Things I think about
So I saw this icon on LJ and wondered: "Why has there never been a Female Black Power Ranger?

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

And on that same note, a guy I know at my school made a very interesting observation the other day: "There's the Red Power Ranger, the Blue Power Ranger, the Yellow Power Ranger, the Black Power Ranger, the Green Power Ranger, the Pink Power Ranger . . . and the White Ranger."

OH GOD SO MUCH ICON LOVE.

I would say because there's never been a female Black Ranger in Sentai, but that didn't stop Saban from making the Yellow Ranger a woman. I'm really not sure. I'd like to see a female Black Ranger, or even better, a female Red. OR BOTH. (Then I would want femslash.)

It'd be nice to see a Red who isn't the brash, young member of the team. Or maybe that's just the ones I watch.

It's not just you. I'd kill to see a calm Red, too. Plenty of love for brash young ones here, but it gets a little tiring.

Dai and Bouken both have level-headed reds, I know. Dai's got effects that would make MTV of the 80s cry, but the cast is fairly solid.

Really? I never managed to find more than one episode of Dai, and Bouken's promo pictures were a little out there, even for me. (Construction equipment?!) Is Bouken good?

I'm so-so on Bouken. I'll eventually see it all, I know, but Blade just held me attention more at the time. I am certainly no fan of the bots this time around, but the characterization would be much worse, frankly.

TV-N has Dai 1-10, and I'd strongly suggest it. I do feel it's overhyped as some kind of miracle series, but it's still worth seeing.

There WAS a female Red in SPD, but unfortunately she was evil and only appeared in two episodes :( She also had no Sentai counterpart and the American producers apparently had to push to put her in the show. But the producers think/hope it might lead to a full-time female Red in future. Rumour has it they were going to gender-bend Kabuto Raiger/Crimson Thunder Ranger in Ninja Storm, but it never happened.

I'd love to see a female Red and a male Pink, myself, but the pink ones do tend to look and act very effeminate in the Sentai footage, so that'd be harder to pull off than the usual male Yellow gender-bending.

"There's the Red Power Ranger, the Blue Power Ranger, the Yellow Power Ranger, the Black Power Ranger, the Green Power Ranger, the Pink Power Ranger . . . and the White Ranger."

I had to read that sentence about six times before I figured out what was missing. :) I don't watch the show, and never have, so can you tell me - is this how they're actually referred to on the show? I understand why, but it seems a little silly given the context.

They skip the Power part, aka Red Ranger and Blue Ranger. Which gets weird because all series use it, so crossovers get odd.

Well, harder to understand who's being referred to sometimes. It's always odd. XD

Mmm, I think they've been reffered to by the full Color and Power Ranger title here and there over the years, but the White Ranger has always been the White Ranger. No power.

Come to think of it, its also the least used Ranger color.

I think there may be a reason they don't have "power" following "white" there, if you follow me.

...I just kind of wonder why they use white and black as colors. I mean, it's not like they were running out, they still had orange, indigo, and violet. Then they could have been the Rainbow Rangers!

*Snort* That might cause controversy and the day Saban does something that might be controversial is the day Satan starts ice skating to work

There's never been a purple-colored ranger, but there was an orange one in one of the Sentai series- Battle Cossack in Battle Fever J.

Take a look at some of the early Sentai series. They (and other early Toku series) are pretty cracktastic and I have a massive fangasm every time I find episodes to watch.

The very first was Himitsu Sentai Goranger, which aired from 1975-1977: http://incolor.inetnebr.com/stuart/goranger/
Then was JAKQ Dengekitai: http://incolor.inetnebr.com/stuart/jakq/
And afterwards Battle Fever J: http://incolor.inetnebr.com/stuart/bfj/

But if you want something really mind-blowing? Toei made a Spider-man series in Japanese in 1978 where he fought monsters, who then were made huge, so he fought them again IN A HUGE FUCKING ROBOT. Here's a link to YouTube clips- somebody also uploaded the entire first episode with satirical fansubs.

It's lovely and jubbly. (less than three) Most 70's/80's tokusatsu is in that vein. I think all of it involves robots in some fashion, either with the hero(es) piloting a giant one, or in series like Kamen Rider the hero being transformed into one.
