Silentautumnrain.... she was involved in a huge wank a while back, right? About art and stuff? Faking art? Cause she's back at it on deviantart and this time Jareth (yes, THAT Jareth) and the Dread Pirate Westley are her victims.

Remember Crystal Wank? Yeah, that's silentautumnrain. Or, at least someone using her handle and email address.

(And, because unsubstantiated rumours are idiotic: Her picture on Silent Autumnrain's PhotoBucket account here. That could be a coincidence, so here's her profile on DPChallenge (Google-catched) This could of course just be a fangirl using her name as email-handle and likes Crystal's picture.)

Saw a photobucket/silentautumnrain/[random pic.jpg] address.

Clicked it.

Clicked the main PhotoBucket account.

Saw picture of Crystal.

Backbutton to Google.

Clicked her Silentautumnrain DiviantArt account.

Saw PhotoShop pictures and a link to a new DiviantArt journal, where she calls herself 'Crystal'.

Backbutton to Google.

Clicked links at random that didn't say DiviantArt

Found email address.

deviantART is chock full of this kind of stuff.

I see it all the damn time in the tiny realm of vector fanart-- a good majority of it is vectorized screenshots/official artwork. Pisses me off to no end >_<

I had a photomanip deleted by DA without so much a warning on the grounds that it violated copyright or some shit. I was a bit miffed in the grounds that it was a PARODY but whatEVAR.

There are digital painters that are that good - they're rare, but it happens.* On the other hand, judging from her "sketch" bits at the edge of the "WIP," and also from the way she's doing one eye and working outward, I would be inclined to say that, especially with past history, she is a fake. And that is my VERY scientific opinion. *grins*

Really, I'm not an expert, but that's my take.

*I'd check out Kyena's work, it's amazing.

I dunno . . . I mean, it's Crystal . . . but some of them do seem to be genuine digital paintings/airbrushings rather than just photos put through filters. On the other hand, some of them look like she went through with the blur tool (albeit highly proficiently) and called them airbrushings.

I have a sort of technical question, though. It seems like people are largely upset because she's calling the pictures "digital paintings," but is this because people think they're 'Shop-filtered photos, or because if they are real, they're in the wrong category? I can't figure out Devart's categories any more, but it seems like they're in the right category (if they are real).

They're not. As a digital artist I can tell you they're absolutely not. Not only has she never given any evidence of actual WIP (Elijah's airbrushed and transperancy-masked eye does NOT count) but they overlay exactly. Even the best artists can't do this. If she's going over pictures she NEEDS to put them in 'photo manipulation'. Otherwise she's lying and duping people.

I always thought photomanipulation was for photos that had textures and backgrounds and things added into them, or where photos were added into existing scenes, or multiple photos were combined, and that airbrushing was like . . . retouching a photo. I'm not a serious artist; I just sort of dabble in CG and digital painting. My process with these things is usually: take a vector outline from a photo, copy it to a blank canvas, and then fill in with colour based on the photo.

Would that be airbrushing, or digital painting? Or photomanipulation? I don't want to impose, but would you mind explaining the difference to me? For one, I wouldn't want to have my work miscategorised, and for two, I like to know these things. (:

That's digital painting with a touch of rotoscoping. But you're starting with blank, right? You're just drawing the outline from something else? Traditional artists did that stuff all the time.

Photomanipulation is changing the way a photo looks, or making a photo from other photos. It's generally realistic and highly polished. All art definitions are fuzzy at the edges though, this is something that many debates spring from.

But your definition is right, 'airbrushing' is basically digital manipulation. It's just a more precise term. :)

Yah, I start with a blank. Oddly enough, I always found it too confusing if I tried to colour over the original photo, because I would forget which bits I had coloured and end up with gaps . . .

I guess the Devart categories just confuse me. Because it seems like airbrushing should really go in the photomanipulation category and not the digital painting category—except that I know it's possible to create completely original art using an airbrush—but that would seem to be actual, physical painting and not digital painting . . . but obviously what silentautumnrain is doing is not actual, physical airbrushing. I see what you mean, though, she should definitely be listing her pictures as photomanipulation, not digital paintings, but I can also see how someone could be legitimately confused (I'm not quite willing to give Crystal the benefit of that much doubt, though).
