Wow...

Remember the case about Nick Gill, the Australian convicted of textual underage porn (not even images), that has the Harry Potter slash fandom in an uproar? Well he showed up in the Metafilter thread about the case, to give his side of what happened.

Read Here.

How *did* they find that stuff on his PC, anyway? Because if he was storing email pr0n at work, that's... kind of dumb.

I'm wondering if it has soemthing to do with being the only gay man in his town, and possible resentment thereof, plus the loaning of use of his computer, or something. It seems the most likely thing to me.

...I'm sorry, but all I want to do is start singing "The Only Gay Eskimo"

"I'm the only gay aussie/in my town..."

I can relate to that, actually. I'm bi and not out and Australian and a fangirl (and there aren't any of those - fangirls - I know of around here). But that made me giggle a bit anyway ;)

I'm not going to assume he's telling the truth (or that he's lying), but ... wow. That's totally fucked up.

You know, the other day I was reading Silence of the Lambs and I thought to myself, "Wow, that would go great with a nice chianti."

It's always so delightful to find laws that would classify you and a whole lot of people you know as sex offenders!

Though I am amused to see Insomnia_lj, he of the absolutely insane claims that women cannot be abused in a BDSM context because if a man wants something, it's proof that they want it too, is in there singing the praises of NAMBLA.

Yeah. In the thread he claims something like he has a friend that writes slash, but only because she was abused as a child. It was so completely wtf, I don't think anyone bothered to enlighten him what an asshat he came off as.

I'm hoping he appeals that decision. It's unconstitutional - the parliament cannot pass laws that discriminate against a certain group of people. Except, given that the High Court are remarkably conservative...yeah. This is just ... fucked up.

What did Insomnia_lj do, and do you have a link?

The whole BDSM insanity is chronicled here.

The NAMBLA apologist comment is here, and just for added fun, the "it's sexual abuse that makes people like yaoi!" comment.

I remember that wank. Jeez, not surprised it's the same guy. Although I think the point was more towards child abuse making people like shota stuff.

But I didn't know that these things were illegal in Australia

Really? Because *I* did and I'm NOT an Australian.

I live in Northern Ireland, and as astonishing number of people at my school didn't realise the age of consent here is 17 (it's 16 in the rest of the UK). Not saying I either believe or disbelieve him, but it's not completely inconceivable he didn't know that law.

I'm not saying he's lying. I was just calling him stupid. A lot of people don't know the laws of their own country. I'm in the US and people here are astoundingly blind to what is and is not legal. I generally make it my business to know what my rights are.
