Hopefully, this doesn't cause too much of a disruption, and I know this is probably a subject that most anime fen have covered a thousand times over...

...but what, exactly, defines shoujo and shounen? How can you tell if an anime or manga has been written for a male audience as opposed to a female audience?

As a newbie (five or so series) groping around anime fandoms, I'm somewhat curious. Is it based more on the small details (as argued by Dom in Megatokyo's rant space), or more on the plot and art style?
