Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Current mood:Interested

Helloooooo, Fandom Lounge!
In the interests of helping myself further my New Year's resolution, I've decided to pimp this entry in my LiveJournal.

Copy/Paste'd here, for those of you too lazy to click.

So, one of my resolutions for 2007 is to broaden my horizons (the other? To stop swearing so much).

In an effort to do so, I am asking you -- Yes, YOU! the one reading this entry! -- to recommend the following to me.

1: A Book
2: An Author (preferably not the one that wrote the book, but I'll take that, too)
3: A Song
4: A Band (see above rule)
5: A Movie

For the record, I am already well versed in Pratchett and Gaiman. I am woefully ignorant with regard to music, though (Except for The Mountain Goats. I heart The Mountain Goats), so pretty much everything is fair game there.

Thanks!

ETA: You people rock hard. I can hear my wallet weeping, and I love every minute of it. Keep 'em coming!

1: The World is Flat, by Thomas Friedman. Best non-fiction book I've ever read, and I hear his Indian accent on the audio tape is to die for.
2: Chuck Palahnuik, author of Fight Club. His subject matter makes me sick to my stomach (pro or con, I'm not sure), but he has my favorite writing style ever.
3: Swords and Knives, by Tears for Fears
4: Keane
5: I don't waste my time on movies anymore, when you can get a TV show for twice the price with four times the content and an infinite amount of depth. Check out Oz on DVD, if you can, or Six Feet Under if you can't stomach prison drama, both are so good they make me feel fuzzy and nausiated at the same time.

1: Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
2: Alan Dean Foster (Especially the Commonwealth books--see here for a timeline of when they happen)
3: Goodnight Demonslayer. Go to Voltaire.net and it's on the mp3 downloads page. (It's flash, so I can't link directly.)
4: Well, okay, an individual guy, not a band, but Tom Smith, a filker. He's got a lot of his songs up for download on his site(free and otherwise). Lots of fun stuff! :D Also, The Flash Girls, if you haven't heard them. (Gaiman connection!)
5: Harvey. What's Up, Doc?</a>. The Sting. The Rocky and Bullwinkle movie, forget the exact name.

Based on Pratchett and Gaiman I could figure out where your literary tastes go, but I've not heard the Mountain Goats so I'm not sure what kind of music you'd be after. (And thus, I will be taking stabs in the dark.)

1. The Book of Flying by Keith Miller
2. Christopher Moore (You might like A Dirty Job and Lamb: the Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal)
3. Snakes on a Plane (Bring It) by Cobra Starship (totally outdated, I know, but it's really cool :P)
4. Bowling for Soup, maybe
5. Battle Royale (for morbid viewing, since you look like you loved The Hostel)

1: The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury.
2: Dorothy L Sayers--wrote high-falutin' mysteries back in the 1930s, and if you like mysteries at all you MUST read her books, particularly the Lord Peter Wimsey series.
3: Into My Arms - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4: Jeff Buckley--Lovely, lovely voice. Grace is one of my favorite albums ever.
5: The Court Jester (1956) - Danny Kaye at the absolute top of his game. Hilarious film.

2. Robin McKinley.
3. "Disappearing Man," by Tracey Grammer/Dave Carter (off the Drum Hat Buddha album, which is all around good).
4. Celldweller (indie, hard to find their albums unless you order right off their website, but if you're into industrial/metal at all, they're brilliant).
5. Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.

1. Braniac by Ken Jennings, the guy who won $2.5 million on Jeopardy. He's the king of trivia geeks.
2. Ellen Kushner, sort of Regent-era fantasy, with sword fighting and cross dressing and court intrigue and gay sex.
3. "The Road Goes on Forever" Robert Earl Keen
4. Jonathan Coulton- He posts a new song every week. "Skullcrusher Mountain" remains hilarious, and his cover of "Baby Got Back" is beautiful

1. Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay.
2. Connie Willis. I'd recommend To Say Nothing of the Dog if you want to laugh, and Passage if you want to cry.
3. We Used to Be Friends, by The Dandy Warhols. AKA the theme song to Veronica Mars.
4. O.K. Go. AKA the guys on the treadmills.
5. The Prestige. I'd say it's the best movie I saw all year.

1. The Princess Bride by William Goldman, if you haven't read it. It is profoundly loltastic.
2. Anything C.S. Lewis is worth reading; everyone knows Narnia, but Till We Have Faces is nothing shy of brilliant.
3. "Mad World", Tears for Fears
4. I've been hooked on Barenaked Ladies for ages.
5. The Court Jester -- I believe everyone should see this movie. It's just that damned funny.

3: "S.R.," by Reel Big Fish
4: Imogen Heap

1: The Picture of Dorian Gray, by Oscar Wilde. Queerest book ever.
2: Edith Wharton. Don't be scared off by Ethan Frome, which is dark and dull -- her society drama stuff, like The Age of Innocence and The House of Mirth, is witty and wonderful.
3: "Multitude of Casualties," The Hold Steady.
4: Moxy Fruvous, a now-defunct band from Toronto that is hilarious and harmonious.
5: In the Company of Men. An inspiration to the hyena within us all.

1. Out by Natsuo Kirino, a suspense murder thing.
2. Michael Ondaatje. He has a very fluid writing style. You will either adore him with all your soul, or slightly dislike him. I don't think anyone could hate him.
3. "Hand On Your Heart," a Kylie cover by Jose Gonzalez. Do not be scared.
4. either Teitur, which is in the John Mayer vein, or Snow Patrol, which is alternapop.
5. I second In The Mood For Love, or OOH! Oldboy for nightmares, and if you really can't take it (but even I could), you can watch it watered down as Zinda (in Hindi, with the sexy John Abraham). And for all time dark funny, Delicatessen.

3: "Carrot Juice is Murder" by Arrogant Worms. Absolutely hilarious.
4: Just one? I can't choose just one, so I'll give you two: Korpliklaani, a Finnish folk-metal group; and Faun, a German Renaissance/pagan/folk group

1. The Pedant and the Shuffly by John Bellairs. It's short and kind of hard to find, but it's fun and silly.

2. Will Cuppy. He wrote The Decline and Fall of Practically Everybody and How to Become Extinct and a few more. Some of it's a little dated, but still funny.

3. "I Hung My Head," Johnny Cash.

4. The Tiger Lillies at least for their album Shockheaded Peter. It's great.

5. Black Cat, White Cat. Young love, gangsters, wannabe gangsters, midgets, giants, death, resurrection, Casablanca, geese, ice and the weirdest way to remove a nail from a plank of wood.
