F_W as fandom's collective memory
Interesting discussion here about how F_W is the fandom's (or at least the LJ portion of it) collective memory.

Since when are we calling ourselves the mean girls at the back of the classroom? I mean, everybody knows the back of the room is where the slackers, the stoners, and the smartasses sit. And that is what we totally are, yo.

We're the kids who sit in the back of math class playing Texas hold 'em and convince the teacher it's a valid exercise in statistical probabilities.

...why, no, I never did that, what gave you that idea?

I always sat in the very front. That way I could see the board and I wouldn't miss anything. I every teacher's dream student... except when I kept asking questions.

I remember in sophomore 6th period English, I sat right in front of the lectern and had many a good nap. :) I always got good grades on my work, so I never got yelled at.

I preferred sitting in the middle. I never liked sitting in the spotlight or in the back. Too many people expected me to have all the answers or to be responsible for the ones who never had a clue.

I was going to make some sort of analogy between FW and the Daily Show and Colbert Report, but then I saw that someone already did in those comments. Then, I was going to make a comment about fools and such, but I kept reading the same damn comment.

So...we are fandom_wank. Your wank will be mocked and added to the wiki. Deletion is futile.

I'm just here to mock. I only remember anything because it annoys people who would prefer it forgotten and I get fed cookies by other FW members as a reward for my gleeful grudewanking.

Honestly, that big fandom freakout being on FW bothered me, and this idea that we are some sort of Fandom Newsletter is hilariously unsettling. I mean, there's no question we have no journalistic ethic and hardly even try, right? Right? And that not every wanky thing even gets on FW? But they're not kidding with the linkage. We're bad mofos with links and screencaps and commemorative icons. Oh, FW. I am swelling with pride.

It mostly bothered me because people failed so hard at mockery.

I do use the FW wiki as my own personal external memory bank, though.

Moral authority or gardening

I like that idea very much. I have always said that the mocking keeps people in check, and it was noted on that thread that people learn how not to be wankers by reading F_W. I agree with that. There is a certain pruning of the wank, the pointing and the mocking almost evolves fandom. F_W is the pruning of the fandom tree, exposing the both the diseased and the deadwood and then trims it away.

I skimmed a lot of that. I guess it's kind of cool that people regardless of fandom come together to point & laugh - otherwise some people might not generally talk to folks outside their own fandom(s). And it's kind of neat newbies can learn how not to be an asshat by reading f_w.

I think people would remember asshats and freak-outs and weirdness regardless of whether something like f_w/f_w wiki exists, though. I know that in fandoms/communities where wank does not get reported, we're constantly aware of that past and occasionally discuss it and whatnot.
