Advice for a first time MLP customizer?
My husband and I are considering customizing a My Little Pony (we're leaning towards Cherry Blossom or a purple unicorn that I don't know the name of) with a heartagram.

Any suggestions/advice on how to do it? Tips on what works best?

Or are we better off finding someone who's experienced to do it for us?

I have no idea but I do know a busy MLP forum that might be a resource. http://mlparena.com/index.php

Woosie had some tutorials on her site, the repainting eyes ones might be helpful for general painting help.

And after a bit of digging, maybe this site would help.

Are talking about just repainting it, or adding some sculpted parts to it? Because if you're talking about the former, you should be able to do everything you need to do with some thinned acrylic paints, very fine brushes, and some sealant. I don't think you should need to commission someone unless you're planning anything especially elaborate (plus, part of the fun is doing it yourself, IMO :3) but that's up to you.

Disclaimer: not a MLP person, but I have done some doll repainting, and I imagine there aren't many differences when it comes to the basics of both.

Well, the best thing would be to make a stencil of that heartagram, tape it over the butt area, and use whatever paint the MLP experts say is best for pony-painting. But this is just my recommendation as Sometimes Lazy Craftsperson.

I've never done MLP's but as a graduate of the Breyer model horse fandom, I'm all in favor of do-it-yourself if you are a do it yourself type of person, and have been happy with your own work.
If you haven't done paint/crafty type things,and this is a one shot, then you might want to just hire somebody because;

1. Good paint is expensive, you will only use a tiny bit of it on one pony, and crappy paint gives crappy looking results.

2. Paintbrushes, stenciling materials, etc. See above and double it. Good paintbrishes cost a *fortune* and can make all the differences in a good looking repaint. Stray bristles and gobby paint just look tacky.

But hey, if this is for the fun of it, Have fun!
