Odd question about JF
I promise this is fandom related- just bear with me.

I enjoy fussing around with CSS and such on LJ. As I have gotten around to playing around on JF more I find myself wishing I could customizing my journal more. I've looked all around JF for some help in this but I've come up empty so far. I have a few questions as a result of my search-

1. Is it even possible for a free account to put up a background on the personal JF?

2. Is it possible for a free account to have layout like those made by users on LJ?

3. Are overrides from LJ usable on JF?

4. Is there any real benefit to having a paid account in terms of customizing?

I ask these questions because I would really like my JF to reflect my fandom interests more seeing as I use it almost solely for that.

Those are my questions. If they have obvious answers then my apologies. Thanks all.

1 & 3) Yep-- go to Modify Journal under Customize on the side bar (a link in case you aren't using the default style). There's a place to put in style overrides, which is where I add my background image.

I honestly don't know about the other questions-- perhaps someone else can help you there.

Yay! Thanks for the info. Now, this is going to sound weird but, eeh- I've been trying to use some code from LJ in there after reading your comment but it's not working so far. Thoughts on places to look for other codes to try?

What are you trying to do?

I was trying to get a background at first using CSS and then I realized that a lot of the coding on JF is a lot simpler than S2 CSS on LJ with the component style that I use there. >_> Yeah, I'm slow.

Any ways, I went and played around with my S1 overrides and those are almost working perfectly. I've kind of found a style I like for the moment so I decided to put up a header instead of a background. It looks okay except that my user info link is in a funky place. If I could figure a way to fix that I would ecstatic. I'd like it to be up with the other links. In addition, I'd like to get it to show up on my friends page as well.

Based on running a few tests:

1. Yes.

2. It appears to be possible for a free account to create a style by modifying an existing S1 style, then select that modified S1 style. I'm not certain how much modification to the existing style is possible to do with the free account, though, and if all S1 styles (or S2 styles and S2 themes) are usable with a free account.

3. In my experience, yes. But the extent to which you can override depends on the extent to which the variables exist in the CSS. Certainly, LASTN_HEAD overrides seem to work, at least for my paid account. You would have to test a specific override to see if it works.

I have an override in my paid permanent account, and I have a slightly modified version of the Punquin Elegant style which gives me the "Other Links" section in the sidebar.

I may have changed the entry width as well. I forget.

Yes, I modify my journal to do boring things.

4. Yes. From experimenting: a paid account can create a new style from scratch. A free account can only modify one of the existing styles. And it may be that not all existing styles are available for modification by a free account-- I didn't test that. You may be able to modify an existing style however you want, so I'm not sure how much of a restriction that is. You'd have to experiment to see how far you can get with a free account. (Some things *look* like you can do them with a free account, but, when you try, you get error messages. My paid permanent account does not get error messages when I try to modify things, at least not thus far, but I don't do a lot of modification, either.) There are enormous benefits to a paid account in terms of the number of icons, and in terms of flist size.

I have a basic paid permanent account, and there may be differences in what premium paid accounts can do?

First off, thanks for taking the time to type out all this information. It is very much appreciated. I'm going to need to take some time to try the different things you have addressed but in case I don't get back to you later on how it goes- thanks. ^_^

Interesting post - I've got a premium paid (permanent) account but have never tried doing anything with it. I don't suppose anyone 'in the know' would be willing to have a go at it to try and see what you can and can't do? (inasfar as telling me what to do and me doing it etc. *chuckles*)

That way [info]sisterelwood knows whether it's worth going that route or not? (and the rest of us too...)
