I left the fandom but I will always be a Slayers nerd.
I knew there was a reason I keep going to ANN besides watching for wank.

Toykopop wasn't planning on releasing anymore Slayers novels after volume 6 but my nerdy prayers were answered and they will be releasing volumes 7 and 8 exclusively on the Tokyopop.com website. I want these to sell well because I want all 15. The novels make the anime suck.

I screamed like an idiot when I found out that novels 7 and 8 were to be released. Though, I want to see 9-15 be released as well - especially since knowledge about a certain sword upgrade will be very helpful to my fanfic. ^_^ Plus, my Japanese isn't strong enough to throughly translate the novels I have.

Slayers is one of the few series where I felt that the anime could hold its own with the novels. Except chunks of Try (aka the character assassination of Gourry, Amelia and Zel.) The one-shot Araizumi manga and Slayers: Knight of Aqualord are also all sorts of win. I'd love to see a decent English translation of Aqualord.

I was giddy all day when I found out they were releasing 7 and 8. The news shocked me. I would love 9-15 to be released too so I can finally forget about TRY. Hated it. I'm not holding my breath for Auqalord but anything can happen.

TRY was a good story - just not a good Slayers story. Aqualord was the way TRY should had been handled. They handled the introduction of the new character well and it was still Lina's story, not anyone else's. I've been doing a fanfic rewrite of TRY by setting it after Aqualord to see what changes and what doesn't. It's been fun looking at it from that POV.

Of course, considering your Trogdor icon, TRY did cause some great AMVs like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j9lezQ2A2ak

I know what happens in 9-15 and I own the 15th novel in Japanese, but I can only make out random phrases. I'm hoping as I keep studying, it'll become somewhat easier.

I believe TRY could have been a good story (It was a lot like the plot of Final Fantasy VII. Everytime I see a picture of Val, Sephiroth's theme song starts in my head.) but the writers failed and they had to add tons of filler. The biggest reason I could not take TRY seriously in the first place was the fact that some guy was trying to destroy the world and no one cared enough to do anything. "I don't want the world destroyed... but we have a staring contest with the Mazoku tonight. You do it." "Well, I can't leave my waitress job to help save the world. You do it." "The prophecy said that humans have to do it so you have to do it and we're not even going to help you at all. Oh and fix our temple, it has to look great just in case the world gets destroyed." Yeah... The character rape was another huge reason. I always hated what they did to Luna. My friends posted some scans of Aqualord and even raw I could tell that it was written much better than TRY.

Wow, the AMV was the only good thing I saw come from TRY! That was cool.

Aqualord was just awesome. If you're a big Xelloss and Zelgadiss fan though, neither of them are in it - just Lina, Gourry, Amelia and then the two new characters that are introduced. But, unlike TRY which depended so much on that prophecy, Lina clearly bungles her own way into this one, dragging Gourry and later Amelia along with her. It's got a lot of the same feeling as NEXT, even though there's a huge secondary plot surrounding Lyos, the Knight of Aqualord. I first saw scans as well (wonder if it's from the same friends?), but then imported the books myself.

As for Luna, it took me a bit, but I actually got why she told Filia to go after Lina. Luna's the Knight of Ceiphied, but she doesn't do magic. She's an expert swordsman (she bisected a dragon with a kitchen knife), but there's already one of those in the form of Gourry. It would had gotten way too crowded, even though Aqualord does balance the fact that there are two swordsmen in the party pretty well (Lyos doesn't have control of his powers and it's established early on that he has no hope of attaining Gourry's skill). I remember that one from the novels and the Kanzaka interviews I've read. I think Luna realized it would take someone with an enormous magical capacity to handle the fusion of white and black magic and the first person that springs to mind is Lina. But, I agree that if she'd been so worried about things, she should had done something herself.

Well, that's the thing. The world is ending, give the Chosen Ones some help. Give them money, weapons, or an army of trolls. Just something.

I really hated Luna's protrayal in TRY because it was assumed that Luna must be abusive to have Lian nearly pissing her pants at just her name. Everytime Luna showed up fanfiction, the first thing she would do is beat the shit out of Lina. For no reason, sometimes she would even say, "You deserved it, Lina." It distrubed me. When I used to read Slayers fanfiction, I nicknamed Luna "Robo-Bitch".

Yeah, I hate that portrayal of her. I think she would threaten (one of the Kanzaka interviews says a likely homecoming would be Lina walking into the kitchen to see Luna sharpening a kitchen knife), but I don't think Luna has or would ever physically abuse Lina just out of spite. I think they are normal siblings and Lina says even back during the Rezo arc that certain reactions she has is because of her sister. But, this is also the same sister who told her to go out and see the world - that's how Aqualord begins actually with Lina recounting that Luna told her to go see the world.

So, I think a lot of it from Luna is generally an act and Lina's own greatly magnified fears that she will let her sister down.
