I wonder if it would even make any difference. Is a person's difficulty with spelling the fault of the words?

Also, the page that pulls up for me also has an advertisement for Larry King Live featuring an interview with President and Laura Bush. The jokes write themselves, don't they?

Interesting (or perhaps not so interesting ... you decide) fact: Noah Webster was fighting the same fight in the 18th century. He was the one primarily responsible for Americanizing British spellings, like dropping the "u" from "colour," and so on. His reason, however, was to make the English language more American, since it was a new country and wanted its own identity away from Britain. I think he also proposed the dropping of "a" from words like "head" and "dead."

Here's my question. Who decides what's phonetic? I mean, one of my parents pronounces garage /ga-RAJ/ and the other pronounces it to rhyme with carriage (/GER-ej/). Will Boston news papers have to drop r's? Should aunt be spelled like ant? Can American English speakers here the difference between the voiced and unvoiced 'th' sound, or the s in sleep versus the s in beds (one is more of a /z/). So, who's right? At this point, I don't think English is spoken consistently, let alone spelled consistently.

Then we run into the issue of dialects. Which is correct, roof or ruf?

Also, crappy spelling getting official recognition always makes me feel like pimping fysche, my personal bugaboo. She's published by a vanity press but has been heralded by a couple decent people as imaginative and boundary-pushing. I call her a hack. :D

Mark twain had a great parody of simplified spelling:

For example, in Year 1 that useless letter "c" would be dropped to be replased either by "k" or "s", and likewise "x" would no longer be part of the alphabet. The only kase in which "c" would be retained would be the "ch" formation, which will be dealt with later. Year 2 might reform "w" spelling, so that "which" and "one" would take the same konsonant, wile Year 3 might well abolish "y" replasing it with "i" and Iear 4 might fiks the "g/j" anomali wonse and for all.

Jenerally, then, the improvement would kontinue iear bai iear with Iear 5 doing awai with useless double konsonants, and Iears 6-12 or so modifaiing vowlz and the rimeining voist and unvoist konsonants. Bai Iear 15 or sou, it wud fainali bi posibl tu meik ius ov thi ridandant letez "c", "y" and "x" -- bai now jast a memori in the maindz ov ould doderez -- tu riplais "ch", "sh", and "th" rispektivli.

Fainali, xen, aafte sam 20 iers ov orxogrefkl riform, wi wud hev a lojikl, kohirnt speling in ius xrewawt xe Ingliy-spiking werld.

ZOMPIST.COM has this really awesome article I've been referring to for about five or six years now regarding English spelling. (It has some really good linguistic articles in general, including one about "writing English like Chinese" which is enlightening, but actually a bit off because Chinese doesn't actually use pictures for words like is assumed, according to Alpha Beta - How Our Alphabet Shaped the Western World by John Man)

Hou tu pranounse Inglish "The purpose of this page is to describe those rules-- to explain the system behind English spelling, the rules that tell you how to pronounce a written word correctly over 85% of the time."
