A guide to backing up your LJ off-site
Considering Barak's most recent fabulously opaque comments on LJ's policy towards journal deletion/suspending, I thought people might be interested in a guide I put together for backing up your lj to your local computer, and offsite. It's been pretty heavily tested and hopefully it's now perfectly clear.

I have two links here from one of your fearless testers on IJ, if that's okay:

I'm looking forward to taking the plunge this weekend. (That $30 perm account makes me happier than I should be. ;)

Yeah, I've been following liz_marcs' experience. I already linked one of those posts from my tutorial.

Er. Liz_marcs isn't precisely a "tester" except in that I sort of pushed my beta version public earlier than perhaps I should have. Um.

I'd say anyone who has taken your post as literal advice to backing up their LJ to IJ is a tester. And, whaddaknow, IT WORKED. YAY!

It also worked like gangbusters for [info]ranalore. Fab-u-lous, non?

\o/ Man. There's some ljs out there I would cry if they were lost; the sheer amount of fanwork hosted on lj is staggering.

I don't think they would lose their *LJ'* entries from this experiment, would they?

It just would come copies over to their other journal of choice all wonky, right?

Because, eh ...

Well, no, it's the deletion/suspension that I'm worried about. Copying should preserve at least all the text.

... "copied over", excuse me

Ah, thank you. I was looking for something like this since Strikethrough '07! Now my journal is backed up to GJ/JF/IJ/LJ.

Well now... Method #2 (Fearless) worked like a charm for me!

Thanks. I had a bit of a hiccup when backing up my journal from LJ to here, but it doesn't seem to have caused any major problems. No comments or moods though, but I used LJ-sec, so that's to be expected.
