So, better late than never, right?
Long ago, I mentioned "The Swing Years and Beyond" in one of those rambling off-topic threads at OTF wank, and mentioned that it was streamed live at kuow.org. The person I was talking to was on the other half of the planet, and didn't think she'd be able to catch it at 7pm-Midnight Pacific Time on Saturdays.

Well.

The show now streams 24/7. For anyone with a taste for big band music, it's what I like to think of as a cheap fix: five hours a week of everything from early jazz to space lounge. The current host has a strong preferrence for Louis Prima, often stuff I havn't heard since childhood.

So, anyway: Music! For Free! Different than what you can make at home!

(Side note to our Canadian readers: does anyone really listen to The Vinyl Cafe? the hour it's on is the only hour we turn the radio off, at my house).

Yuck, The Vinyl Café? The only two radio stations I listen to are CBC and CHRW (UWO's radio station), and it's certainly not because of Stuart McLean.

KUOW plays it on Sunday afternoon, between Studio 360 and Sunday All Things Considered, and it's an amazing stimulus to go out and work in the yard.

Stuart McLean, who makes Garrison Keillor sound like Wolfman Jack...

If you listen to the CBC in Canada, you are expected to belong to one of two groups; either you rabidly love Stuart McLean, especially "The Turkey Story", or you hate him with fire. I fall into the latter category, but believe me, plenty of people love the crap out of him.

This disturbs me. I mildly loathe him, but this is almost certainly because the second time his show came on, I turned the kitchen radio off.

I never turn the radio off, down, maybe, because people are watching TV; over to the Mariners game, yes, but not off.

The guy makes Mr. Rogers sound like Freddie Blassy.

I'm not in Canada, but Chicago Public Radio plays The Vinyl Cafe at midnight on Saturdays. I only caught it once, but it introduced me to an excellent song about bananas.

Okay, I'm only using this as an excuse to tell everyone to go download Banana. (Scroll down, natch.) It's free and legit AND IT IS ABOUT BANANAS. What more could you ask?
