. How can it not matter?

Because the only way this freight train can end up is off the rails, upside down, in a ditch and on fire. And I cannot fucking wait to see it.

Fanfic idea . . . Stephenie Meyer hires the gang from Inception to break into Casea Major's dreams and give her the idea to publish 50 Shades fanfic.

I seem to have developed a nosebleed. That's normal, right?

Anyway, 50 Shades? Fake!Morgan Freeman is having none of it!
