David Campbell writes a rather interesting article entitled Fandamentalism regarding the one trait all fandoms have in common - its crazies. It mainly references Transformers fandom, as his commentary on the upcoming movie is what sparked the issue, but he covers several others on a general basis.

And, yes, for the sake and beauty of irony, a flame war does break out in the comments about whether or not Transformers is the greatest. show. evaaaaaaaaaah.

Not that the article isn't interesting and entertaining, but I just wanted to use this again.

That was a surprisingly fast jump to Godwin's in the comments, given the subject matter....

Transformers? Greatest show ever?

AHAHAHAHAHA!

Although this may be the best thing ever.

Haha, I love that guy. He's got some great parodies on there. The Rude Awakening of Optimus Prime is one of my favorites.

While he has some good points, he's rather being an asshat about it. A person can know how ridiculous their show is and still be a bit defensive when someone calls them morons for liking it.

Case in point, I recall one episode where Optimus was defeated by the Decepticons, so they dismantel him, and turn his corpse into a big robot alligator, which the Autobots have to defeat without damaging too much. Of course, their main problem is that the Decepticons have raised their huge tower base to the surface, and have attached the ultimate weapon to it.... Optimus's arm and gun!
That's right, his flaccid, dead arm is strapped to the top of a tower and is their main weapon. That's like sawing off my arm, putting a Luger in my palm, and nailing it to the top of my apartment complex as a defense system.
Anyway, Autobots ride up the walls and get it back, or something. Optimus is fine.

Ah, City of Steel. What a serious and well-thought-out episode.

'Zactly. No one is a fan of an 80s cartoon because of its narrative brilliance and emotional depth. We like giant robots or magic princesses with swords.

I'd also like to mention that that episode happens in New York, after the Decepticons have taken over and turned the taxis into Decepticon attack drones.

I happen to like incredibly stupid plots played perfectly straight. The self-awareness in more recent cartoons just isn't the same.

Same here. *holds up Chicken Run as an example*

And also the animefication of the Fantastic Four. Man what?

My friend put forth the idea of Destro/Baroness/Cobra Commander. And let us just say the triangle swung both ways.

Methinks somebody missed the whole "Robots aren't organic life and therefore can possibly have their arms wired to things after they're cut off."

Either that or David Campbell is a giant robot with a really crappy non-compatible with anything else OS.

Other than that, I more or less agree with nearly everything he said. Though I don't know how much I like the whole "Fans don't react with violence, they react with communication" thing since most of the time the more zealous fans don't communicate so much as they stomp their feet and scream their opinions and try to drown out anyone who dares disagree with them.
